I think the reason why Brad Pitt is big in Japan is movies like Fight Club. They understand dark, gritty overtones in movies unlike us North Americaners (some, but not all, mind you) who want gooey, happy, pappy crap.
The Japanese grasp the dark side of life as part of life and acknowledge it, instead of ignoring it (ie; death in general). They may look down on something culturally, but they won't deny that it exists.
