The Electoral College system was not put in place for reasons that were specific to the time when it was created -- but because of the nature of our country. We have various centers of population that are far higher than other parts of the country (i.e. New York, LA, Chicago, Philly, San Diego, San Jose...) that are consolidated into just a few states. Because of this, it wouldn't take too long for Candidates to realize that if they want to maximize their campaign dollars, they just need to placate those centers of the population and leave the other 95% of the geography of the country and their population behind.
The system used in this country is designed to give the entire population a say, no matter their size or location. Further, it is designed to move slow -- so some fad, no matter how popular, can't damage the country too much.
This also brings up another interesting topic -- How the Hell did this Stanford professor get his job in the first place? Honestly, did he not realize something so obvious? Seriously, it is a basic concept that is repeated time and again throughout the constitution -- it is THE key reason why this government has worked for so long.
As an avid Stargate fan (yes, that is right, I could probably retell every episode, and yes... I am probably bias) I have to defend my favorite series from the little "stale" quip by CmdrTaco.
The view of SG-1 as stale is ridiculous... I think most viewers don't find appeal with it because the show WAS not turning into the next generation MTV\OC\BS crap. I personally am a big fan of Season 5-8, unlike some others. I think the sarcastic humor and Sci-Fi mix is awsome. I am not a fan, however, of the attempted OCafication (a word, which means teeny-bopperafication) of Stargate with the perpetual appeasement of 16 year old pale boys who won't watch a show if it doesn't have some reference to sex every sixty-nine seconds.
I am not a religous fundamentalist, nor do I believe in some sort of fanatical magic of any sort related to evoloution. However, I would like to point out the the Darwin theory of evoloution is inaccurate. This was published a number of years ago from various studies showing that there were large leaps in the evoloutionary line (stepwise in nature), rather than subtle steps as Darwin would advocate. These findings never ever gained any ground because of the overwhelming effect the Darwin vs. Religion debate has had. I am not saying anything reguarding God or Religion, just that the Darwin theory is incorrect, and there is no fossil record to support it. I would just like to point out how our "Oh so impartial" scientists and the "oh so great" ACLU are not always impartial or great. Some scientists chose Darwin as a battle ground vs. religion (which I see no reason for it to be, as religion can be quite compatible with Darwansim, can anyone say Deism ?) and will entirely refute any theories which would contradict Darwin. This is idiotic as it impedes scientific research as well as the legitimacy of science.
I think this article takes a quite "interesting" perspective when it comes to computer security. When most would see this as Russian inability to combat computer crime (therefore, permitted to run rampant), the Russians spin this as their having the best hackers in the world. Anyone ever wonder why Credit Card companies won't touch Eastern Europe, or why all of those illegal MP3 servers are based from Russia ? It is not that they are better than the rest, it is just that Russian law enforcement is that bad. The Western world (particularly the US) has a very well developed and advanced Cyber Crime taskforce that "Department K" could never match.
I was refering to materials present in stars.
Stars are highly dense and large, as the one in this article is.
And in reguards to the intense change in Luminosity with even a slight temprature difference, that is true. If the temp. of a star is increased by even a few Kelvin the total luminosity will change across the spectrum. Remember, for even a small temprature change the energy output change is very significant.
The materials vary but it goes down the logical line of fusion. Planets don't have near the mass of stars (not even close). The difference is going to be that a star has the thermonuclear reaction which is going to cause intense radiation to be emmited. This won't happen in nearly the same way on a planet because the thermonuclear reaction isn't there. Remember that with a small increase in energy there is a drastic change all across the frequency spectrum.
You also have to consider that Stars are made up of common materials that planets are not composed of. This results in the emission of something that looks like a Perfect Black-Body curve with certain amounts of energy emitted at different wavelengths that are not seen among planets.
(And if the planet were hot enough, with those common materials, it would become a star.)
I think it should be noted that the way we look at stars and planets could never really lead to that mistake. Radiation emitted by a stellar body is analyzed and it is then determined "what" the stellar body is. It is impossible to misinterpret an extremely hot stellar body with a relatively cool planet.
The whole thought of "video games being better" is a really interesting thought. But I think that people should consider the motivations behind reading and other things those crazy teachers make you do. Reading is a cognitive task designed to build certain areas of your cognitive ability that a video game simply can not do. Just like practicing a Calc problem you already know how to do may seem pointless, it still makes you better at Calc.
Yes, that's right, I said it: Crackpot. The guy who wrote this "explanation" must be having a love affair with the IBM CEO. The computing he is talking about can occur in one of two situations: distributed computing or a "super computer" (which is the same thing). It is IMPOSSIBLE for a single processor to yield that much computing power. The problem is the speed of electricity WILL NOT KEEP UP. And the concept of distributed computing is going to run into the same issues as other networks in the past. This seriously sounds like some cocaine bunny that read papers from about 6 years ago, and possibly the "maybe" speech by Sony.
I find it really interesting, and suprising, how many companies attempt to clone what\how Google does. Not all of Google's methods\soloutions are appropriate for other companies. I really think this can be seen simply in the data driven nature of google. It is impossible for some companies to impliment such methods because their infrastructure does not provide for it. Just as a company can't give "creative time" to their people and expect dramatic results.
Somebody is on cocaine... and its not a Liberal

Are you serious ?!? This thing would be so outgrageously idiotic for the masses, and for the future of the world. First off, instead of a one day fix every four years, there is a one week fix ! Second, for us in the computer knowhow, that would take YEARS (like, 2010) before it could be thought about ! Bah, maybe just me with my cup of coffee ranting on, but come on, at least I don't slip cocaine in my drinks like this guy.
I find it interesting not so much in the results, but the method used to gather this data. They use standardized testing, which is wildly inaccurate when you consider the methods by which other countries are taught. A majority of the countries use methods which fail to test comprehension, but rather how many facts (yes, there are math facts) you can remember. It is just like the kid who takes the SAT 8 times and gets a 1600, if you keep taking tests over and over, you will eventually ace it. The same falls true for these other tests: foreign students memorize data, they don't comprehend it. This can be seen in the results we are getting from offshoring Software Engineering: we get shit results. These people are not educated in the same method as those in the United States, and from the current state of World Industry (tech and other) we are demolishing the competition. And a quick note for the inevitable mention of "Japanese Superior Methods", it should be noted that the methods currently used in Japanese schools, as well as work.
I had one of my old 700 Durons sit in my car all winter so I would have a PC available on the road, and never had any issues. It would always start right up when I needed it, no problems whatsoever. I think your biggest issue could be condensation over anything else. If that happens things could fry.
I think that it should be noted that electric motors always accelerate faster than their combustion counterparts. That is because their torque begins at it's highest during the beginning of the acceleration cycle, not the end like a combustion.
I definetly have to say I am happy to see a return for both series. Many have argued that there are very few things left to do with Stargate, but there are still TONS of unfinished storylines, and villans which have yet to reappear. Especially those crazy Furrlings (anyone thinking Alf Crossed with Chewbacca ?).
P.S.: #1 Stargate Geek Here, I listen to "obtained" Stargate episodes for probably about three hours a day as I code away.
Actually... my logic was the demographic that the Dems. normally win. Young Registered voters did not vote this time around. Pick up any book relating to American Government and Elections and it will tell you that Democrats historically have a poor voter turn out. If every registered voter would have voted, the Dems. would have won by a landslide, that however is not the case. And why would you not appreciate hearing it ? If it is fact, then why do you hide from it. I am sure you "wish" that wasn't the case, but it is. The type of people who vote for Democrats are less likely to vote, it is fact, not fiction.
I think that you need to think about the demographic that lives in the areas you speak of though.. The people in Urban areas, whom tend to be Democrats, historically are lazy at voting. It is a trend that has plagued the Dems. for a while. That is why I said "your party base would rather Stay at Home then
vote if it ment them going through rain, or waiting in line.", because that is seriously the case. I am in the "youth vote category", and while I hate to put my "people" in a stereotype, the youth vote is horrible. It is a fact that Republicans kill Dems. on voter turn out.
As it turns out... the Media did say that numbers were up, but not percentage of the vote. I clearly recall hearing that election night. What the author of this article is hearing is the constant repetitive nature of 24hr news networks. You crazy Dems. are gonna have to live up to the fact that your party base would rather Stay at Home then vote if it ment them going through rain, or waiting in line.
Well, since this number\seperation system seems to work "Oh So Well", here I go.
1) First, Tax Cuts do work. This is can be seen in the obvious spike in homeowner ship during these economically trying times. Just think how many jobs are created by building a single house. Second, I think you have bought into the Kerry propaganda a bit. The mud slinger Kerry saying that Bush has policies that ship jobs over sees is really a very old tax code that was around even in the Clinton administration, and is unlikely to be changed otherwise.
2) Perhaps the duty of rereading should have fallen to you, I was making the point that Kerry would have probably done no better given the starting situation. And that Bush has done great since it is essentially pioneering a new department
3) Stay a bit more uptodate my friend. Bush is performing the largest troop movement since the Cold War. He is realiging our troops for new threats, something Clinton never did. Also, the point was that Clinton did little more than a slap of the hand to Al Qaeda. Also, do you know anything about Putin ? I hate to sound like a paranoid person, but he really has Russia down a very liberal slope
4) Perhaps I should have explained that aspect more thuroughly. Every Kerry supporter I have talked to (and I assume many in this topic) reffer to those as bad programs Bush has. And as reasons to vote for Kerry. They need to face reality. Also, I would like to make a brief comment on the Athiest vote and the Faith based initatives. Many Athiest\Agonistic site that as their single reason for a Kerry vote. Anyone scream ignorant ?
5) So are you saying that genocide wouldn't qualify ? Or prehaps defying UN resouloutions. But don't worry, I am sure that 18th nasty letter over the past decades will do the trick;)
6) (Gee... conservative and still counting this high !) Let me guess, when did terrorists grow ? And what party is half the Senate affilated with. Gee, I forgot.
7) This administration, and all of the others in the 20th century my friend. Everyone has used this practice since the Boxer rebellion. It is horrible, but it works. Speaking of which, what is that crazy thing called Democracy anyway, capoitalsim eh ? No, wait, you mean that means they could just want the products ?
8)Yes, which brings another fun point, the reverse pyramid system that is developing. Did you hear the words that it is not everyone, but just a group of people ? Again, reading out of context my friend. And about my pay stub, you do know that a system of rationing\handouts will not work right ? You find a situation where it has and I will concede "8)"
9) (almost done with my right-wing extemism !) Death = Wrong, no shit. But do you actually think the president has some magic wand sitting in his desk to stop death ! Kerry can easily SAY he can do better, but he really won't. Don't make a policy descion when the alternative is no better.
Ahh... my all-over-the-place jargon. Let us type a nice 3rd grade realtion web for the liberal youngster. Oh, a quick note, while I know Websters is the definitive source on political\economic policy, let us set that one aside for a moment. Second, I felt that it was fairly obvious that Liberals are for handout style systems, but hey it may not be that obvious to everyone. Now, let us do some fun-thinking. Let us start by the term of Burecrat. A Burecrat is someone who holds a job, and gets money for doing a shitty job or nothing at all. The jobs were created by Liberals, who feel the Government should be the stopgap in jobloss. Capitalism functions best when it is motivated by the government. Oh wait, that means tax cuts ! I would love to talk with you about this, my AIM is Dozix007, my MSN is Dozix007@hotmail.com. Pick one.
As an Elephat in the herd of Donkeys (hopefully trampling a few), I thought I would offer my thoughts on the election. I, personally, am an advocate for George W. Bush. To that end, I thought I would have some fun doing "mythbusting".
Economy started crashing six months before "Dubya" ever got in office. He gave Bush an economy in shambles
Bush delt with 9-11, and no president could have stopped the subsequent economic drop
Terrorist training in Afghanistan under Clinton, not Bush. Bush pioneered Homeland security, don't think it would have been pioneered any better by Kerry
The 100,000 Iraqi Civilian death number is wildly inaccurate
Let's all remember, Kerry is for: No Child Left Behind, The Patriot Act, Faith Based Initatives, and DMCA
Kerry's proposed policy on security would not qualify Germany for invasion during WWII, because they did not attack us
Liberals have been historically hiding their faces against threats, their ignorance creates their bliss, how blissfull were the victims of 9-11 after that ignorance
We are the global police, anyone remeber the Blukin Powder Keg, let's prevent another eh ? Remeber, we need markets to sell our products;)
Social Security has created a generation of Americans that are in a rut, and don't know how to get out. Handouts do not work.
Raising the minimum wage to 7.00 is bad. Have we forgotten about the effects of a higher minimum wage on inflation ? Costs would go through the roof
Those are just a few thougts. Liberalsim, and consequently Kerry, just does not work ! Deaths in war are very sad, and we are the United States, we should do better. However, we can not stick our faces in the sand. We WILL have another 9-11 if we allow places to exist that breed terrorism. Also, if everyone has forgot, we support Israel because they are the only Democracy. We have a policy of supporting Deomcracy, remember ? Also, that great missle shield everyone finds unneeded ? One word, PUTIN ! He is a leftist communist hardliner who will lead Russia back to it's old ways. We must be prepared ! Remember, we have to be right 100% of the time, the enemy only once ! Also, not to say I am old by any means (I am actually very young), but Liberals who feel we should help everyone seem to weed themselves out with age. The ideals are great, but they don't work. We do not live in a society that will work without incentive. We do not live in a society that will not take advantage of handouts. We are in a society where capitalsim, therfore conservatism thrive. Liberalism is inherently incompatible and creates Buracrats that purpetuate a slowdown in Capitalism
First, I would like to note that I find creationism to be dead wrong. That being said, I have little respect for the the theory of evolution as well. Statistical analyses of evolution are filled with assumptions. Rates of mutation, order of mutation, and environmental challenges are largely assumed. There is no fossil record to support this either. It is just a thought process that "works" and many find to be easy to believe. Anyone remember Walcott's study featured in Scientific America back in 1992 ?
This is not really politically related, but I am a huge Packer fan and a Bush support (wait, do I hear hick jokes in the distance ?). What is a poor divided Elephant with a Cheesehead supposed to do ?
Ahh... the mighty rebutal of "They Never did anything to us". Again, my "tiny world veiw" must be standing in the way. In my tiny window, the only nation we could go for with direct ties to Al Qaeda was Afghanistan. We went there, and we deafeated the Taliban and Al Qaeda regime. There is the argument that we have been unsuccessfull of course, however do you honestly believe that we would have complete peace in such a region over a few years ? Highly Doubtfull. Then there is the matter of invading Iraq. As I recall WWI, WWII, Veitnam, The Gulf War, and 9-11 were all caused by ignorant and lazy leaders failing to take initative. You can't live in a world where you rely on homicidal dictators to keep there word. Then the mighty UN, as I recall the UN was, and always will be an arguing body that does nothing. It was created as such in the Yalta agreement, and has served no other purpose. Had this been a "UN sanctioned" invasion the US would have still suffered 90% of the total casualties, like all other UN tasks. And as for Bush's economic paradigm. I find it interesting on two fronts. First, if you wish to asign political accountability to the economy, that Bush managed to pull the stock market from DOW levels at 8000 up to the 10,000 levels seen today. Then, I argue that Bush's politics have little to nothing to do with the economic colapse. Capitalism has cycles, and regression is one of them. The economy which crashed in 2001 was built on a bubble. As strong and large as the bubble was, it colapsed due to weak infrastructure and base.
I would also like to address your poor grammar and sentence structure. Please, the next time you comment make words coincide so that they carry meaning and appropriate grammar. That comment is just plain horrible.
P.S.: Perhaps my veiw is not narrow, it may just be that I look at more than others, and such results may eclipse your narrow mind;)
Truth is a hilarious thing. It is so different to so many people. For example, there is the truth that both Congress and the Whitehouse were presented with the same information. Or possibly the truth that Sadam Hussein was seeking (not necessarily posessing) Nuclear Arms. There is the thought that both Congress and the Whitehouse came to the same assesment, and in context of which tubes that are of specification for a Nuclear Program were considered as contributing evidence. However Truth is a broad thing, such as the truth in our economic\political (all the same) policies over the last century. Has everyone somehow forgotten that our market only works because we sell to foreign markets ? Has someone forgotten the 17 UN resouloutions Sadam Hussein violated. Had someone forgotten that other presidents have lied about more then Aluminum Tubes ! You are convicting a person who brought down a homicidal madman because he mistook the purpose of Aluminum Tubes you fool. Maybe my tiny little worldview is slightly larger than a crackpot liberal veiw that we can somehow live in a fantasy land. The TRUTH is that Sadam Hussein was dangerous and needed to be brought to justice. And there are other truths. For example the truth that Johnsons Great Society is bullshit and welfare has done nothing more than make poor families who can't advance. Maybe there is some truth in that we can't give handouts and that people need to work. Maybe there is some truth that Liberal Nations of Europe are nowhere near as successfull as the United States. But what am I talking about, I only have a "tiny little worldview".

Pick one.
Remeber, we need markets to sell our products ;)
P.S.: Perhaps my veiw is not narrow, it may just be that I look at more than others, and such results may eclipse your narrow mind ;)
