The only thing I can imagine at this point is a scenario like this:
Underling: This just keeps getting more ridiculous every minute! We never had a chance in the first place because everybody KNOWS this lawsuit is mindless blather. But every time you open your mouth, you make an even bolder accusation! What were you THINKING?!
McBride: By Jove, you're right! This lawsuit is going nowhere as long as I piddle around with puny little accusations and $3 billion damages. I'm going to announce a $3 trillion dollar suit. I know, I know--it's still not very much. But it will give them a small idea of just who they're dealing with before we crush them like the gnats that they are. I like my victims scared before they die!
Underling (rolling eyes): Go get 'em, sir. You've really got them on the run now. I'll just clean out my desk and go home now, if you don't mind. I've got some...uh...vacation time to take. Yeah, that's it.
McBride: Don't like the sight of blood, eh? Well, don't worry about it--I'll fill you in on all the gory details once we've won!
Might not be a bad idea. The fishermen of Nova Scotia could stand to be freed. Their jobs were all sacrificed to Japan in deference to the scumbags at the United Nations.

Welfare (n.) -- A jobs program for those who are unemployable in the private sector: government employees.
Art Tatum was a ground-breaking pianist in the 1st half of the 20th century. His harmonic inventiveness and astonishing technique are impressive; but they become even more so when you realize how long ago the recordings were made. Way ahead of his time.
Also, pick up some stuff by Marcus Roberts. His reinterpretation of Rhapsody in Blue blows me away every time I hear it. His use of the piano to its full potential is Liszt-like.

The best thing would be to for the government to let American go under
Yep. A real free market would solve the problems, as with most everything else. But the longer the government props up ailing companies, the more difficult it gets to pull the plug later. The collateral damage risk to the economy just keeps growing.
I think it's already too late though. The loss of jobs would probably be enough to drive the market back down again. But then, most of the things that are better in the long term are completely unacceptable to a majority of voters. Which is why I cringe whenever someone talks about moving us even further along toward Democracy.
Yes, I do think they'd hand over power. The real question is, do you think anything would really change? The harsh fact about power is that those who would not abuse it do not want it, and those that seek it tend to abuse it.
That's actually true. But there's another fact about power that's even more insidious: things are the way they are because the majority are happy with it. I know it's hard for a lot of Slashdot-types to accept because they can't blame Microsoft for it.
Government protects outdated or corrupt businesses because people don't want to lose their jobs, see the economy in trouble, or lose their cushy lifestyle. Government interferes in our lives because enough people don't want anyone to die, become sick, be hurt, be annoyed, be offended, or ever be in any state except raging euphoria without negative consequence.
If in the next election we all voted for the liberterians or the greens, do you really think they would hand over power?
Sure. But no third party will ever win because the voters don't care. Your're properly jaded (congrats). You're just jaded about the wrong people, that's all.
I think your a wee bit to drunk on the ideals they drugged you with in "history" class.
I don't drink and I don't do drugs...they're bad, mmmmkay? I just know where the blame and the responsibility actually lies.
If they had let me type in school instead of handwriting, I wouldn't have developed tendonitis in my elbow and wrist. Because no matter what the ding-dong master penman says, they never DID teach anybody how to hold a pencil correctly.
My teachers never knew how to hold a pencil correctly themselves; they always came by my desk and said, "Very nice!" Only years later did I realize that my writing technique was the primary cause for the extreme pain in my wrist.
...what with their embrafeable stronlholds and their vertilde suvereniteettis and their ruimnaalden orrella nnthayers. The Welsh are the single greatest threat to human language and they MUST be stopped before it's too late! Heed my warning or the human race will be doomed to saying LLANFAIR for all eternity!
Have you guys ever considered making Fire portable between OS X and GNUstep platforms, like GNUMail.app? I'm sure you'd get cooperation from the GNUstep folks to reduce the effort required on your part.
The fatal flaw is that the Constitution counted on a watchful populace that cared more about what their government was doing than on who was going to win American Idol and The Bachelorette. Or how much beer they had in the fridge. Or if they were getting enough sex. Pleasure is the real American idol.
Gentoo and CVS. But let's not forget Quake. 56k'ers on a Quake or RtCW server are getting rarer and rarer these days. It's pretty much impossible to compete at all if you don't have DSL or Cable.
Not completely unprecedented since NeXT ported the OS to Intel 10 years ago and application providers used fat binaries (which totally rocked). Of course, there weren't anywhere near as many NeXT apps as there are Mac apps.
Heh-heh. OK, well then HE needs to work on his communication skills.:-)
Seriously, what he said sounds exactly like something nobody would really say to represent their own opinion. It just sounded contrived to me. Perhaps if he hadn't used the word, "innovation"....

I seem to recall hearing that the Euro was doing poorly. But it's been a while since I heard anything about it at all. Say, does Britain still use pounds or did they go with the Euro? Someone told me the other day that they hadn't adopted Euro currency but I was fairly certain that they had.
I have a personal distaste for it because I've been accused of being an Astroturfer
I'm not surprised. And didn't you ever consider that there might be a reason? What you said came across as *distinctly* rabid.
You said that someone who doesn't want anything to do with Palladium is a "Luddite" and that they should "try to embrace inovation rather than hide from it" sounds like wild-eyed fanaticism (whether genuine or paid for by Microsoft).
There's nothing ad hominem about it--you simply can't communicate effectively. Or you really are a nut, a troll, or an Astroturfer.
why are you low Slashdot-number types so quick to trot out the Astroturf accusation?
What does a number have to do with anything?
I was going to respond to the parent and say that instead of reminding me of someone who didn't want a car in favor of a horse, this reminded me of someone who didn't want a car because the trolly tracks were being ripped out, and warned that if we took away the trollies we'd have to pay a thousand times more to get them back in the form of "The Metro" which wouldn't go half the places that trollies used to go.
Huh?
You could have done that too, but instead you went for the cheap, baseless, Astroturf accusation.
I'm sorry but using the word "innovation" in reference to another Microsoft attempt to monopolize will earn you an accusation of being a shill. And calling people on Slashdot Luddites is kind of silly in any context but especially so when talking about people who simply don't want it to be illegal to be a computer and electronics hobbiest.
Funny, for a while there I thought slashdot was trying to be better than just another news site.
Why would you think that? I don't recall anyone ever saying it. And there's never been any evidence of it being better. It's different, in that it covers tech stories rather than the Laci Peterson case (ugh, I'm so sick of that story), but I don't think it was ever intended to be journalistic.
That would be a fair trade. If we got rid of copyright tomorrow (or even returned to a reasonable copyright) I'd gladly give up GPL.
You should have sent the offending material back to the studio and requested a refund for the part you didn't want. :-)

Hey, doesn't that sound like a great idea for a reality TV show?
