  1. Fallout/MadMax on On MMORPG Franchise Fundamentals · · Score: 1

To me, the obvious next MMO is based on either the Fallout series of single player RPGs, or the Mad Max movies: either way, a post apocalyptic desert-world where inhabitants must scrounge weapons and resources and survive in a harsh environment.

Closely related would be a massively multiplayer version of Car Wars/AutoDuel, in which the scenario is the same, but the gameplay focuses on your vehicle. Sort of like Eve Online translated to the wasteland.

Finally, Frank Herbert's Dune novels present a rich world of possibilities to draw on: players could be Fremen, Harkonen, or any of the other major houses, Bene Gesserit, Ixians, Bene Tleilax, or members of the Navigators Guild. Build a trading empire, or fight for control of the Spice. Preferably, the game creators would pretend that the Brian H./Kevin J. Anderson novels never existed. Ugh.

While the Slashdot community may have largely embraced the Mac platform since the release of the BSD/Mach based OS X, Mac != Linux.

Blizzard has had strong support for the Mac platform since its beginning; and it's nice to see that the Mac forms an integral part of their development process.

If you're at Joe's cafe, there's there's no need for Joe to use AirPwn. He already pwns the net connection you're connecting through (wirelessly). He can intercept & replace any packet he wants to anyway.

The point of AirPwn is intercepting wifi traffic on someone else's network; the uses of which are overwhelmingly malicious than benign, to my thinking. Exactly like Scenario 3. Or worse, detecting passwords, requests for secure connections to eBay, banks, etc.

My question to the crowd is, how effective would existing wireless encryption standards be at disabling AirPwn?

You could use an external USB wifi adapter with an iBook. There's a few Mac-compatible ones available.

$9 or so if the service provider has it in stock (which any should, but maintaining supplies of rarely-needed items can be expensive). $20 if they have to special order it from Apple.

"Duck head". Called that because it looks vaguely like a Disney(R) trademarked character when viewed at the right angle. If you squint. It's true it's not normally covered by warranty: they're very simple physical parts that would only normally break due to abuse by a user. If you can explain the nature of the failure to AppleCare support, and indicate you didn't mistreat the poor thing, they might send you a free one. Hope this helps. :-)

  7. Re:And the land of the free? on Tanker Truck Shut Down Via Satellite · · Score: 1
Operating a vehicle on public roads is a privilege, not a right. Requirements for vehicles including safety features such as seatbelts, crumple zones, etc. are all reasonable regulatory measures by government to act in the public interest.

The police already have the legal right & duty to stop a vehicle which they suspect is breaking the law. As it is now, they often have to risk their own & bystanders' lives in high-speed chases, use measures like the Pit maneuver, spike sticks, etc., which are time-consuming and increase the risk to everyone involved.

An automated shut-off system in every vehicle on the road (presumably with a relatively robust security/authentication mechanism) would put an end to many of the dangerous chases we see on TV all the time. Or imagine if your car gets stolen, you can simply call 911, give them your license plate number and private code, and have your car disabled until it's found.

I'm very wary of government intrusion, and overzealous law enforcement. But in the case of motor vehicles, your individual rights end where other people's safety becomes a concern. If you want to drive an unmodified vehicle on your own private roads, go ahead. But as soon as you enter the public road system, you agree to be bound by restrictions agreed to by all for the common interest.

Actually, that's a new 15"; the 17 is much wider.

On the right is a Photoshopped old 15 (note the two-tone case edge and black keyboard) to make it the size of a 12.
