You are half correct. You are forgetting that a significant percentage of crime is not significantly pre-meditated (i.e snatch and grabs). Camera's MAY have some effectiveness reducing these crimes of opportunity.
So we have established that you:
a) Have an interest in modern classical. Well done. So do I. I love Benjamin Britten and I perform it. I take from your simplistic arguments that you believe that because the distribution of income isn't perfect in the music industry it gives credibility to your ridiculous argument that pirated versions of music are cheaper and therefore you are morally allowed to download performances that are pirated and not pay one cent to the 'performers'.
b)You have a CD collection that you purchased legally...... Well done. Here's a cookie. When I speed through the next red light I can rest assured that for the last 8 red lights I stopped; so on the balance surely I have done nothing wrong.
Oh please. It's rare I voice any support for the major record labels' especially given their recent behavior. However in one short paragraph you have nakedly displayed your willingness to deprive artists of any compensation AT ALL for their efforts and dressed it up with some quasi-free market bullshit argument about offering a better product! Well here's a newsflash, pirated content will always be cheaper.
If your going to copy 'mere audio files' from artists without offering any monetary recompense, fine. But at least be honest about what you are doing. A file's format doesn't abrogate you from all ethical responsibility and it certainly doesn't change what you are doing.
FLAC you and your convenient ethics.
PS: I loathe the music publishers..it's worth repeating.
Wired is tech journalism's equivalent of the wild-eyed leering boy at the high school dance who wanted a dance with ALL the popular girls.....
Nothing against collaborative user-driven journalism but honestly....Wired is the publication that thought barcode readers were the next big thing for electronic publication. They should stop whoring themselves with ideas and start thinking about what the publication's longer term tenets and principles are. Much like the Economist.
Bandwagons will get you to next town....overriding principles however will take you (and your loyal readers) where you want to go.
I am drunk so that's it for me:)
personally, I'd prefer they be seperate -- but that's me. It's kind of difficult to use your phone while using your iPod, isn't it?
You're right it is. That's why as an ipod owner I still recently upgraded my mobile to one that also has MP3 playback and a 2MP cam. When I am listening to a song and a call comes in it switches automatically. WHen the phone call is finished the song resumes where it left. Simple. Effective.
The iPod was successful because the design and interface was clean and "sexy". Do you think that by adding phone, camera, and whatever other capabilities to the device that they will be able to keep it "clean and sexy"? I don't.
Then you have obviously never used an Apple computer before. Their computers do everything every other PC does (which is a LOT more than a mobile) but with a "clean and sexy" interface. You are selling interface designers short. A good UI can handle complex functionality in an intuitive and easy to use manner.
The real issue with convergence that turns people off is having to sacrifice functionality of one feature to gain another. But technology IS improving and soon the need to make this sacrifice with mobile phones will disappear. You WILL soon have a device soon that can take 12MP photos of a worthy quality, play 12GB of music to keep ANY music lover happy for hours and still make a phone call. It is inevitable and I am sure Apple see that. Watch this space, they are not about to let this future market slip away from them....
These guys should be rewarded not punished. IMO they are performing a service letting everyone know of a flaw they discovered, and providing incentive to correct the flaw.
Please explain to me how they are providing a service when they create a virus that destroys all picture files on a graphic designer's computer and puts them out of work?
You are sadly naive. If these people were what you think they are, more virus' payloads would merely patch up the flaws they found rather than open ports for spammers and opportunists.
No. Someone who works as a system administrator and who has already taken the precaution to disallow scripts/executables through his mail server is merely fed up with the 'test' and 'hi' emails clogging up his server! Not to mention the mail undeliverable messages.
You don't have to be a victim of this to be p*55ed off!
FYI. Looks like the Star Wars Kid didn't get into Episode 3. It was announced on the radio today that principal photography on the film has finished at Fox Studios here in Sydney.
The one pattern I see is that the overwhelming number of the artists seem to be those that appeal to under 25's. Obviously the RIAA have decided to go for those who can least afford to offer legal resistance (school kids and college students).
Come on RIAA, dare you to pick on us Lou Reed fans!

Traded in my 'Zalman Reserator 1+' for a 'PSU of Arctic Chill +4' last week to an elven mage.
Never looked back....

That way we can all enjoy zooming into Martian highrises looking for a glimpse of green nekkid Martian bootie!!

I assume that's air freight.
