  1. USB drive reliability on Condensing Your Life on to a USB Flash Drive? · · Score: 1

My wife washed the 512M Lexar jump drive I gave her with the rest of our laundry. It didn't make it into the dryer. I left it on the desk for about 10 days to dry out and it worked fine. That's not a scientific endorsement of the item, but an anecdotal observation.

  2. /. will be next to get sued on PetsWarehouse vs. Mailing List · · Score: 1

Based on the last 2 ammendments to the case it seems logical that the plaintif will include these posts on /. as libelous too.

    I'll miss my /. (snif)

  3. The Zen of job satisfaction on Do You Like Your Job? · · Score: 1

I'm a manager, first level. I have 6 folks who report to me. I'm right in the middle of the sandwich! The people below me hate their jobs because of the nonsense of changing priorities and inconsistent values.

I get the complaints from both those below me AND those above. One thing I've learned is that there is a tricky dynamic in the relationships of skip level ranks. What I mean is, you may have a good working relationship with your boss, but the relationship of you and your bosses boss is much more subtle. Regardless of my rank in the past and present, I have always faced great challenges with my bosses boss.

These days I try to work extra hard on that relationship as it seems to improve the overall work experience.

  4. solid state drives years ago on Why Not Solid State Hard Drives? · · Score: 1

When I worked for a large toy retailer we used tons of DEC hardware and we built systems in 1998 with DEC solid state 4G SCSI attached drives.

I seem to remember the required a lot of maintenance.

  5. BSD isn't dead yet on Is BSD Dying? · · Score: 1

I was on an interview last week and we discussed my BSD/Sendmail experience. My host completely dismissed that experience because "companies don't really have a need for technologists that know BSD. They don't know what it is because it's not really used that much." If the look of shock on my face wasn't enough I contested his statement with the assertion that a landslide majority of core internet systems run on BSD. To this he replied "well, BSD is really a set and forget system and doesn't have as many problems as HPUX and Sun."

I guess he's right. Those of us who use/choose BSD choose it because it's a strong reliable platform that will perform. But that kind of attitude will end up putting us out of work!
I'll buy my first "flawed system" book this weekend... let's see, are we in the mood for HP, Sun or AIX?
