Thanks for the Java flame. I was worried that there wouldn't be any offtopic ranting in this story, but you eased my worries just a few comments into it.

You haven't actually made a distinction. People have a choice in operating systems, browsers, and search engines.

The monopoly status conveyed upon Microsoft was more about business practices. The choices presented through competition are and were plentiful.

It's not the people who can afford and buy an occasional ticket that I railed against specifically, although the fact that they support such an evil, exploitative system makes me sick to my stomach. No, it's the people who are giving their money away when they can barely afford to buy food and shelter that worry me. It's a false dream, heavily advertised and targeted to the people who can least afford it.

It's not about being smug and superior, it's about being moral.

I don't know a lot of 21 year olds who decide to leave the stove on all day after making tea. I do, however, know three 80+ year olds who have done it this year.

Totally anecdotal, and therefore useless, but it illustrates the point: 21 year olds make bad decisions due to lack of experience. 80 year olds make bad decisions because their brains are failing.

Old people point at the miscues of youth as a distraction technique, but aging cannot be stopped by winning an argument using logical fallacies. It just keeps on coming. Go ahead and fool yourself into believing that you won't be hit, but you will.
