    Also, the video in TFA is worth the time. What I'm wondering is, why the need for a synchrotron? Why not just any old X-ray machine?

    I hope you're not making the argument that since the average person may not perceive the difference, then it's not really a difference. The technical specs specify what the monitor can do, not what eyeballs in front of it can do. Besides, it's not just the color difference, but also viewing angle, which is severely restricted with TN panels.

    I use the database at flatpanels.dk. Just input the main part of the model number of the monitor, and you'll get what panel(s) it comes with. There should be other databases around as well. Avoid TN, S-IPS/S-PVA/etc. is probably good enough. But do check reviews, as the panel isn't the whole story, the backlight is important too, as well as a few other factors.

    Ah those were the days. Trying to paint in HAM mode, but changing a pixel changed some number of pixels to the right of it, so you had to start painting from the left.


    Also, regarding the article, why the heck is Apple of all manufacturers using TN panels, everyone knows they suck! A supply issue perhaps? I know there was a panel factory that went up in flames a while ago, which caused the Lenovo L220X to be severely short in supply.

    Bandwidth is not like electricity. Electricity not used is energy saved. But nothing in particular is saved by not transferring data. The only interesting variables are: how much bandwidth on average, and how much peak.

    There's another important point you make: Freenet as it is know is both an app and a network built with the app. But you can easily build your own network, completely separate from the 'official' one. Is anyone using Freenet on a separate network right now, busting govs or whatever? I think no-one knows, and anyone who would know wouldn't say so.

    A few rebukes:
    1. The default for Freenet nodes is to have downstream limit = 4 * upstream limit. My stats show the total input at about 50% more compared to output over a couple of days of uptime.
    2. Revisiting is actually instantaneous for me right now, I just checked with a page I've never visited before that wasn't already in my datastore/cache (took about 14 seconds to load the first time).

    There is a trick to those infernal molex connectors. Grab hold of it with pliers from the side, close to the drive shell, and use cantilever force by twisting the pliers against the drive to plop it out. No fingers in CPU fans, bloodstained heatsinks, or deep dents in the fingers from trying to keep a hold on the fscking small tabs on the side of the connector.

    Indeed. It's also worth noting that a transition that happens instantly can happen when someone is blinking. This can be quite disorienting for that person, if the slides have about the same layout.

    Not quite. If Nvidia doesn't release a driver, the card won't work at all, and then there will be angry people all over the place. All of this could (possibly) have been avoided if Microsoft had gotten their ass in gear and released the needed information in a timely fashion. Nvidia might still have screwed up though, and then it would be purely their own fault.

    AFAIK, Nvidia and others didn't have plenty of time, that's why there were so many faulty drivers for Vista: nobody got the information from Microsoft in time.

    Also, the story has a slight smell of urban legend. Snopes hasn't picked it up yet, though.
