Does anybody really read gaming magazines anymore? The internet is the best place to get up to date gaming news, not some rag that is 4-6 weeks out of date when it hits the newstands or is mailed to your home.
I've seen the entire politics section here on/. get more and more cluttered with troll stories, but this one takes the cake. How in the world can the editors actually allow this trip to get posted?
It just took approximately 6 page reloads to get this story along with comments to finally render correctly in Firefox.
Now that's a scary game to play! Especially if you are a subscriber........
Optimization models

Java 1.5 vs C#
·
· Score: 2, Informative
Java has a few advantages over C# in optimization. It's very easy to analyze Java programs to be certain that certain memory locations absolutely will not be modified. That's much harder in languages with native pointers. Those invariants allow you to compile out certain calculations that would have to be done at runtime in a C# program. You can even start spreading loop cycles over multiple CPUs, but I'm pretty certain that the present JVMs aren't that smart.
I've tried listening to Diane Rhem on NPR, but to tell the truth her voice and the way she talks is a BIG distraction for me. I just end up turning the dial........
I noticed in the linked PDF file that his test CPU is an Athlon XP1700+ overclocked to 2.15GHz. A stock XP1700+ only runs at 1.4GHz, so that is a pretty hefty overclock. Seems to me it could be the overclock that is causing his 20% speed increase, not some special optimizations.
In the wake of stories like this is this a message that we need more secure forms of encryption than we already have? RSA is great so far, but how long until 1024 is broken? Or any other schemes, like the MD5 hashing that's used for digital signatures?
Keeping ahead of the crackers is a big concern not only for security of transactions, but for personal privacy as well.
Has a good LOTR Comic Book or graphic novel ever been released?
I remember reading the SW:ANH comic book adapation that Marvel put out back in 70's and it was very good.

P2P Leaks Surprises
·
· Score: 1
P2P was a neat concept way back when it was called a bulletin board. I guess it still is a neat concept, now that we have IM for sharing snapshots and web-camera streams. The truth, however, is that it isn't nearly as effective in pushing around bits as administering a cheap Linux box with 200GB of HD off a cable modem with a bunch of college frat buddies.
Moreover, it isn't nearly as good as having a private server with 500+GB of storage on a college LAN... I lost count after the 5th HD was added to my frat's file server. Dues in a frat house go to the 60"HDTV, game systems, parties (It's all about the Super Bowl), and the file server "as needed". As long as you meter/throttle the bandwidth so that the file sharing outbound network doesn't spike the University's network admin's attention (or better yet, have a student network admin in your frat), bandwidth consumption looks just like a massive Quake (or other FPS) game. Match that to the right port for Quake, etc, and even the best sysadmins are fooled.
Will this give Garage Band some competition in the 'home music making/mixing' software department?
What does Linux give Iraq that other OS's do not?

Linux in Iraq
·
· Score: 3, Insightful
What features does Linux offer Iraq that Windows does not? Does it offer any special advantages besides the standard ones for open source? For example, are there better translations or special software used by people in Iraq?
You must be crazy to think that not using the inofrmation doesn't "make us secure". Do you even know how much crap is confiscated from passengers during searches? My friend works for the TSA and they've confiscated, among other things, switch blades/knives, drugs (LOTS of it, and not just pot either), guns, etc... And almost all of the time these items are taken from white/american citizens.
Now imagine what would happen if that gun wasn't confiscated, got on the plane, and some nutcase decided to start firing at people for whatever reason.
Being "secure" means being certain that there are no holes in the screening process, even if it inconveniences you.
The growth may be attributed to the ease of installing Linux from a CD-ROM based install script. I certainly have found it the easiest and fastest way to install a linux distro - and now with apt-get, installing applications onto Linux has been made easier as well.
No, not that BSA. The Boy Scouts of America.

This holiday season seems to have an abundance of good games being released: HL2, WOW, Metroid 2, Pirates!, KOTOR2, etc.
IMO that's the reason for the increased sales.......
Linux: Quality is job #1
How about we just ship the nuclear waste to the moon, ala Space:1999?

Can Slash be included in this? Surely there are 500 great lines in it SOMEWHERE.........

I can't stand either of them. Give me John McLaughlin and his McLaughlin Group over those other clowns anyday.

Would you have sex with an intern in the oval office ?

Can someone explain who regulates who gets to control what domains? Can ICANN revoke Verisign's control of the .net and .com domains? If not, who can?

I think it is. I used to see stories by Mr.? Bray in the Detroit Free Press a number of years ago.

New title of series: Start Trek: ?
Desert Combat has a U.S. versus Middle East theme.
