  1. I miss my Ford Probe on Hybrid Cars Don't Live Up to Mileage Claims · · Score: 1

Blame this on OCD. But I always fill up at the gas tank and always reset my trip odometer. So I have a good idea what kind of gas mileage Im getting. My little old '96 Ford Probe that I had(the tiny 4 cyl one), was getting 34mpg. It kind of blows my mind that my I was getting better mileage then a hybrid. The past two vehicles I bought both got within 90% of the MPG listed on the sticker. It sounds like I was in the minority. With gas prices the way they are now, I sure miss that Ford Probe. Though it is fun to drive a big honkin SUV with a bumper sticker that says "Global Warmer" and see the outrage on some of the people around me driving!

  5. Math and programming on Math And The Computer Science Major · · Score: 1

My degree is computer science and engineering. The cs part has a lot of discrete mathematics and linear algebra, which IMO are very useful to programming. The engineering part took me up to differential equations in calculus. I can probably count on one hand the number of times Ive used the advanced calculus in my professional career. The positive thing about that, is that the engineering has opened up doors that normally would not have been there with just a CS degree. I landed a 2 year contract in a manufacturing plant designing algorithms for optimally shaping bottles. You'd be surprised at the amount of math that goes into shaping a beer bottle!

  10. I'd hate to be a programmer coming out of college on Reasonable Salary for Entry Level Programmers? · · Score: 1

I graduated in 1996 and started at $15/hour in Ohio. It's very, very cheap to live here. We just recently hired some entry level programmers and the range was about $20-$25(was really a salary position) doing standard MS desktop and web apps. We ended up hiring the guy in at $48k/year with 2 weeks vacation and full benefits. At least in our area things are picking up and demand is again outweighing the supply of programmers here. It's hard for a lot of the entry and low level guys to compete though because there are still a lot of experienced programmers out there out of work.

Kudo's for them for thinking of ways to thwart terrorism, but they seem a little bit arrogant in their assumptions.
