  1. Re:wow on Phoenix Bios to Incorporate DRM · · Score: 2, Insightful

p3-700? Serial Number Disabled of course? I see no difference in DRM and the despised SN Intel chose to put in its procs.

  2. Re:Must be that new math.... on Light Bulb Replacements · · Score: 1

I agree with your interpretation of new math. And I am a LED supporter... but they have their downfalls.

LEDs are still not as efficient as the common Fluorescent Tube lamps. I do not know the efficiency of the smaller light bulb replacement fluorescents, but I do know that the shape of these small fluorescents are still not optimal.

If fluorescent lamps came in the proper form factor to fit fixtures made for incandescent lighting, in the traditional "bulb" shape, or in the various PAR shapes for recessed lighting, I think they would be better suited than LEDs for standard lighting applications.

LEDs are great for compactness and point brightness, but for mass quantities of light, fluorescents (or possibly compact HID)(or sulfer bulbs - what happened to them?) rule!

Oh, and the LED/fluorescent battle is muddied further, since most white LEDs are actually fluorescent, using a single color (usually blue) as a driver.

  3. Re:Of course on RIAA Now Targets Pirates' Parents · · Score: 2, Interesting

That's one thing I have not understood in the RIAA's rage against the listener... Why are they prosecuting those _sharing_ the music... Instead of those "stealing" the music.

Lets say ping pong balls are a very hot commodity, and i find a way to duplicate them below sale price (for free lets say). I decide to put all my ping pong balls on my front lawn for people to see. Besides the aesthetic disaster of a front lawn covered in ping pong balls, what crime is committed by me? Isn't the crime committed by those that take my ping pong balls? Why is prosecution not focused on people who download the music?

  4. Re:Remeber Ohm's law? on Those Amazing Antigravity Machines? · · Score: 1

12V from a a dry cell or 12V from a car battery are all the same. The internal resistance difference at the 30mA or so required to kill you wouldn't make the car battery any more lethal - the electricity still has to get through your skin, which provides the greatest resistance in the circuit.
Seriously, though, you've never touched both terminals of a car battery? Safe to a human, but able to weld lesser metals. Bwuahahahaaaa!

  5. Who mentioned Fusion? Matter=Energy on What if Energy was (Nearly) Free? · · Score: 1

Wow - my first slashdot post...
Anyway - you have "free" energy...lets just say you have LOTS of it. energy = mass with enough manipulation
so if you need a reaction mass, create the mass from energy, then use even more energy to eject that rearward.

e=mc^2 - kids know it, it's almost cliché, but have no idea what it means nowadays

I realize that it would take a TON of energy, and we dont have technology to do it en masse yet, but if we can have "free" energy, why not say that we can do energy-mass conversions easily too>?
