Consider this -
IE has more than 80% of the browser market share
IE is coming out with a brand new version boasting a lot of features with Vista
IE does not make ANY MONEY for Microsoft
So the question you have to ask is.. What was Dvorak Smoking when he wrote this ?
I dont think Bill Gates became the richest Guy in the world writing a lot of checks;)
We have to remember that distance education is always a step-child compared to in-class one-on-one teacher-student interaction - Yes - its a major step forard for all Indian kids who cant afford any kind of education - but I dont think we can really outsource teaching that soon - there are important elements of personal attention and interaction that are missing from remote educational systems like these.
So dont worry about losing your job any time soon !
Its true that Sun's claim to fame -
was there Enteprise worthy Unix clone tuned to a particular hardware (theirs) for which they provided - support and solutions - (Sounds familiar ?)
Consider Sun's positioning for a moment-
1.Their IP in the Unix space is almost but gone - with Linux and RH offering cheaper alternatives.
2.And with the demise of their Solaris stronghold - Cheaper off the shelf assemblies from Dell is eating their server (hardware) market.
3.They still haven't figured out how to make money out of Java.
4.They have a lot of cash on hand - thanks to selling out to Redmond.
So what would you do if you were in their position ? Embrace RH and write your eulogy ?
You have to remember Bill is first a Businessman and then a Philanthropist - What bill is indulging here is what is known as Social Investing - Heres how he makes up for the 20mil he spends -
1.Inculcate the 'Microsoft Culture' into the every Person/Animal/THing that ever steps into that building -
2.Set up a future harvesting ground for hiring into his empire when the time is right. Now that they have already been taught the 'Microsoft way'
3.Spread the good word about Microsoft - 20mil worth of marketing does not seem to have the same effect.
and yes..
4.Maybe help the academic community actually grow - PROVIDED - its in the 'Microsoft Way'
Not so Poor After all Bill.
My take on the whole thing - the one thing that definitely does happen to technologies and systems in general ( including OSs) is that the easier it becomes to use it - the easier it becomes to Ab(use) it - for me security considerations are merely unchecked abuses of the system - To make things clearer - take the analogy of Email - the original intent was for free and easy communication - which also mean for spammers - a free and easy guerilla marketing tool - so - in essence - I would say that Useability does imply - more chances of Ab-using it !

A fitting tribute to hackerdom , geekhood or whatever else you want to call the spirit of playful innovation and problem solving.
SO why am I still paying $30 dollars for a lucky-if-I-can-get-300kbps-all-the-time-connection
and calling it broadband ?
