  1. Re:who cares? on Open Cable Standard Not So Open · · Score: 1

how would it be a good thing for the industry if some hardware/software hacker decided to reporgram his tv or set top box so that he could get stuff for free or (more sad that we would have to think about doing this than anything) over ride watermarking which stops recording of events.

True, but what you fail to realize is that restricting people this way, only SPURS the hardware/software hackers... Just look at all the equipment that has been hacked, not to mention software. There needs to be another solution, and restricting a person from doing it is NOT the answer. It also spurs a black market for such devices, thus potentially giving funds only to create more crime in the world.

What next? Are they going to create proprietary sidewalks and force us to wear certain shoes to walk on it, yet call it an open standard?

This is bullshit.. I have had a Hauppauge WinTV card in my computer for 7 years (okay in a few computers, but still the same card). Works great, saves me a lot of money and space, as my computer is my full entertainment center. If these people think I am going to have buy a device with a TV built into it to use the cable service, they are sadly mistaken. If i am forced to do this then I am going to do one of the following:

    1. Go to satellite
    2. Get the device required, hack it (oh and it will be hackable no matter how much they try to hackproof it, if it can be built, it can be hacked). Get shitloads of karma on slashdot, and maybe get myself on the front page.
    3. Say to hell with cable tv or satellite all together and just buy DVD's, and get DSL for internet access.

I think the cable tv companies should learn a thing or two from the RIAA before they start their own major campagins, that is if they want to remain profitable...

In this digital age, the consumer has more organized power, and you don't want to piss the ones giving you your bread and butter, and your dodge vipers off.

Yes.. Look at the U.S. where this shit is allowed.. We have companies suing each other everday... Do we really want to have our *freedoms* taken away because the government, in all their stupidity, outlaws things such as reverse engineering? Isn't a government supposed to be for the people, not mainly for the rich who own companies and can influence through lobbying, as we have seen so prevelant since we have so many republicans in office now? Look at the mess the DMCA has caused... Do we really want all our tax dollars going into the court systems over stupid lawsuits like it is happening here in the U.S.? I mean geez its now the dOt-sue era here! In fact maybe they should have another TLD called .sue then we can put all the lawyers domains under it, not to mention SCO.

Give me a break.. Having the freedom to do things such as reverse engineering actually STIMULATES growth.. It forces each party to make a better product, which in turn is good for the consumer and not to mention the economy...

I am glad a lot of EU gov'ts *seem* to think this way, unlike our esoteric government here in the U.S.

Maybe i should move somewhere else... It is only going to get worse here...

I have been checking out Dillo. It is still quite young, but the speed is amazing and the browser is remarkably stable. It is so nice being able to load cpans full list of perl modules in a mere fraction of the time it takes firebird or mozilla, or hell even konqueror. Oh and when you click the back button, the cache is so much faster.. On a cached copy of cpan's module list I am able to load it in 1 second compared to mozilla's or firebird's 15 to 20 seconds it takes to fully load. This browser is well worth checking out, and I hope more developers get involved. Personally I can see where this browser could actually replace mozilla as it gets more mature.

If any litigation happens because of their patent, I hope netflix wins.. Wal-mart is getting way to fucking big, and we all know how big companies with large amounts of capital like to do to their employees and other competition. As for Blockbuster I hope they go bankrupt, fuck you and your goddamned late fees, oh and this 12 noon video return shit is absolutly wrong... I will never set foot in a Blockbuster (aka BillBuster) again!

Sorry for the rant, but it got to the point where I was paying $20 a month in late fees because blockbuster had this 12pm return policy and generally I do not get up until past 12pm.

  12. This act.. on Piracy Deterrence and Education Act Introduced · · Score: 0, Redundant

Given the technical nature of the Internet, all this act will do is push file sharing underground.. A new system will be developed that is totally anonymous and will be impossible for the FBI to successfully track them. (private wireless networks anyone?) Congress does not seem to realize that they cannot police the Internet like any medium.. If they actually knew a damn thing about the internet and would stop listening to their lobbyists who all want control over each and every consumer on the internet, then maybe things such as this, the DMCA, these state super dmcas, and all these other stupid bills would stop coming up every month or so it seems.

The more control we allow the government over our lives the more the government will take from us.

    Power == Control == Corruption

I look around and see all this patriotism in the united states, and I just do not understand how blind some of these people are. Granted the US isn't the worst country to live in (but if we dont do something soon, i fear it could end up this way, especially if another terror attack happens and more bills that take away our freedom and privacy are passed).

What the FUCK has the US become??
