  1. Why is this front page news? on Is Showmypc.com an Open Source Pretender? · · Score: 3, Insightful

This is flame bait... this is not news and it's definately not the proper way to report a GPL violation. Are we really hurting for news submissions?

It's a little early to jump the gun that this will ruin Speakeasy... yah yah we all saw what "happened" with Geeksquad but it was garbage to begin with. Speakeasy is a good company and with it running as an independent operation it should be fine.

  3. Rant is about right... on Linux, to be (Like Microsoft) or Not to be? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm getting sick and tired of hearing about how Linux is so much better than Windows. I'm a Linux guy... I run Linux on 90% of my servers I have a Linux desktop but it's all about personal preference people. Linux is not better than Windows for a lot of people... if it were there would be more people using it. It's not about one OS being better than the other, its about what the users want and right now they want Windows.

If Linux gets to the point where it's better you wont see rants of this nature... you'll see rants like you see on Slashdot daily about how "crappy" it is or how "bloated it is". The flavor of the day is the one that gets hit the hardest and right now like it or not Windows is the flavor of the day.

While Mr. Petreley has some points which could be considered worthwhile reading they are encapsulated in his fanboi rant thus losing any and all credit they might have gotten.

Really I find this to be just downright wrong.

Big picture view, I do believe Microsoft to be a monopoly. I do believe there needs to be some sort of repercussion for it but I think anyone asking them to give up THEIR intellectual property that they have developed is just proving their point... they are the best.

I sit back and watch daily as Microsoft is flamed here on slashdot, I've been around a while, and I don't comment much but there are certain things that push my buttons. Microsoft is not the devil, they do not stifle innovation and the people and organizations who claim they do are either on the loosing end or are just tyring to get a piece of the pie for themselves.

If someone out there was better than Microsoft, we would see that.... look at Firefox... it works WONDERFULLY on Windows XP, and its what I use. I also have a bunch of Linux web servers but in the end I think the people asking Microsoft to "open up Windows" are just admitting defeat.

Rather than worry about "opening up Windows, or decoupling IE from Windows" isn't it time that people start innovating and competing with Microsoft?

Intel is not dead, nore will they ever be.

When it comes to large corporations, buying large scale servers they ONLY BUY INTEL. Intel has the coorporate market monopolized and will continue to. AMD is JUST NOW breaking into the Multiple CPU market, and it takes some time to optimize that.

That said, I am an AMD fan. I own a P4 1.7 and an AMD 1.3... I love both machines, they both are faster than I will ever need. Theres no reason to say that AMD will kill intel because the cold hard facts are that they not only wont, but they cant. Intel is in other markets, not just CPUS.

  9. Efnet on EFNet on the Rocks Again · · Score: 5

I usually refrain from posting opinions but I feel on this one I must.

EFNet has been my sole IRC network for years now, its plagued by many things that draw the wrong crowds. However this doesnt make it a bad place, its just not one where you can go telling off some 13 year old that has as they say "500 b0x3n". I dont understand the mentality of attacking a non-profit irc network for any reason.

You lost your channel? So what, go make a new one.
You lost your nick? So what use a deviation.
They wont let you be an oper? So what start your own network.

I mean come on.. this is rediculous.. So what if your upset with efnet, there are so many other alternatives out there that you cant begin to list them. Use one of them.

As far as the attack that efnet is facing, its not just the DDoS, its also the attack of its users. Just like this post on slashdot about efnet... "but I find myself wondering if the oldest IRC network can pull out of this type of situation a second time?" If youve used a network for 5 plus years, and its been through this before, then odds are it will make it though it again, dont show a lack of faith or support like that. You are giving this kids or immature adults exactly what they want. The truth is this, we are giving them exactly what they want, thus they wont quit. If we quit complaining, then what they are doing isnt working any more, or they are not going to get their desired results, thus they will probably quit attacking efnet.

One of the most redundant things you will see on the efnet.org forums is the posts regarding the problems efnet is facing where people are whining and complaining about not being able to get on efnet. Instead of that, shut up and move on. So what if you cant get on efnet for a few days, its not like theres not 100 other irc networks that you can use until EFNet gets back up, heck have your buddy on a cable modem load up ircd to support your friends until efnet is back online.

In short, stop making a big deal out of it. In the end your forgetting the people who are really suffering and whining about stuff that dont matter, imagine how much these attacks are costing the hosts of the servers we love, they are doing this for free, and paying out the rear end to keep this thing going. Thats where we come to the poing of loosing efnet, is when it hits the sponsors (servers) in the pocket.

  12. Why do people do this..? on Red Hat Rivalries at Salon · · Score: 3

Lets just get down to the facts of the Everyone vs. RedHat. When it comes down to it RedHat is the driving force of the linux world. Im not at all taking anything away from any distrobutions out there, in fact I use Slackware, but if it wasnt for RedHat the community would not grow.

A brand new linux user cannot simply jump into slackware and install it and get everything going because its not "easy", however on the flip side of the coin all they need to do with RedHat is boot up and click Workstation, Server or if they want to get to the nitty gritty, Custom and they are rocking.

RedHat has done what it set out to do. It has created an operating environment using the linux kernel that destroys anything Microsoft could ever produce. I love to hear people on the internet say "I hate RedHat" because when you ask them "why?" they just stutter, and say because its crap, or because its no good. They cant give you a true honest reason.

RedHat as a company is not doing anything wrong. They are trying to get into the corporate market, and to do that you have to have an image that can be presented to CEO's. A naked woman with a RedHat CD over her ass is not going to get that for them. When you have an investment you protect it. This is merely all RedHat is doing and you CANNOT blame them for that. They are not playing any of the dirty games that Bill Gates did/does, they are producing an awesome OS that is free. For crying out loud just leave them alone and if you "dont like RedHat", there is a simple solution. DONT USE IT, and DONT push your opinion on other people.
