  1. Why use them at all? on Why Are We Still Using 8.3 Filenames? · · Score: 1

Use the description of a file as a unique identifier? I cannot believe that operating systems perpetuate this ridiculous practice.

  2. Standardize on Clickthroughs on Making Banner Ads Suck Less · · Score: 1

I'd click on a lot more advertisements if I knew what I would be getting into when I did. Clicking on a banner advertisement is the Russian roulette of web browsing: the page could appear in the existing browser or new browser window, clicking could forward you to page after page making it difficult to return to the original page, there could be new pop-up ads, cookies, or even the dreaded 'whack-a-mole' sites.

Make all advertisements from your site go to a standard-sized (length, width, bytes) web page with a few pictures, relevant links, an email address for additional information, and make the whole thing load in a new browser window. Then, let us know that'd you've done this on your site, and I think you'll see a change of opinions about banner advertisements.

  3. Re:Different for different situations on What Kind of Office Space Do You Want to Work In? · · Score: 1

I just finished reading Peopleware. Nowhere do DeMarco and Lister state that the best configuration is one office per person. I believe they were attempting to emphasize that thinking about workspace configuration is necessary for high-tech production environments.

You may be referring to their productivity metrics. They offer some of their productivity findings in chapter eight. Illustrated on figure 8.1, given any metrics of performance for which they tested, 2.5 to 1 people yielded the highest level of productivity. They emphasize in their conclusion that this "does not prove that a better workplace will help people perform better. It may only indicate that people who perform better tend to gravitate toward organizations that provide better workplace." In fact, they go on to say, in later chapters, that they believe developers may often work better in two or three person teams then alone.

  4. Supernatural Beast City, Vampire Hunter D on Essential Anime · · Score: 1

Here are two that you probably have not heard of, but are my two favorites. IMHO, You have to watch them without subtitles and, of course, without dubbing. You won't understand most of the plot, but it won't take anything away from the great action scenes. That's why you are watching anyway, right?

  5. Re:Godammit... on House To Hold Hearing On Napster · · Score: 1

I actually become nauseous seeing these 'Holier than thou...' attitudes exemplified in this post. You and the many others defend copyright laws like a religious zealot! Even the subject line of your message calls on the name of 'God', as if to establish the severity of the subject matter to which you are referring. It is just a law! It's not written into to Bill of Rights, Constitution, Ten Commandments or any other supposedly infallible set of rules. And what undeniable truths has the user known as 'Carnage4Life' taught us about this law? Basically the same thing that we see on any given topic on Slashdot... that anyone who has a different opinion than him can shove it. You mention that you 'plan to work for a software company', so I assume you are still fairly young. I hope that you can learn to open your mind a little before it is too late.

  6. "There's not going to be much music left," says Co on The Dark Side Of Napster · · Score: 1

What, will the human desire to communicate in the form of beats and prose dissipate all because of Napster? Sounds like these artists need to do some self-evaluation of why they are producing music in the first place. Why don't you ask a garage band how Napster affects their desire to make music, or a Native American's desire to pass on their history through song and dance? Do you think these genuine musicians will care about the free distribution of their music? No, those that care are those in the music industry that feel they are producing a sellable commodity. I say to hell with them. If the Napster community could filter out copyrighted songs and only trade un-copyrighted songs (as if there were such a thing these days) I believe that they would do it. People want to hear music in its most primitive form. Napster allows them to obtain it in a much cheaper form than the music industry. It's a no-brainer, really!

  7. $.02 Ergonomic Keyboard on Ergonomic Keyboards · · Score: 1

Worked on my keyboard today!! I had been searching for a long time for an ergonomic keyboard. When I saw this discussion, I read and re-read all of the messages and really started thinking seriously about purchasing a high end ergonomic keyboard because the knuckles of my fingers were really starting to hurt! I thought that a more expensive or more ergonomic keyboard would help me. One thing I decided after a while of searching was that I really do not like or use the keyboard number pad. So, I opened up my own keyboard to see if I could saw the bugger off. Well, what I discovered was that there is this big steel plate right under the keys. There is hardly anything from stopping you from hitting it with the keys. In fact, I think that is the purpose of it. So as you type away, you are jamming your fingers by impacting the keys against this big metal plate over, and over, and over. No wonder my hands felt like hell after chatting or typing!

What I just did was to remove the heavy steel plate and replace it will thick (but soft) cardboard. Now the typing impact is much kinder on my hands and the keyboard weighs much less. It is a little difference in typing than before, but I seem to have adjusted by the time I have written these words. Pretty good use of ergonomics, is it not?

  8. Creative Labs computer not a good thing... on Creative Labs PC · · Score: 1

Creative Labs has gone downhill recently. If this announcement was made five years ago, then I'd be the first in line to buy one. But today, their products are plauged with compatibility problems, and their customer service is horrible. I would not recommend these computers to anyone.
