  1. It occurs to me on Top 50 Science Fiction TV Shows · · Score: 1

That they simply asked an intern to draw up a list of every scifi show s/he could think of, then they went down the list, grabbing ones they'd heard were cool and throwing in the ones they were sure they'd get yelled at for not including (Dr. Who, Firefly, Star Trek, Buffy, and Xena may have made it on that way -- not saying they are or aren't good, but that they'd have the "yelling" factor.)

I mean, it doesn't look like any devoted scifi fans were asked, and it seems clear that some stuff was thrown on there just because they couldn't think of something better. I mean, to include The Bionic Woman and The Six Million Dollar Man, to include Buffy but not Angel, to include Firefly but not Farscape, to include The Greatest American Hero but not Mork and Mindy, to forget The Prisoner, Space Above and Beyond AND Earth 2 but remember Atlantis and Voyager? Heck, to put in Voyager, TNG, and the original Star Trek but not DS9 -- that shows nothing more than sloppiness. I blame Arts/Entertainment editors who just wanted something that'd get Slashdotted.

(also, it looks like some of their comments were written by "someone who cares a lot about this show" and others were written by "the guy who's in charge of writing 45 words about every TV show ever written")

  2. Re:I don't know about you... on U.S. Broadband Access Falling Behind · · Score: 1

The USA was "designed" by people who figured that anyone who didn't walk the distance from where he slept to where he did his daily labor was pretty rich. The town I live in is 18 miles from the nearest major city, and was founded in the early 19th century; going into Columbus was a major event (lasting at least two days, because it was too far to really want to go back right away) for most people living here at the time. How hard do you think it is to get 20,000 feet from the nearest Central Office in the US? How hard do you think it is to get that far away in Austria, the Netherlands, or South Korea? Yeah, exactly. The technology is getting better: ADSL2 supports slightly longer loop lengths, you don't get the same line noise problems with FiOS, etc. If broadband were already perfect and freely available, no one would be bothering to make new and better ways of connecting. Calm down, enjoy your already insanely fast connections (does anyone else remember 2400 baud?) and remember that in thirty years, your grandchildren are going to think this issue is at least as silly as you'd think an intense debate over why Ford only offerred cars in black in the early 20th century.

He's right. The thing didn't look so great after all that, but it survived beyond any reasonable expectation. The video even looked good.

  4. I haven't seen anyone else from the other SW lines on One Last Campout for Star Wars Fans · · Score: 1
    So here goes.

I'm doing this too, only in Los Angeles. We're camping out for 6 weeks, raising money for charity while doing so, and we plan to have a great time. Feel free to make fun of us if you'd like, but we're going to be having fun and doing good things for sick kids, and we don't really mind that you think we're silly.

For those who are genuinely interested: the six weeks I spent (off and on) on the streets of LA in 2002 were definitely worth it -- and were superior to the three hours or so I spent in the theatre for Ep. II, to say nothing of the time I spent watching Ep. I. I made a bunch of friends, and now have about thirty-five "war stories" to tell my kids someday. It's a lot like working at Disneyland, except you don't have to slave yourself out to a mouse to participate. Also, unlike working at Disneyland, I want to do it again.

For those who are repulsed or baffled: you don't have to like it for us to enjoy ourselves. And you don't have to help, because we're already increasing our charitable donation: the last two LA lines together gathered $72,000 for the Starlight Children's Foundation, and we're already getting more for this event. We'd love to have you join us, but your approval or participation is in no way required.

(full disclosure: I am on the Media Team for the LiningUp.Net group... moreover, I was 11th in line in 2002, and I was employed part-time [by choice] throughout the event)

  5. Disneyland Will Lose Key Source of Employees!!! on Why Johnny Can't Handwrite · · Score: 1

You all fail to grasp the true significance of all of this. Don't you see that now, with the demise of cursive skills amongst the general population, Disneyland will be unable to hire new people who can write on hats (it has to be in cursive, you see, because the sewing machine doesn't render printed letters well at all, because you're writing in one continuous line)!!! That means that those few of us who work in this incredibly important industry will become... even more valuable... maybe even paid more... certainly get more hours scheduled... we'll become one of those idolized cast member subgroups, like the folks who work at the Haunted Mansion... Cursive is dead! Long live Times New Roman!!!!
