Kerry uses anti-outsourcing as a convenient campaign issue, but what will he actually do about it? My guess is nothing, because he receives corporate campaign contributions just like Bush. Secondly, the president really doesn't have any say in this type of thing. Decisions are made by the companies that are doing the outsourcing and any legislative attempt to limit this will backfire. That being said, it wouldn't be a bad idea to look at the tax system that allows companies to get away with paying no taxes by conducting operations outside the country.
And this is what will bite poor Scotty in the ass. Even if he swears up and down that he removes people from his lists, nobody will believe him since he is known to have harvested email addresses from whois info, dictionary attacks, and other unethical tactics. I feel no sympathy for a 'businessman' like this who gets to lie in the bed he made.
$100! Here's the 89 cent solution. Buy some disposable plastic bags, you know, the high quality Ziplock kind, and smooth out a section over the lens so as not to detract from the picture. Unless you have an extremely nice camera, you won't even notice any reduction in picture quality. If you're really concerned, double bag the camera. If the outer bag tears, replace it. That's what is nice about getting a bunch of bags real cheap, you don't have to worry about replacing them when they rip.
I mostly agree with the "Steal this site" article. Users will be unlikely to be offended by text and simple banner advertising. Using a little extra bandwidth to download a couple of GIFs and JPEGs is not too much of a price to pay for free web content. But when ads became overly intrusive, that's when I started using the ad blockers. I'm not about to let a bunch of ads pop up and swarm across the screen, with full video and sound, just so I can attempt to read read some lame sports article. If the advertising industry pisses off the public as much as the telemarketers did, they will suffer a similar fate (extinction).
For all practical purposes, its illegal now in the US. If you sign up for the national do not call list, your telemarketing calls will virtually disappear. The fines for violations are stiff and some big company, I think it was Worldcom, was actually fined for calling people on the list. As for "charity" callers which are exempt, they must now display identification on caller ID, so its easy to not answer their calls. Telemarketing has, thank god, become mostly a thing of the past.
The day they start putting an RIAA tax on all storage media in the U.S. is the day I never pay for a CD again. I'll download, burn and share without feeling any guilt whatsoever knowing that I (along with everyone else) is paying for the shit whether we listen to music or not. Hey, if Socialism works for the record companies, why can't we make it work in our favor too?
Let me add one important thing: If you have a significant amount of credit card debt, PAY IT OFF! Being in a low paying job, or for that matter unemployed, always sucks. But it is so much worse when you are paying 20+% interest just for the privilege of staying in debt. If you are thinking of buying some gadget that costs too much for you to be able to pay for within 2-3 months, you can't afford it. Wait until you can. Keeping huge credit card balances is one way to ensure that you NEVER get ahead financially.
It sounds like firing this guy was the right thing to do, but do you honestly think that ALL college grads act like this jackass did? Having spent 5 years in college myself before working for 3 years, the most important thing I have learned is that there is not ONE way to do everything. You must consider the best solution for the given situation. Open your mind a little more and hire some people with diverse experiences but good problem solving skills, and most importantly good listening skills, and I think you and your company will be better off.
Well, then just vote for Kerry and it will all be OK. If you believe Kerry won't make decisions based on special interest group contributions, then I've got a great bridge to sell you.
While I agree with the parent poster, it is worth keeping in mind that recovering from a drastically low starting salary takes a long time. For the last few years, companies have been giving annual raises in the range of 2%, if you get one at all. I've heard of many people taking entry level jobs at really really low salaries with the promise of a big raise next year, which fails to materialize. So be willing to start low, but not too low.
I'd be more concerned with someone outfitting a computerized meter to have auto-ticketing capabilities. As soon as the time expires, a picture is snapped of your license plate and a ticket is either printed out or mailed to you later. People would be remembering the good old days when all they had to worry about was the meter maids.
What are you going to do when your job is outsourced, Mr. Hotshot Manager? It does happen, you know. If all the developers are in India and Indian managers will work for less, than hey, lets move all but the very top managers to India as well for even more cost cutting.
If I thought that voting for Kerry would make things better, I would. But I can't convince myself that he would somehow create millions of new jobs all on his own. I'd prefer a president to NOT mess with the system and push through a lot of new well-meaning regulations that are supposed to help create jobs but that will inevitably have the opposite effect. This being said, I do think that Bush is totally out of touch with people who are looking for work and doesn't really see any problem here.
I think this type of business would have been a lot more successful about a year ago. At that time, the mainstream tech press was making it sound like SCO had a case, and nobody had seen (or not seen) enough of the evidence to really say much either way. It seemed unlikely that they could get billions of dollars from IBM, but people were a bit scared. Lately, their case has almost fallen apart and investors are starting to pull out. Not only has their stock fallen, but they have mostly shown their hand, which consists of suing people who they have business agreements with. If someone has no relationship with SCO and has been running Linux all this time, I don't see why they would suddenly get concerned about being sued by SCO. But I agree, this type of insurance is certainly better than sending SCO a check.
Not that I really care about what some dumbass AC says, but I have been to Europe, and yes, anything you carry into an airport or onto a plane can be searched whenever or however they want. Europe is hardly a bastion of freedom. In fact, the last time I departed London they were questioning anyone checking luggage and asking exactly what they intended to do with any electronic items in their bags (um, charge my laptop batteries).
You're telling me they don't have security checks at airports in Europe? Even when you're just traveling to a different city in the same country? I call bullshit.
Which is why they are considering action described in this discussion? The FCC proposal benefits corporations and not the people. Don't expect nationalized health care to work any differently. Really, I do wish that everyone in power was working for the common good, but I'm not naive enough to think it will ever really be that way.
If it were easy to copy entire books, I guarantee library photocopiers would either have been outlawed or their use would have been heavily restricted. The only reason publishers didn't see it as much of a threat is because it was only practical to copy a few pages at a time.
This is nothing Apple could not easily work out on their own. A partnership with Real would not add any value to the service.
As a side note, why does anyone care about, much less pay for, streaming video from CNN? If that's what you want to see, turn on the TV. Most broadband users have cable or satellite, so I'm not really sure what CNN is thinking here.
Considering how Real is intent on having their player monopolize your system as much as possible, the idea of installing it using drive-by downloads, Gator style, would not be all that surprising.
That's exactly what I was wondering. What is the benefit for Apple? Music players are a dime a dozen. Why partner with the most hated name in player software when they could come up with their own very easily? Unless Real comes up with a new business model that actually adds some value to the process, and offers something that their competitors dont have, they are finished.
I do hope you sued for false arrest. No way could you have been legitimately arrested. They did it strictly as a scare tactic, hoping that you would crack and confess everything that you did along with some terrible things that you didn't do.
they can strip you of your US citizenship for no reason at all, you know.
Do you have any proof of this, or are you just spouting off propaganda? List some examples of American Citizens losing their citizenship for no reason at all. For that matter, try finding ANY example of an American being stripped of their citizenship involuntarily. It doesn't happen.

I'll bet the RFIDs won't try to steal crap out of my bags, unlike some certain low paid airport worker.

You mean like the Universal Service Fee, which seems to be prone to abuse.
