    Yeah, that makes installing a binary on Windows look like an nigh impossible task.

    More properly, there are some horrible hacks out there who misuse HTTP. In particular, anyone who uses the GET method to change server state should have a finger removed.

    Browsers, on the other hand, have implemented some horrible hacks in lieu of properly implementing the protocol. That's more along the lines of your complaint.

    It's pretty messy with the pointy and the clicky but from the command line it's easy to manage, assuming you know what you're doing.

    I'm going off the topic and on a rant

    In general, that's never true. Visual UI is a much more intuitive and manageable metaphor for several reasons, not the least of which that it enables feedback to user without displacing things. The problem you've experienced is likely the result of a poor GUI, not GUI in general. Since you appear to be a UNIX user, I'm not surprised. The weakest guis tends to appear there. I've found, however, that with thought into how the work is accomplished, nothing beats a well designed graphical interface.

    I'll preface this by actually giving my opinion about the Patriot act: it's a rights violating piece of shit. Didn't expect that, did you? In my post, I wasn't even referring to the Patriot act, I was referring to my parent post.

    As regards the point to which you (sort of) replied, could I be any more correct? My post got modded down immediately. Typical slashdot behavior - it violates the leftist groupthink, so it must be suppressed. No skin off my back, really. It demonstrates I know what I'm talking about.

    In any case, I don't think you know what a conservative is. It has nothing to do with the Republican party. I can tell you that much. I can tell you're not drawing those distinctions, though - you're just interested in propogating your point of view. That's fine - I participate in this leftist feedback loop site for sheer amusement. There's no insight to be had here on anything that isn't strictly technical.

    The real problem with old programmers that I've seen is that they figure they're owed a huge salary even though their skills haven't kept up with modern needs. Of course, this is based on a limited and invalid sample. It't not like time in is a valid reason to expect a high wage - experience counts, but productivity counts a hell of a lot more.

    Keep believing that because you do something a certain way, anyone who doesn't is inferior. It's not true, of course, and your belief will never make it so, but please continue it.     The truth of the matter is, in enterprises of a certain size, the licensing costs aren't much of a consideration at all. tIn fact, they're basically insignificant compared o the costs of administration. I'm not taking a side on that one way or the other. I'm just saying that if a few thousand bucks is a big deal to you, then don't use stuff you have to buy, because obviously you have different priorities.

    In other words, the cost doesn't actually have to be justified. It's obviously acceptable to the market at large, whether or not you're willing to pay it.
