I have two questions regarding this:
1- The RIAA is filing "John Doe" lawsuits (they will add the names later after the discovery process or warrants are served or whatever). At this time, they are trying to use the ip addresses to establish the identity of the people they are suing. How come the ip addresses are not posted in the news stories or on the eff page if it is public information and is in the lawsuit?
2- Exactly how is the RIAA obtaining their information? Are they seeding songs with data in the tag so they can then say in court that this song was slightly modified and now has a unique filesize or date in the tag and we alone have put this song out there and let people download it?
And if so, can they legally do that? They are not a law enforcement agency, can they say that the laws regarding copyright don't apply to us since we own the copyright?
OK, more than 2 questions:
3- Exactly what applications are the people using when they download this stuff? Kaaza? If it is Kaaza, are they then looking int he default shared Kaaza folder for the song they have seeded?
I have found NO websites that have this info.
Any thoughts?
I wonder (and I am not slamming macs here since I own one) if Microsoft released a new version of Windows yearly like Apple does (for a fee most times) if it would address issues such as this one.
The again, if MS released Windows XP 2004 and charged $129, would most people install it?
Wheile there were layoffs after 9/11 (travel industry, etc), there were also a lot of companies that used 9/11 as an excuse to layoff, thereby avoiding bad press.
Not if I don't sign up for unemployment. I don't qualify anyway as I quit my job and decided to take some time off.
Unemployment figures are a crock anyway since there are quite a few more people out of work than are registered at their local "Employment Development Office", well, that's what they call it in CA.
The homeless are the only group that's not being tracked at the moment.
All the rest of you are already being tracked by your:
credit card
membership card (wall mart, sams, grocery store, etc.)
utility bills
What if I pay cash and am unemployed?
I did 5 years of inhouse tech support and didn't see the level of abuse as detailed in the article but I have seen all these methods used at least once.

In Soviet Russia, modded Lite-On drives burn you!
A trial version sounds cool. I wonder if it would be misused by griefers though...
Can they call this a cd then? Does it conform to red book standards?

Hard to surf on a laptop in bright sun, wonder if they will also rent you an umbrella? Also wonder if security will let a laptop in.

Ever notice how Apple doesn't put a toll-free number to call at the end of their commercials? Wouldn't wanna increase market share any, now would we?
