So how would this differ from the way clothing designers operate? Clothing designers seem to put out loads of crap at the beginning of their season, which is immediately and cheaply copied by knock-offs and Wal-Mart clothing purveyors.
But somehow, the clothiers always seem to make a profit, even with cheap imitations coming out almost immediately.
Usually, I notice that/. has the headlines quite awhile after Google News.
Which makes sense, considering that/. is just linking to other news sources. I've only been reading for about a year, but I don't recall ever seeing 'breaking' news on/.
It's not really about how inefficient our automobiles are. It's really about how inefficient the damned plants are at making fuel. There's the tragedy in this !
How about:
I can scan my network and make sure my machines aren't advertising open holes that shouldn't be there.
(Sure, I should install all of the patches, but what if I made a mistake? Then I should try to check my work by making sure nothing is awry. Like looking out the door when you hear a noise, to make sure no one is about to break in.)
That should have been modded up "Funny".
You're trying to send someone e-mail and it was refused because they use SPEWS?
Then they don't want your mail.
Quit whining about it.
What seems to be lost in all of this discussion about whether SPEWS is a reasonable thing to use or not is that it is up to the mail administrator (and whomever employs the mail administrator) to use it.
Are you on SPEWS and upset about it? Can't get your mail to that all-important recipient whose mail administrator blocks based on SPEWS?
Instead of complaining to your upstream providers to try to get your measly little IP off of SPEWS, complain to the mail administrator's boss, to get them to stop using SPEWS. If that does you no good, then you have to accept that your intended recipient doesn't want your e-mail, and quit whinging.

That's funny, I thought hackers were those guys at MIT who rolled young Mr. Smoot across that bridge...
Just out of curiosity, what is the other $40 a month for?
The source you cited:
Google has around US$700-million in annual revenues, and it makes about US$100-million a year in profits. Google is growing better than 20% every 12.
If that's correct, then Google is worth a lot more than $1 billion. Nitpick: And this is finance, not economics.
But yeah, that Buffet guy not only picks great stocks, he makes a mean marguerita.
Ay, carumba !
That is a very large CC. But that doesn't make VT a small school.
Ummmmm...
25,000 students is a small school?
Hokie, hokie, hokie, high !

I think he meant "euphemism".
