  1. I have been doing this for years! on Recombinant DNA For The Home Hobbyist · · Score: 3

My research partner (read wife) and I have been recombining DNA in for years. We even did it in the kitchen once, however, the bedroom is more suited to our techniques. So far the results look promising, but I'll keep you posted if there are any changes.

  2. Not Just Cordless Phones on Beware Of 2.4 GHz Interference · · Score: 2

I saw a while back on Ars-Technica that some pagers and cell phones share the same freq as the master oscilator in AMD boards. When the pager went off, the computer would die! I think the guy fixed it by building a grounded box around the chip.

  3. The underground development model on Napster Wars · · Score: 1

I have not been a mamber of the linux community for very long. That being said, I have noticed that whenever a tool comes out that has the "potential" to be used in a subversive manner, it is quickly replaced/updated with a better idea.
Napster was cool. We all did a collective head-slap and thought, "Why didn't I think of that?" But, we took the idea and kicked it around, and decided that since we do not own/care to support a large central database, let's just make it distributed.
Napster may or may not have been conceived as a pirate tool. Thoes who know probably will never tell. Sure, you can use it legally, but that is not the issue.
We now have something better (read harder to kill/open/whatever). Napster may die. If it does, some of our freedoms will die with it. The point is the tea still needs to be dumped into the harbour. Let's make sure a tool is ready to continue the legacy.

  4. Re:Is this statement correct? on The Future of Computers · · Score: 1

I seem to remember the soviets tried to build a non-binary computer. I think it used three states, but it was so complex that it was never mass-produced. How is a quantium computer any different?

I really do not understand how the US can dictate how a non-US company can distribute it's product. I do not think MS will move, but, if they decided to do something just as drastic (like refusing to license to the US Government or even just closing up shop and going home) what could the gov do to them?

  7. Satalite routing and servers! on What Will The Internet Of The Future Be Like? · · Score: 1

I can see a movement to satalite systems for low-latency sites. The main server can be ground-based or even space-based (highly unlikely, but very benificial). The bird will communicate directly with several ground stations over the continent/hemisphere and the users will communicate with thoes. Eventually, everyone will have the ability to communicate directly with the birds via TDM/WDM.
The advantage to this is legal fredom. If someone tries to shut down your site, you just upload the offending material to the bird and link to it. Short of de-orbiting the bird, The Man cannot stop the transmission.
Of course, with the cost of a bird and upkeep, it might not be worth it.

  8. Let's Boycott! on Rick McCallum Answers "Why No Star Wars DVD?" · · Score: 2

    To all,

I have heard a lot of comments (on previous /. news) along the lines of a boycott on VHS SW:E1. While this might get the attention of the mainstream, I just do not belive it will get us what we want. SW is all about hype. The movies (VHS) will sell like hotcakes. George will make additional millions, and we will be SWless. If the guy can take the time to produce a VHS version, he can certianly burn it to disk. The "Special Features" box (you know the one I'm talking about) will read:

    Dolby 5.1
    Spanish Subtitles
    Chapter Selection

I for one will buy the VHS version ASAP. I will then buy the DVD version IF it has enough special features to justify the purchace. If it does not, I will wait till VHS is obsolete before I get the DVD.

Thoes of you who will boycott want it on DVD now. But, would it be worse to buy the VHS now and then a Directors Cut DVD in a few years, or buy the DVD now and then buy the Directors Cut DVD AGIAN in a few years.

Do we really need another desktop? Something like this may be of use to the author(s) and a small group of his/her/their friends/users, but is this where we want to be going as a community? I have no problems with extending the functionality of the current desktops (or anything for that matter). But we need to realise that our tallents would be better focoused on making the existing generation better rather than just taking our cool ideas and starting another project.

  13. It's Gotta Happen! on WTO Puts Internet Taxes on Hold · · Score: 1

If you buy something from a retailer at your local general store, you pay a tax. If you place a telephone order to a company based in your state, you pay a tax. Interstate commerce is tax free AFAIK. International commerce (both E-based and otherwise) is regulated via tarrifs imposed by customs.

Why should the internet be any different? We need to realize that internet commerce is killing local retailers. If those retailers go, we loose the tax base they generated (read downtown improvements). E-Commerce is good for the consumer, but bad for the community.

We should not be trying to eleminate E-Tax. We should work to make sure that the tax is FAIR and the money goes to improve the internet as a whole (maybe into r&d or local bandwidth increaces?).

As to the question of who could impose the tax, I do not think the WTO or the federal government could do that. If the fed govmt could tax interstate commerce, they would have done so already; and the WTO cannot impose any regulations in-country (they could lobby our politicians to do so).

  14. Sad But True! on What to do when your Domain is Threatened? · · Score: 1

Each and every case must be taken aside and examined individually, but this sounds like trademark infringement. You are using their name without their knowledge or consent. Maybe, if you ask nicely, they will reimburse you for the expense of registering the domain.
Personally, I think it was a bad call on your part to use the school's name to promote your site. Hits should be based on content, advertising, or word of mouth, not a popular name.
