IMHO, this is not about legit copy but about storage. The library must have a unique kind of storage format for digital content. With protected content, with SO many standards, they might need to adapt theit searching/viewing/indexing tools.
As new copy-protection standards emerge everyday (and I don't know if they are all available as a SDK to interface with another program) and as I think the library to not want to hire fulltime developpers to integrate every single API (if it exists and can be integrated - think about concurrent access, etc...), they must have thought is was easier to store everything in a clear format and get rid of the protection.
You live in a democracy, right? Right?
I won't call USA a democraty : more a lobbycraty.
AWx - I'm europeen, I am scared when I see more and more lobbies appearing on this side of the pond.
Why do you feel the need to translate 1 meter to its equivalent in feet, inches, fly wing ?
The metric system is official just anywhere, can't you just give up you old system to switch to the new one ?
It's like here in EU where everyhting is labelled in Euro AND in the old currency : if you still provide the old info, no one will ever switch...

I don't really agree.
Patents are originally for the following purpose : public domain.
You have a process. If you describe exactly how to perform (and repeat) it (in a patent filing), then US grant you exclusive use for a specific amount of time. So you can make money while global knownledge increase.
Many companies do not patent some part of their technology because once it's filed, anyone can see it (like PS3 architecture guessed from Sony 'Cell Processing' patent, or NVidia GeForceFX architecture reversed engineered from their 'CineFX' patent).

Latin as lived longer (and is still living in studies and books) than any other language.
I think you would suggest english... but in a few years/decades, it might have disappeared being spanglish or something else.

PS : latin does not evolve anymore
PPS : latin is based on logic and not usage : so it is much easier to decodef for 'aliens'.

But P4-64 are just a copy/paste from AMD64 architecture ... and are said to run very poorly AMD64 code.
