There are some comments about how leaping, ducking and rolling would test any VR system's limits.
When was the last time anyone lept, ducked or rolled ? You don't want to ACTUALLY do it do you ? If you do, go outside and have a game of "actual reality"
'When that wasn't done, it turned itself off as it was designed to do. But the backup also failed.'... and further more...
'"On a regular basis, the FAA should have been downing that primary system and watching that backup system come up,"'
Sounds like they bought a lemon. A rebooting, bluescreening, page swapping, farting, Microsoft LEMON !!! A system that needs to be "downed" regularly and switches itself off to avoid "data overload"
Someone must be laughing whilst rolling in money right now. They would avoid flying the Lear jets tho, if they were smart....
I worry that a pill like this will be accompanied with a lot of ignorance.
Pain killers, flu tablets and caffiene are already overused by many people in the workforce to help them get through another working day.
I drink two cups of coffee a day. However, when I was pulling 14 hour days, I drank six to eight cups of coffee. At the end of the day, I was exhausted and sick. I didn't even know it was the coffee. Many people think that if you just keep drinking it you work better.
How hard will it be to convince people to take something like this ? Not very hard ! How many people will avoid a drug with side effects ? Hardly anyone ! ALL drugs have side effects ! Do people care how drugs actually work ? How many people who take them know how Neurofen, Prozac or even Alka Selter works ?
All this "the people will rise up against the drugs" sounds extremely naive to me. The People will put just about anything in their mouths.
Whew, that was theraputic. Time for a stress pill.
If CVD were caused solely by infection, then there would be no correlation to diet
Unless the bacteria were relying on nutrients in our bloodstream.
Furthermore, if infection were the primary in CV events like stroke & heart attack, any person with cardiovascular disease that became immunosuppressed would have an immediate vascular event of some kind.
Unless it is a cumulative effect, like a bloom that protects itself by "plaquing".
This is why a lot of "on the edge" theories don't get into 1st tier journals; they speak in absolutes.
I found some absolutes in your argument that you might want to go and correct.
Hmmmm.... from what I read of "A Brief History Of Time" (ABHOT), your typical black hole is made up of an event horizon ( the spherical boundary inside of which light cannot escape out of ) and a singularity, which sits smack bang in the middle of that bounday.
From outside the event horizon, we cannot ( in thermo terms ) extract any energy from it. We cannot measure the orderliness of it ( indirect theoretical measurements are proposed ). The singularity is a different matter. (...lots of complicated stuff about infinitely dense materials etc... ) we have maximum entropy at that singularity.
However, if that singularity was really heavy, like say, the mass of the present universe, then the event horizon would be a very long way from that singularity ( if it even exists ).
Hence, it could be imagined that we are inside the event horizon of the universe and not even be anywhere near the singularity in the middle ! Does the universe have a middle ? Well if it's now decided to be the shape of a funnel, maybe it does !
What does this mean in the big picture ? Don't buy real estate on the outer fringes. The view is lousy.

If we found DNA on Mars we could be confident that somebody was sharing asteroids at some point. ( i.e. case 1,2 or 3 )
If we found life that didn't rely on DNA we still couldn't rule 1,2 or 3 out, because any previous life system ( of which DNA is only one possibility ) could easily have evolved into something else in a dramatically new environment ( like another planet ).
However, if we found life without DNA, I believe that a good hard look at 4 would be justified.
Just how many asteroids go bouncing off multiple planets anyway ? The chances must be quite small !
When I cook pasta, and I am in a hurry, or I don't care if it tastes a little different to how I want it to, I buy a jar of premade pasta sauce.
When I am cooking for a special occasion, I wouldn't even dream of it. I know how to make a killer sauce, so I can make my own from scratch. The taste is always tailored to the occasion when I do so. The only other consideration is that it takes longer.
Curry
On the other hand, I do not know how to make curry from scratch. Thus, no matter what the situation calls for, I must use the premade pastes that come in the jars. However, I have become good at choosing which jar to use for a particular theme, and how to add various ingredients to push the flavour this way and that. It's not perfect, but most of the time it's quite good.
Choice
If you know how to roll your own killer data persistence layer, and you think that for a particular case it is warranted, then why not do it ?
However, if you don't know how to do it, or you need to save time ( other reasons can apply ) or you know that this particular library is just right for the job, then why not use an existing framework ?
I think it's silly to get religious on an issue like choosing the ingredients. It depends on the skill of the developers and the situation they are designing/developing for.
Say I went to the hardware shop to build "Mousetrap 2010 - The Terminator" and I put on an 'inspired' face ( whatever that looks like. I'll have to look in the mirror next time I have a really good idea ). Do you think I'll be the only person who know's this list ? If it gets "collated" does that mean the same as "published" ?
Also, open question: can video face recognition software detect moods yet ? Just wondering.

regular maintenance = constant rebooting ?
... and further more ...
Also note the article goes on to say:
'When that wasn't done, it turned itself off as it was designed to do. But the backup also failed.'
