  1. Re:PVR with digital cable on Linux PVRs Highlighted · · Score: 4, Informative

No that's not true. Any tv capture card can support digital cable, as long as its outputs are compatible with the tuner's inputs. The only issue I've seen in relation to a cable box is that you need to have a way to control the IR signal (usually via an IR Imitter) with one remote control. Every digital cable box that I've ever come across has had at least a coax out, if not RCA outs, which should be able to plug directly into most tuner cards. Beyond that, there should be no compatibility issues.

  2. Article is not broad enough on Linux PVRs Highlighted · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is just not broad enough for people to actually see the differences between the various htpc alternatives. Many of us htpc fans started over a year ago here or here or here . This review, frankly, is inadequate. There are far more issues than meets the eye when making your own htpc, whether myth or xp mce. I'm not advocating either one, I'd just like to remark, after building my own htpc from scratch, that this article tells little to nothing about the pain and suffering of completing this complex task on your own.

  3. Why not Linux? on Linux for Dummies, 5th Edition · · Score: 1

Here's the bottom line: (whatever-flavor) Linux is too hard to (fully) install. Red Hat/Fedora tries to do too much while Arch does too little (yes, I understand that's the point of Arch, but it has the capability to auto-recognize my ethernet card, yet it doesn't include that capability at install time. Yay for me!). Who is going to give up their valuable productivity in fixing (whatever-flavor) Linux? Testers and ambitious developers will, but if you expect a widespread adoption by the masses it needs to be a painless installation process ... and by that I mean a comprehensive and complete installation to where I can actually use ALL components of my computer when it completes; like a Windows installation. Haven't seen one yet. I like Unix - I used Solaris and IBM AIX althroughout school and was able to learn it very quickly. Linux, when installed, is extremely similar and easy to use. However, when it comes down to installing Linux, there's a ridiculous mess of crap to figure out, which varies from flavor to flavor of Linux. If you personally want (whatever-flavor) Linux to succeed, make it work - out of the box. While I'm an active developer in the OSS community, I'm not fixing Linux at the sacrifice of my productivity. Unlike other open source programs/tools, the operating system can either inhibit or encourage your ability to do work in general. Frankly, I don't care what OS I'm using. I need to get work done.

What if the human life span was already 5000 years? What would it matter? While I realize it's a shock to people (now) that they could suddenly live 500+ times more than they expected, in the long run, would it matter? While the expected human lifespan has increased 4 fold in the last 300 years, we're somehow still okay. What is the harm in research? Even if they meet only 1/7 of their objective by effectively treating cancer, isn't that enough to fully support this endeavor? For the people that disdain increased lifespan, what perspective do you have on current healthcare? Should someone die because of a cold? I don't understand where you can make the distinction between making the human body more resiliant (via medicine) and making the human body more resiliant (through gene therapy).

When I was taking classes from professors whose only reason for teaching was the fact that they couldn't work in groups, this would've been extremely useful. I read through the author's planned censorship and I completely disagree. If there were ever a valid complaint to make public it would be of the ass clowns that pass themselves off as knowledgable experts in universities around the country but have nothing to back it up. And they're supposed to be the teachers? ...

What is everyone's problem with accountability these days? The lack of accountability is everywhere, especially the places where it counts, like our schools and our government. My New Year's Resolution: Make everyone who should be responsible for something accountable for it, and I encourage you to do the same.

We need accountability, we lost it somehow in the midst of our "political correctness." Look guys, it's okay to tick people off. Do what's right, stand up for yourselves! Read "Profiles in Courage" by John F. Kennedy. That book is about real men in American history. Back in those times, politicians were Statesmen, not sellouts.

I don't write to /. often, but this one really gets to me because it's dealing with our young adults who deserve to be informed. It also deals with certain professors who deserve to be canned.
