Where things were kept was probably my biggest issue when I first started to. If you want you can check here for more information on where everything is kept. It's long and dry, but you'll learn a lot. There is also this which is the migration guide the Germans paid for. If you ever just need a question answered and can't find anyone, feel free to send me a message through here. Again, good luck and have fun.:)
Congrats!:) Welcome to the community. Yes, it can be confusing, but it can be done. I imagine the confusion probably arises from the differences between OSes and possibly from the assumptions made by the people writing the Docs. But, gentoo has some of the best documentation there is. And certainly the best community. The people on irc.freenode.org in the #gentoo channel cannot be beat. They are friendly and helpful. I don't think I've ever seen anyone there say RTFM. Maybe a suggestion to check google for something, but that's not the same thing. And if you don't understand what google said about it, you can ask them and they are happy to answer.
Hmmm... now that is an interesting idea. I'll have to think about it. It is within my business area. I didn't find Gentoo's docs to be confusing... but then again I'm already a Linux user. Knoppix is really nice.:)
I would like to think that Joe-PVR user can read. That being the case, they can install gentoo. I used to think it was too much of a pain and not worth the time, and I'm a 6 year Linux user. Then I went to the website and followed along. Yeah, that was hard. So much harder than the last time I installed Windows. Yep, don't know how I, or the total newbies I've talked to, made it. Damn. What a world.
As a side note, maybe I'm nuts, but it really annoys the hell out of me the people that seem to assume that "Joe User" can't figure anything out for themselves and needs their wittle hand held for every little thing. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you may not be in that category. But, a large number of people around here and in this industry seem to think that way and it's really insulting.
Which of course is what would really be done. On the other hand, a MythTV livecd isn't a bad idea at all. In fact I'd be surprised if someone out there didn't already have one or is working on one. A google search was inconclusive.
Just checked, does all the dependency work for you in one command. Myself, it just means that I'll buy my second Tivo before the change over or just buy older ones and disable auto update for the software. At least until they make it so you can't do that anyway.
Funny, I'm surprised that anyone is still replying to this:)
In the example you give, yes a $50.00 increase in taxes that saved $100.00 in health insurance costs (provided those savings weren't provided in some nefarious way) would be a good thing. Who wouldn't think that? But, how often does it go that way?
As you point out, not often. You are correct, I do general think that taxes are a bad thing, or at best a necessary evil. Most government services can, and in my thinking, should be provided by private industry. They simply do it better.
However, if we are going to have taxes I agree with you that I would rather them be spent in far more efficient ways and for things that have real benefits to those paying those taxes.
I also would love it if we could opt-out of certain programs and as such not have to pay for them. Social Security being at the top of that list. Yes, we would loose the benefit of that program. That of course is fair and logical since we'd no longer be paying for it. But, what could you do with the nearly $300/month that comes out for those kinds of programs? That's a pretty good start on some real retirement plans in my book.
Ahhh... I see... so without the great governement to take care of us we are destined to be poor and for civilization to fall. Damn, what would we do without all those governemnt programs. I guess we would have to work or something equally strange.
Would it be correct to say that you're one of the people who would favor 70% and higher taxes on the "rich"?
All you said is of course true, I'm just wondering why anyone would go to the trouble? I'm thinking really the only use for such a thing is if you're booting off knoppix or something like that. Or you need some storage "out there".
But, in both of those cases it would be far better to hook up with one of the many cheap webhosts offering multiple gigs of space out there and use that instead.
My MX700 has never failed me yet. However, the non-rechargable one at work has failed and you're right it's annoying. I think the rank, for lack of better word, of mouse has alot to do with it.
That's what I was thinking. I'm fine, to a point, if they want to block third party notifiers if it's for reasons like network usage as was suggested by someone else. However, if they still haven't released a notifier for Linux I don't see how anyone using Linux has any choice.
To me it's the same thing as with the IM clients. MSN, Yahoo, and AOL either has no Linux client (MSN) or their client is a POS compared to the free third-party ones. As such to me it's worse if they block third party clients and it damages the logic that it's their network.
It's not like people are turning away from the "official" clients simply because there are third party ones. They are turning away because the third party ones are superior.
Taxes is one thing, taxes which are way too high are another. Since the largest chunk of those taxes are used to provide government social services in the made up role of the government "taking care" of you. I don't seem to recall the "taking care" of you clause in the Constitution. And no, "provide for the general welfare" isn't it.
Roads, highways, and even the police and fire departments are services it can be argued is within the scope of proper govenment. However, serveral billion dollars a year taking care of people who won't get a job, or allowing large coporations get off scott free on taxes isn't my idea of a good use of tax payer money.
As another person who replied to me said, I'll be voting for change.
Damn, and I was going to use mod points on this topic. Oh well...
I make around 55K a year (USD) and consider myself very fortunate. However, I'm more than a little tired of watching a huge chunk of my work, IE my money, vaporize in taxes each month.
I didn't always make this money and even though I knew taxes were high when you got to this point, it's still a shock to be loosing 19,000/year in taxes.
Raise taxes? I can't believe people put up with taxes as high as they are!!
I suppose if the user is in the wheel group, and the sudoers file is configured to let wheel users run things in sudo without a password, and inside of the script it was something to the effect of:
sudo bunchofnastystuff -0wnme now
Then yes, it could be done.
It could also be done if a person, trying to make things "easier" on the users, changed permissions in the/etc directory to 777 (or some other God forsaken set).
That's what I could come up with rather shortly without having to fall back to buffer-overflows in root access programs and the like. But, there shouldn't be that many, if any, of those on a normal system.
Yes, it would mean increased freedom for those who use the code. I don't think anyone can deny that. However, it also would be an open invitation from $BADGUYCORP to come along and do nothing more than repackage the kernel and sell it giving nothing back to the people who made it in the first place.
I hate using such strong terms, but I think others were right when they said the BSD license is an invitation to get your code raped and used, and not in a good way. I'm glad that others feel it is a good license for them, to each his own and all, but not for the Linux kernel.
I am not a programer, but if I were and I was going to release my program under a OSS license, there is no way I would use the BSD license just so some one else can come along and swipe the software, rename it, and make a fortune while giving nothing, no code, no money back.
What part of "well regulated" is so hard to understand?
I don't normally reply to sigs but I've seen this one a number of places and just had to reply to day... What part of "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." is so hard to understand?
What part of the amendment makes you think that is is unique among the Bill of Rights in that it refers to a right of the "people", collectively, unlike all the others that refer to individual rights? I really curious so please respond.

I wish you good luck in your Linux experience. :)

Screw that. Give me HOSHI :)

This is a neat hack, nothing more.

MX700. End Debate. :)

/me looks around for his flamebait mod.... :)

These things do happen from time to time...
I'll take an invite ;) heheheh

Sorry for the off topic post.
And don't forget, the people selling those copies are in business. They aren't doing it to be leet or because it's cool.
They were still there in 2001 when i was there. Can't wait to go back. Not so much for the Golden Arcade, but just to be in HK again. :)
