I think it may depend on where you live. When I lived in NYC, it was more than enough for me to be able to demonstrate to them that I was able to do the work at the level that they expected or greater. However, where I live now, it is 100% about certifications and college degrees. Though I have worked at some large companies and been put in charge of multi-million dollar IT budgets through demonstrated experience, where I am at now I can't even get looked at without a Bachellors degree at a minimum and a portfolio of certifications.
It is absolutely disgusting to say the least that in some areas qualified people are turned down for jobs because they lack a piece of paper
Depending on their reading habits that should last them at least a 20 days, and hopefully more like a few monts. I read the Mission: Earth Series in a week when I read it because it was that good IMO.
You might also consider som Isaac Asimov such as I, Robot and/or Foundation
Just my $.02...Hope it helps, because I am now being forced by slashdot to add more characters to this post because apparently creating a good list with appropriate links is a bad idea here.
Just ignore the rest below here:

The only effective way that I have found to keep a Windows box running even halfway decently is install Windows (we'll assume XP for right now), immediately perform all Windows Updates, both Critical and optional and any driver updates, then install:
Some Anti-Virus Program that you like (at my work, we install Norton even though it is a resource hog, but never Norton Internet Security since it eventually always fucks a computer up)
Set your Anti-virus program to scan at least weekly, and automatically update itself, Update and sca with Ad-Aware and Spybot weekly at a minimum, and update and protect with SpywareBlaster weekly at a minimum.
It is absolutely ridiculous that a person should have to do this to keep their computer running decently. We get so many Windows machines in the shop that it isn't even funny, but thusfar, whenever we have managed to convince someone to upgrade to a MacOS X machine (Typically when their Dell, Compaq, HP, E-Machines has a motherboard failure). They have came back completely excited and astonished that they don't really have to worry about spyware and viruses so much.
My reccomendation on keeping your WIndows XP machine in top performance. Go buy a high-end Mac and run VirtualPC if it can run whatever program you NEED to run (Note: Games do not count), if you cannot run your Prorgram under VPC, buy a low-end PC and keep it off the network.
Hmmm...well there is no Where the hell is it going on. It is in the binder of course. Very fast and easy to find as long as you are diligent in putting them back:)
I have thousands of CD's that I have collected over the years. Recently I figured out just how much space they took up, it was frightening. I made backups of probably 90% of my Music CD's on my computer and even then realized that I do not even listen to 90% of that stuff any more. I want it around for nostalgic value or if I need a song for the club, but I finally took all the originals to a local music shop and sold them.
When it comes to data CD's with drivers, etc. I just am not able to convince myself to get rid of them, so I went to and downloaded DiskTracker. It is MacOS X only, but it is an awesome application. There is probably something similar for Windows (Check Versiontracker).
After installing Disktracker I made sure that it serializes each CD with a simple number 1,2,3,etc. and bought some CD Binders (Fellowes seem to be sturdy enough). Now I am in the process of:
Insert CD
Let Disktracker catalog it
Eject CD
Write Serial Number on it with Sharpie Marker
Insert into Binder
When Binder is full write on outside something like 0001-0128
Repeat ad naseum:)
The System seems to work pretty good. Now when I need any particular file, I just open up disktracker, search for it using the built-in search function and then find out what CD number it is on. I open the proper binder, take out the CD and use it, then return it to its proper place.
I have probably another 750-1000 CD's to go, but they now take up significantly less space and that in itself is worth the time I spend cataloging them.
OGG:
Reading through the comments I see some mention of OGG format for iTunes and iPod. My take on this is that while OGG is a fine format to use, the large majority of consumers just don't, so it would not be something that, considering development costs would be financially responsible for Aplpe to implement at this time. Just as it would be simple enough for many video game makers to release Mac versions of their software, the development costs to write and then market to a market segment that is basically very small is not financially responsible, even though those that use the Mac platform would like to play the same games as their Windows using friends.
iPod, iStereo and other stuff:
I don't know, nor do I particularly care why Apple is made an iPod division:), however I liked the idea presented for an indash iDevice that an iPod could just plug into. I think it would behoove Apple to partner with/make deals with some of the larger and popular car stereo mfr's to make this a reality. I would love to see a deck for my car that I could slide an iPod into, as long as I could also use regular CD's seeing as how I don't presently have an iPod, but that would in some twisted way justify my purchasing one:)..or alternately, i could buy an iPod and if the car deck existed, I could then make a justification to purchase that...heh heh heh
Other crap you may or may not be interested in:
One of the things that I am extremely sick of reading here on slashdot is the constant Mac and Windows bashing comments. Sometimes they are humorous, but more often than not they are just annoying.
Presently my work consists of repairing customers Windows machines on a daily basis (hardware and software), repairing customers Macs occasionally, assisting our System Administrator in the administration of our Linux (RH and Slackware), netBSD, and FreeBSD servers, and a myriad of any other things that may present themselves as needing to be done at my job. I am seriously a I.T. Jack of all trades there...and they pay is in my area, pretty good, but abysmal compared to my last job..*sigh*
With that said, I can say that there are a lot of things that I despise about Windows machines, the consistant need to run Spyware removal tools (Spybot S&D, Spysweeper, Ad-Aware, etc.), manually editing registry entries, and all the typical Windows things that have to be dealt with. At the same time however, My windows box at work is fine for what I mostly use it for, email and word processing. It is acceptable (at best) for Photoshop.
My Mac on the other hand, is great for programming, testing perl, c and other things that I may be putting onto our webservers right out of the box with OS X (Panther) installed. It is outstanding for Photoshop, editing video, audio and other tasks that the Mac has traditionally been good at. I would never dream of playing games on it though, because that would require me to use VPC for the games I want to play and that would be too slow:)
Our un*x boxen are just that. Our production servers. They work, and until we replace them with the XServes we are hoping to get, I have no complaints about them. They just do their job, but I wouldn't want them as desktops to do my normal work on either.
Every machine I use has its purpose, and I aquired each one for the purpose I felt it was best suited to. In my personal collection of machines, the majority of them are Macs, I use them simply because they work, I don't come home and worry about things like the Sasser Worm and it's variants and all the associatedSpyware that I would likely encounter were I running Windows at home.
It is a personal choice, based on my needs. I know that I could run some
Just 2 weeks ago, there I was out having a great time dancing at one of the local hotspots...My ex-girlfriend was totally shitfaced and asked me for a ride home...Naturally I said sure, because I wanted her to get home safe. I had not been drinking that evening (pretty normal for me)..
We get into my car and after securing our seatbelts, turining on the lights, etc. we take off. I exit the parking lot and a cop that was going the other way makes a U-turn. I say to my ex-gf "We are going to get pulled over in just a second." We stop at the 4 way stop (2 lanes in each direction) and since there is no traffic I start to cross the intersection. About that time some pedestrians across the intersection and on the opposite side of the road start to cross the street.
Not 2 seconds later I get pulled over (no surprise there). The officer comes to the car window and I ask him how he is doing, his response: "Apparently better than you are"...I was like "Oh shit, I'm getting a ticket for SOMETHING..."
Ten minutes later Officer cocksucker comes back and writes me a ticket for failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian...WHAT A DICKHEAD!!! Like I was supposed to stop in the middle of the intersection and wait for these people to cross the street after I had already started moving BEFORE they tried to cross the street...
This "Officer" was out to write a DUI, and I just happened to be the lucky person leaving the general area at the time...The INTERESTING part is that I am out at this club almost nightly and only drink (more than 1) when I am NOT driving...90% of the time I drink Diet Pepsi or Coffee (OK, so bar coffee is not generally Starbucks...but you get the idea...
This is clearly a case of a cop having NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN HARASS...THe most fucked part about this is, that I moved back to WA State just over a year ago from NJ...and I'll be goddamned if I haven't been pulled over more in a year back in here WA than I was in 5 years in NJ....
It came up with nothing when I did it within Safari (MacOS X)
It is absolutely disgusting to say the least that in some areas qualified people are turned down for jobs because they lack a piece of paper

If they have not read them yet, there is of course Douglas Adams' Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy. It is too bad The Movie sucked the sweat off a dead man's balls, because the books were GREAT

Every law firm that I have consulted for/worked for in an I.T. role has actually used Macs. MIght seem strange, but it is true
