This is yet another piece of proof that Ask/. is picked at random. Or an even scarier thought/. is gonna try catering to 13 year old gamers & script kiddies. RTFM/RTFHT
A friend of a pal o'mine recieved one of these junk pages - got pissed off. He just happened to work at a medium sized ISP - he set a bank of 50 modems to dial the pager spammers 1-800 number inceasently for 2 days. The spammer company seemed to dissapear after that:)
"Uhhh hey slashdotters, uhhh what graphics card company is best for realtime high end video. My friends and I have been arguing this for a while. I say it's Nvidia, while Johnny says it's gonna be 3Dfx soon, and my other bud Petey insists it's S3.
Of course budget constraints are a major issue - I must be able to purchase the card with the $300.00 I've saved up from my allowance & shoveling walks all winter. So what do you guys think?"
I'm sure there are waay better questions submitted to Ask Slashdot than this - Aren't there???
I have a notebook with a PCTel modem built in (TI Extensa) I would love to not have to pack my external around with me.
Soft modem support in linux is a good thing, just think how many fewer times you'll have to respond to newbies "Is it a winmodem?"
I've talked to many people who have installed linux on their box, only to find that they have a winmodem. So before they have a chance to see just how great linux they go back to winblowz 'cuz they can't afford a new modem at the time.
The more hardware supported, the more people will try linux & maybe stick with it!
As for stealing CPU cycles & driver having root access, of course you're not going to use these things on a mulituser box that already has a high CPU load, just like you wouldn't want to use software 3D on a graphics workstation.
It's like any other piece of hardware/software you can take it or leave it! Unless you got unwittingly stuck with it like me & millions of other winmodem owners:(
I doubt they will have both the linux & win95 binaries on the Loki release, but I can see Bungie doing it for future releases. It doesn't make sense for them to distribute a separate CDrom or DVD for each OS (Winbloze & Mac come on the same disc already).
BTW any of you who haven't seen or played the game IT ROCKS, The fighting is better than Warcraft and you don't have to build a bunch of chit.
I don't know much about the inner workings of cpus, but anytime I someone suggests of a way to make Gates 1000 time smaller, it puts a smile on my head:)
