I think that one of the points of a project like kylix (delphi) is the fact that the components used in it are not fixed. I could see that they could have a seperate set of components based on gtk+. If this is the case you could realistilcy create a program and easily change it from kde to gnome without allot of hassle. One of the major features of delphi was its ability to "hide" the underlying windows complexity and wrapp it so the programmer did not need to know the specifics to make a good program. Since this concept did not keep the programmer from doing specific programming to the underlying system it removed the limitations that could be run into with this type of system. Overall it has been a very good design.

Opening Kylix sounds like a good idea, but to me it is worth the money to keep it developed and advancing. We would all like things to be free, but the team creating this tool I've been drooling for since hearing about it needs $$$. Although I am sure there are ways of making money off of open source products, borland isn't one of those.

Also I would be concerned for the overall compatablility of the product. I've been using delphi for 5 years now and love it. Kylix is something I've been looking foward to. I want to develop in linux but really don't have the time to learn all the lower level items in linux. I also am not the biggest C fan. (Note that I have nothing against C/C++, I just prefer pascal) This is a way for me and many other programmers to create more software for linux. Adding support for gnome is a good Idea and will be curious how they actually implement it.

Overall I see Kylix as a good thing for linux, whether I pay for it or not.

Why is everyone assuming they are guilty. They don't even know at the moment. So now they spend resources on this that they will not be compensated for. While we are assuming lets assume they are all legitimate, now they are out the cost of the it resources allocated to it and they have quite a few users who were less productive since they didn't get their new machines they needed. I work for a small consulting company and all the programming, almost always, is done at the client site. So out of the couple machines and the laptop my boss uses there are not that many machines.

The thing that scares me most about this is that if we let them come in, which at the moment is the last option on the list. what else will they see? As far as windows goes the machines there were preloaded with winblows and are completely leagal, but what if they see the large mass of mp3's on the machines? Or what type of other info will they be looking for while they are there. I suspect they would look for employee and client information to make sure they don't miss anyone.

I guess all the leagal battles with the govt has cause bill to feel his profits are not as high as he wants and figures he can rake more money in this way.

Our options at this moment are:
    1) have our lawyer send a "go screw yourself" letter to M$'s hit squad.
    2) put linux on all the machines, and let them come in (this is my favorite)
    3) see if we can find more companies in the area and start a class action suit against them.
