Wow a Cannibal Corpse fan on Slashdot? I saw them a month back in their home town, Buffalo, NY along with The Black Dahilia murder. I really wonder how many/few metal/hardcore fans there are on slashdot. Not that is matters but in the spirit of how humans look for ways to find similiarities (or differences to hate or dislike people by) it iterests me with this demographic. Anyway yeah good stuff, doesn't Germany actual censor some of their stuff? Of course if you grew up in parts of Buffalo you'd be making music like this too, well maybe not who cares Buffalo is pretty cool in some ways. Moving on...

I'm amazed. Someone's actually hit on an idea of capitalism!!! I agree with a number of sides. I back up nearly all of my music CDs because I'm a god damn moron and scratch them. So I have them on my computer in [insert music format that people like so I don't have to hear you should use OGG, MP3, AAC, FLAC or any other acronyms and formats... anyway], a burned copy in my car and the original for my CD player and headphone audiophile use :-P . Now anyway my point is I too would want to back up more expensive investments because I'm an idiot. However, I can't always get my way and neither can everyone else (that's reserved for people who are just so much cooler and well connected than me... or something.. anyway again). So I have choices, I could stop being a moron and take care of my CDs. I could boycott the band, distributor, whoever that puts copy protection on my CDs (but none I own do anyway because I'm stupid or something) or I could destroy my CD player like a crazed man in front of city hall or something to make a point. And of course there's a million other ways of making a point. But as the parent of this reply pointed out, if you're all really so opposed to Sony pushing this issue and the courts doing so as well etc. your dollar is your power. If everyone just stopped buying PS2s and games for an undefined amount of time, although it wouldn't probably hurt Sony too much (financially- they're huge, right? but I don't know someone correct me on this and anything else) they would probably look at the issue close and what the consumers want. Anyway I don't know I'm a moron and a slacker really and I don't like settling with a compromise or "losing out" but when push comes to shove on some issues you have to take "drastic" action... granted it's a game console but I am relating to my sentiment lately being a US citizen. Arg I'm frustrated and hypocritical and stupid.... I'm quitting now. I hope someone sees some worth in this or can comment against this afterall I lean much more from peopel tearing apart my thoeries than people saying "yeah"... of course it hurts... but do I cry? Well I do a little. Forgot what that's from but anyway I'm done.

Simply put. I agree... alright I can't resist.. I agree with you on nearly all points you have made. I think it's important to examine these contradictory images that are being supported by certain organizations. Oh well it's all context and what you're looking at coupled with money... arg oh well. There's just an enormous amount of information (information I'm meaning written, spoken, acted and all ways in which the aforementioned and other not mentioned ways of conveying ideas is captured.. wait that kind of is redundant and obscure... sorry I hope you get the idea.)

AHahahahaaha that's an excellent point. Although I don't know what Madonna, Britney Spears or Christinia Agusjlkdjlskajfl's position with the RIAA is but I believe I can make a relatively safe assumption.

Parenting... now there's a thought. I am not a parent so I can not speak knowingly about the challenges of being a parent, socio-economical factors aside. I think that as the internet and all of it's ramifications become more ubiquitous the argument of such things will come down to the argument of anything. Such as letting your kids go to a part of town. Letting your kids spend time with other kids, etc. The difference however is that managing a child's access to these things can be difficult but at the same time it seems no different than being able to disallow them to go and see and do other things which you would not endorse. Kids will be kids... One thing that parents can be happy (happier?) about is that at least when you go to the "bad side of the internet" they are in less immediate physical danger as opposed to being in "dangerous" situations in "real life", playing with fire, going to a bar etc. whatever situation you like I hope I have drawn some logical conclusions and am analyzing this with an open mind. If not please reply.

I completely agree. I use the example of "upcoming" star, Hilary Duff. She's like 15 and it's ridiculous how she's being marketed. Check out this link http://www.rollingstone.com/features/featuregen.as p?pid=1915&cf=2047288 . This isn't really the RIAA but she has released an album now I guess. My favorite part of the article is the quote, " 'I was never that into music,' she [Hilary Duff] admits." I mean come on... I don't know it's just my opinion but it's unfortunate that this is what is proliferating. Oh well that is what pop is and is about. (I think.. I dunno but that's how I preceive it)

Wow. Someone here actually has a good idea of how things are done as far as audio measurement. Nice post to deflect other people's ignorance on certain subjects which they don't seem to be trying to hard to change. If you dont' know about a certain subject, just don't say anything. Oh well that's just my opinion. It takes all kinds in this world and I mean that sincerely.

I'm 20 now and after learning calculus I'd taken it upon myself to learn the Newton-Rhapson method for finding square roots. I find this more intuitive than using a more "algorithm" based approach. Also I am a very big "fan" of series expansions and enjoy them. With that said, I've played with approximating trigonometric functions, logarithmic functions, approximating Pi using the simple (and SLOW) arc tangent method, and of course approximating e using it's simple series.

On another note, I hated math from Kindergarten (there's really not much math in Kindergarten though, right?) up to 12th grade. After failing my Calculus 1 (Basic limits and derivatives Riemann sums and basic antiderivative leading up to basic integration) course I didn't give up and retook it and really engrossed myself in it, I got an A second time around and left with a very deep understanding (and appreciation) of basic calculus, I then took "Calculus 2" (basically series and more advanced integration and all the goes with it) and really fell in love with math.

Anyway... to reiterate my answer to your question, yes I can find the values of many commonly used functions by hand. Unfortunately I am not very good at basic arithmetic. As I said I hated math for a long time so I never practiced basic math skills. I don't really blame this on my school, I chose to not put any effort in to it and I paying for it now. It's alright though I do math in my spare time and finding Pi to the 13 decimal place by using the arctan method gives you a real work out in basic arithmetic.

A kind of conclusion to this convoluted post is that if the kids want to learn they will try to find the resources to do so. It's truly sad when kids (and adults) who passionately want to learn something simply don't have access to the people or resources that would enable them to do so.
