You might want to take another look at that high res photo. Yes, it is bigger, but the "triangularness" of the stars is still apparent. My guess is that it has some sort of active focusing mirror that needs calibration.

  9. Re:Nyquist would giggle at the ripple charts. on Five Power Supplies Compared · · Score: 1

I would expect to see very little noise from 60Hz harmonics. As far as I know, all PC power supplies are switchers, not the old linear regulators. Otherwise, the supplies would require huge transformers, and be very inefficient.

And the faster a switcher switches, the smaller a coil it needs, and the more efficient it is. High frequency noise on the outputs is the norm.

  10. Line regulation is important, too on Five Power Supplies Compared · · Score: 4, Interesting

I just scanned the article, but I saw no mention of testing for line regulation. Maybe I'm just old school, but that used to be an important factor. Oh yeah, just thought of another one. Home users might be interested in knowing just how much noise that power supply is injecting back into your mains voltage. Switching power supplies are noisy little beasts.

  12. Kalman to the rescue! on There Is No Single Instant In Time · · Score: 1

Anyone who's built a simple Kalman filter knows that we've had the tools to deal with uncertainty of an object's position for years. Only, engineers don't usually call it that, rather we refer to uncertainty as "noise". Great stuff, just one more thing to feel smug about.

The reason its so cold there is because what sunlight hits does so at an extreme angle. But that's what adjustable mirrors are for, to reflect the light at extreme angles. Admittedly though, the six months of darkness does present a minor technical problem.
