  1. These things rock! on 4Gb CF Card Announced · · Score: 2, Informative

I am currently using one of the Lexar 2GB cards for a Hard Drive on an embedded box that I put together. It's faster than IDE flash drives and costs MUCH less. A 512mb IDE flash drive costs about the same as a 2GB Compact Flash card. I have also tried using the 2GB Compact Flash cards by Pretc. I do not recommend using these cards for a drive. They proved to be extremely slow and some applications would not function with them. Lexar has really come out with a nice poroduct here!

Sandisk is working on a 4GB card as well, but it is not yet released.

  2. Yahoo! on AOL Bridges AIM and ICQ · · Score: 1

I stopped using ICQ when AOL bought them. I think the best IM out right now is by far Yahoo Instant Messenger... It has support for video, built in games, chat themes (Not skins) and much more... plus it doesn't have all of the security vulnerabilities that ICQ has.

What I would like to see though is for all the instant messengers to use some common network... It should be secure and Easy to use. The clients should be Skinnable... and Open Source so that anyone can develop new features and capabilities. Why can't someone come up with a way for them to all talk to each other (Not just two)?

  3. Death by XBOX on A Shocking Controller For The Xbox · · Score: 1

The way you DIE from electricity is by running voltage across your chest... there is no better way to do this than from one hand to the other. That is why electricians keep one hand in their pocket while working around live electricity... they don't want to DIE. Game controllers by design require BOTH hands to use. It doesn't take a genius to figure out where the electricity has to go to complete the circuit...
If you are only talking about recieveing a shock on one hand only, there really is no harm done (No path across chest), but this thing is just lethal! If this guy kills himself from using that controller, he should certainly get a Darwin award!

  4. Re:Do chicks dig it? on ReplayTV DVR to Remove Features · · Score: 1

    1. The honking big loud-ass PC case is actually a mini-atx with a silent power supply.
    2. The mediocre Video output comes from my S-VIDEO jack which allows me 800x600 res on a TV (NTSC is 320X240)
    3. I don't need a wireless keyboard and mouse... I have an IRMAN (www.evation.com) running girder remote control software.
    4. I HATE anime and there are no bootlegs on my PVR... and 200GB is more than enough storage... plus the PVR makes a great MP3 Jukebox!
    5. I am married and yes, she digs it.

  5. TIVO Software on ReplayTV DVR to Remove Features · · Score: 3, Informative

Why would you want to pay for a monthly subscription to TIVO anyway when there a many FREE services that only require you to make a one time purchase... or no purchase at all...

    Windows Based
    Snapstream PVR
    ShowShifter

    Linux Based
    Myth TV
    Linux PVR Depot"

I have built my own PVR from scratch and the cost was comparable with a TIVO. Those packages offer many of the same features found in TIVO and ReplayTV... Plus, you can integrate them very easily into a home automation system or home network.

  6. Re:Transmissions Only! on Research: Mobile Phones Disrupt Aircraft · · Score: 1

Maybe what need to be done is to just have a way to shut off the transmitter on the phones so they can't transmit. Maybe some built-in technology that would automatically shut off the transmitter while inside a plane? Pilot acitvated? Of course, having a technology like that would open up a new meaning to Denial Of Service attacks if someone could hack the signal to shut off the transmitter.

    hrmm.....

    this needs more thought.....

  7. Transmissions Only! on Research: Mobile Phones Disrupt Aircraft · · Score: 1

Mobile phones only effect navigation equipment when they are TRANSMITTING. Having a mobile phone turned on does not cause any harm to electronic navigation systems unless you are actually talking on the phone. Computers, PDA's, and other electronic devices do NOT affect navigation equipment. The only electronic devices that can cause interference with other electronic equipment are the ones that propograte RF (Radio Frequency)... You know... WiFi, Bluetooth, Cell Phones, Radio Tansmitters, etc...
Knowing this, I don't see the need to limit the use of electronic equipment that does not propogate RF. I also don't see why cell phones can't be turned on as long as you are not talking on them. Many phones are becoming more and more technologically advanced such that you could be using you phone for other things besides talking with your friends. Personally, I think that you should be able to use your cell phone for anything you want (Games, calculator, whatever...)as log as your phone doesn't transmit anything.

    Just my 2 cents...

  8. The RIAA is OUT OF CONTROL! on RIAA Grabs Student's Life's Savings · · Score: 1

I can't believe that the RIAA has the audacity to take this guy's money. If they can't make money on record sales, I guess they'll make it at the expense of search engine writers. I suppose it's the only way they can pay for all the lawsuits they've had a hand in recently. We need to have an Anti-RIAA/Anti-MPAA Association to fight these guys. These guys are WAY out of control! - Slew -
