I've been a Windows person for too many years to count. I've tried Linux distributions on occasion, but always ended up frustrated with compatibility issues. Also, my job has always been MS related and I've stuck with Windows XP. Frankly, I hate it so I'm asking for some help. I tried Vista and think it is a pile of shit.
I need to be productive and need to run this stuff on whatever OS I switch to. Eventually it might be Apple/OSX, but for now I can not afford a new box.
- Standard Fare, Browser, email, etc. (got that covered with Linux or OSX)
- Quicken 2008.
- Excel
- Visual Studio 2005 (Mostly.NET 2.0/ASPX/C#) (I know I can not convince my employer to switch, so I have to be able to develop for it).
Is this even possible? Can tools like VS or the express editions be run under Linux using something like Wine?
Please let me know if this stuff is even possible. I so want to switch.
No, I'm stating that you could postulate just about any reality, but I do not mean there is no purpose to it.
That doesn't mean you should not recognize the reality around you and accept it the way it is. Trying to warp observable reality like this bunch is doing is just, wrong. What I get tired of are the absolute arguments that so many tend to proffer. There are no absolutes, only the best observations and scientifically tested theories that we can base our reality on. Hard for most people to grasp since they need to believe their reality is the only absolute reality (faith).
Same as the "tastes great, less filling" argument. No winners, but a lot of pissed off people who are unable to see that lite beer is crap in the first place.
This is total crap. But, if you really think about it, who's to say the universe and all that is in it was not created the moment before you read this post? It is faith either way, and impossible to prove completely. No one thinks like this anymore, always it has to be absolutes. And if God does exist, why not believe in Evolution as it fits with our observations about the world around us? Seems silly not to.
Learn everything you can about how to save, invest and optimize the money you do have. This is a skill which is very similar to the optimizing you do in software to create the best overall design. No matter what career you end up in, having the ability to understand the best ways to invest will supplement and someday replace your current career. Learn economics and how markets work. Learn about real-estate, learn about stocks and bonds, learn about options or commodities. Learn how to manage risk.
Once you have a good handle on your own finances, branch out and help others organize theirs. You would be amazed at how many people can make 100k a year, spend 110k, and have very little to show for it.
One thing left out of the article is the static nature of most content in MMORPGs. Once you get your sword of uberness, you start to look around and everyone else has the same stuff, so what fun is that? A little more randomness and chance in quality and uniqueness of items would make a nice difference.
Also, why is it when I loot a humanoid mob that was carrying an axe and wearing leather armor I get a sword or some other non-related crappy item? There is a total disconnect between what you hunt and what you get itemwise that just seems silly.
WoW is the same thing, which is one reason why I quit after level 60 and getting my epic mount. I'm just like every other cookie-cutter template with the same armor, same sword, same items, and nothing to do.
Seems silly to me when you consider even human language has changed so much in the past 100-200 years. Just think what it will look like in 100+ years.
If you take any novel or movie today, aren't they just rewritten rehashes of plots that have existed for the past 1000+ years?
Important software, like important ideas will be maintained, migrated, changed, morphed and improved upon. The really bad ideas will hopefully decay out of existence.
Really, who the &$^% cares what was in our Oracle DB 100 years from now?

Since I made money years ago when I bought and sold Enron stock not knowing that it was a criminal enterprise, does that make me a criminal?

I read Kerry's quote. "My administration would never utilize biased advice..." About fell out of my chair laughing at that one.
What I find a more interesting story is the reaction of a large percentage of the Slashdot readers.
Faced with a real possibility that these documents are indeed fakes, they grasp at almost anything to believe they are not.
That I find very frightening on either side.
