The point of the GPL was that it was very simple and broad-sweeping. Naturally this does make it vulnerable to attack in the sense that the legal system might feel threatened by the massive impact of such a game-changing license; copyleft practically redefines IP law in a way that those in the legal institution (eg lawyers, judges, lawmakers, and the business interests that pay for them) don't acknowledge, understand, or otherwise feel comfortable with because they don't feel in control.
What the hell are you talking about? Its no different than any other software license. The only thing different about GPL versus other licenses is that it pushes for the Stallman cult agenda rather than for money.
It didn't 'change the game' in any way what so ever. Just because every douchebag and his brother in collage and highschool wrote some app and made it GPL so they could be cool with their geek friends doesn't mean its changed the world.
A mere technicality could disqualify ANY license agreement or contract, welcome to the way the law works. Again, GPL is not unique.
Why is it GPL trolls always think the GPL is this unique world changing, nothing like it in existence license?
What applies to other licenses applies to GPL and what applies to GPL applies to other licenses.
You missed the point, GPL is not unique, anything used to cripple GPL will cripple other software licenses as well, MS and friends are in no hurry to fuck up licenses in general.
The nice thing is not the physical link, it's the fact that I can grab any headset and connect it with any phone.
So I'm guessing you've never actually used bluetooth devices?
I've used bluetooth on many different devices. Phones, PCs, cars, ect. I can only think of ONE time that bluetooth has 'just worked'. And by just worked I mean it paired off the start and worked the first time. Second use it just didn't.
I'm not sure what devices you are using, but in my experience bluetooth is a buggy unfriendly useless pile of shit that just adds another transmitter receiver pair to a device which already has two actually useful radios already on it.
Bluetooth pairing and profiles may be a great idea, but if the implementations are any indication of how it would be over wifi, then let the worthless POS die now.
GREAT! I'm so sick of dealing with shitty bluetooth stacks that don't work reliably. Doesn't seem to matter where the stack is or what it pairs too, the whole system is a horrible buggy pile of partially interoperable shit.
Wonder when you guys will learn that its not free and you're actually paying for it while at the same time giving up control to someone else who has no real interest in being efficient.
I'm not really against healthcare reform in America, but your comment
Keep giving us free stuff or we'll bring you down!
is exactly the problem. If they keep giving you free stuff, you'll bring the government down anyway, and yourself with it.
We'll stick with being free and taking responsibility for ourselves, you go ahead and expect someone else to spoon feed you everything...
Considering their population totals compared to other nationalities who migrate to America and their relative distance, coupled with their proximity to other nations much like America. Considering the number of people I personally know, as a southern redneck... well, I'd be shocked if you could find me some sort of statistic that proves them to be unusually low.
Sure, there are less Finns than Mexicans, but thats because the entire population of Finland will cross the border from Mexico tonight. Okay, I exaggerate, but your comparison is more than a little misleading.
And your only TRULY free if you can walk up to a random guy on the street, knock him out, put him in a cage, hook up electrodes to his genitals and make him the electricity dance for your amusement. If you can't do that, someone's restricting your freedom.
Shrug, I consider myself free because I can find a video of just that on the Internet and not have to risk doing it myself:/
People leaving in rural areas were also the last to join the telephone and electrical networks as well.
I'm not supporting you're choice to live far away from what you want.
I personally want to live on a nice river, upstream of an artificial lake, with a couple acres of land, a dock with a nice bass boat sitting in it ready to go whenever I want. However, my job requires me to use the Internet all the time to transfer data often enough to make dialup unacceptable. So my choice, stay employed doing what I do, or move where I want to live.
You have the same choice, deal with it and shut the fuck up cause I don't want to hear it, or more importantly pay for it. We don't always get what we want, especially when our wants conflict with each other.
So there, I have the other shoe on my foot, and I hear where you are coming from and I think its a crock of crap from someone who is a more than a wee bit spoiled.
The 'expense' is mostly artificial. Laying the lines costs money. Going from 5mb to a few gb is a relatively trivial expense if theres already copper in the ground. Got fibre? The sky is the limit. The upgrade cost once the cable is laid is dirt cheap as the technology the supports it can do things faster on the same wire/fibre.
Copper isn't a great upgrade path, but its certainly doable, fiber is far easier.
By 2015, 100MB sounds about like a fair offering in a sane environment, the technology is already well beyond whats needed to provide it.
With that said, I certainly don't see it as a requirement. Of course, I think considering Internet access or even telephone access something that should be considered a right is just completely off the silly scale, so i may not be the best gauge to use.
Rights are always an imposition on someone else. The right to free speech obliges others to tolerate offensive speech.
Spoken like a true idiot.
It doesn't require anyone to tolerate it. You don't have the right to run your mouth any where and any time you want. You have the right to say what you want without the government holding against you. That does't mean you can legally break some other law in the name of the right.
Rights ensure your freedom, but not at the cost of imposing on others.
You are entitled to say whatever the fuck you want in your home to anyone willing to listen. You don't get to do it in the white house, the court house, or especially my house.
I could blow holes in the rest of your points, but why bother, you aren't rational anyway.
Arguments such as yours are generally spoken by collage students who have drank far too much of a few professors coolaid to have a sane view of the world, well and the professors themselves.
The people who use that rationale are also generally the ones who also take advantage of everything other citizens provide for them.
Sorry, but all the results in welfare system is 100 lazy schmucks who clog, abuse and deplete the system for everyone one person that needs some help.
The needs of the few do not outweight the needs for the few or one.
No one in America has an excuse for not having a job with the exception of the disabled, and there are VERY FEW disabilities that prevent someone from working completely. I can't speak for other countries, but poor and homeless in America are that way by choice. I've been both, you can dig your way out if you want to.
The question is, do you want to, or would you rather just ride on someone elses coat tails.
And what do you do about the big red glaring 'This SSL certificate doesn't match!@$!@%!@%!@%!@%!@%' warnings that slashdot people typically bitch about because they love their self signed certs and ignorance?
All the scammers have to do is instead of recording your keystrokes, gesturing, etc., they display a 'fake' copy of the bank to you through whatever software they have installed on your computer. They take the information you think you are sending to your bank (but are sending to them instead) and instantly have their scripts login to the site from their own systems (or some other bot on the net).
Which of course requires them to modify the software I'm using so that it ignores or fakes the SSL certificate. Of course doing that requires them to have admin rights on my PC.
It doesn't work by tricking me into going to a phishing site since I don't enter any information at domains I'm not positive about, with valid SSL certificates. That is, after all, the primary point of SSL, authentication. Encryption is a secondary feature that is easily implemented after the authentication has been done anyway, it lays the ground work for the key exchange required for encryption.
So, they have to own my entire PC, as root, or own my bank.
You may be concerned, I'm not.
I'm more concerned by the ridiculous restrictions required for passwords now days that are so absolutely retarded that they make the passwords less secure by eliminating huge chunks of possibilities. You make passwords more secure by adding possibilities, not removing them. Requiring a password to be 6 digits long immediately removes the need to check almost a billion potential permutations, if you only use letters and numbers.
Stop making passwords so ridiculous that people can't remember them.
Because when your awesome logging software logs a code generated by my key FOB, that is only valid for one use, during a 5 minute window, then you're still SOL since by the time you get it, I've already used it to login to my account and thus invalidated it for any future attempt.
How about you leave the security to those of us who understand it, or at the very least, read the wikipedia article before you try to blow it out of the water.
For car users, its like if added another lock and key to your car, that ensured the windows were up, doors locked, engine disabled, they key would only work during a 5 minute window around the time you requested it, and the key would destroy itself after its use, requiring that you get a new unique key next time you wanted to unlock your car. So if someone steals it, they have to use it within 5 minutes, AND before you use it.
Breaking the windows in this case would be like someone hacking into the banks computer systems. Not hacking YOUR account. It would be like breaking into GM and rekeying EVERY GM CAR, which is far less of a problem for you specifically.
Realistically, a key fob IS like a car key. It must be physically present to work.
A better comparison is...
Imagine if your car required just a pin number to unlock the door and start it to drive off. Some cars already do have trivial to bypass numeric entry systems. These are your back account website passwords. Thats where online banking is NOW. Adding a second factor to the equation, say a key fob which generates a one time key for us to access your account is adding a physical requirement to your account. You must have the key fob in your possession to get the key. Now your car requires the passkey AND a physical key to get in. Your car is now ever more secure.
Just for future reference about the numeric keypad entry on some vehicals:
Don't buy those ever. I've come across several and its never taken me more than 30 minutes to unlock one, and thats generally been done in the middle of a parking lot where no one bothered to say anything to me while I was doing so. You might as well just leave your car unlocked if you're using those numeric entry units. Theres your code, and a dealer code that is common to all cars at the dealer in most cases that pretty much everyone at the dealer will know.
'Fuses' haven't been 'Fuses' in years. As a general rule they are still referred to as fuses, but its generally just NVRAM or the like representing those 'fuses'.
Virtually all 'fuses' can be reprogrammed now days with a proper chip programmer.
Its possible in some cases to design a circuit capable of changing its own fuses although in most cases the device needs to be 'offline' during the procedure so changing fuses on a processor or ram requires that you are using some other device during the reprogramming.
I don't think anything has had a truely one time programmable fuse for at least 10 years.
Just for reference, you do not need to 'register' your copyrights with the copyright office in order to have its protections. Every work is copyrighted automatically. You are granted more protection with registered copyrights as you've made it so others can confirm they are or aren't violating your copyright.
Registration simply puts you as the copyright owner in a better position legally, but it is in no way required.
Awe, look how cute you are being, trying to use an Apple to oranges comparison.
Apple has never attacked an individual for doing it, although there is a legal right to do so for anyone who downloads a modified version of OSX to facilitate the process. Apple doesn't bother going after those people however, nor does it go after the forums that facilitate figuring out how to hack OSX.
If you know anything about the OSX 'hack' you'd realize that they did just about the bear minimum to make it clear that you were not allowed to use it on a PC. Just replace on kernel module with an original name of 'DONT_STEAL_MAC_OS' or something along those lines.
Apple went after a company who was CLEARLY violating the license agreement that they agreed to during the installation of the OS on the PC. Then they resold it as if it were an Apple computer, without changing any of the contact information within the OS. So now Vanilla PC with OSX is sold to grandma for a 3rd the cost, and instead of grandma calling the people she bought it from, she calls the number the OS tells her to, which is Apples. Company that sells it gets all the profit and no responsibility. Apple does not price their OS as if its a software sale, they price it as an upgrade for existing owners, which everyone is, since it comes with all Macs anyway.
Apple doesn't give a fuck what you do on your PC as long as you don't call them and you pay for your copy of OSX. They just don't want a bad name for not supporting your pile of shit/cheapo hardware, nor do they want you to cut into their sales using their own work. You may want to run OSX on your PC but Apple doesn't want you to, so too bad for you. I don't want Windows to be so full of security issues either, but too bad for me.
You do realize that requiring signed boot loaders on an intel platforms is pretty easy and has been done before right? In fact its been done for a device listed in this very thread that you replied to...
And no, the law would not give a fuck if you required signed boot loaders on hardware, as long as you are clear up front about it.
They can sell you whatever they want in that respect, and you are free to not buy it.
Jesus christ will you people shut the fuck up about the iPhone.
'Apple Tax', 'Stealing from the developers', 'Monopoly'
Yea, what the fuck ever, as an iPhone developer myself, let me tell you how much I care... not a damn bit.
Rather than spending your time whining about how apple sucks and limits you as a developer, get off your lazy fucking ass, write the app, pay the $100, put it on the app store and make your $100 back in a week, LITERALLY.
The app store is a fucking cash cow for developers with even half a clue. Sorry you have to pay them a cut of the profits and they have to approve you, but heres another hint, all 10 people that find your website and your app and buy it from you don't compare to the thousands of people who will come across your app when its on the app store, even as an exteremely low ranking app.
No normal user gives a fuck about jailbreaking. What can you do with a jailbreak? Run apps in the background, thats about it, well anyone who has used an iPhone as a development platform will tell you just how much that sucks the battery out of the device. A 3 day charge turns into an 8 hour charge. Users REALLY DON'T WANT YOUR SHITTY BACKGROUND APP JUST TO GET FACEBOOK IMS!
REALLY, they don't
You arent required to buy an iPhone. You aren't required to use an iPhone. You aren't required to develop for an iPhone. YOU in particular aren't even smart enough to realize WHY you would want to do any of that, you're just too busy worried about how Apple controls other peoples lives.
Everyone who owns an iPhone is generally pretty damn happy with them. The only people that talk like this that I've come across are just jealous for one reason or another of apples success or have iPhone envy. Yes, thats all it is. EVERYONE already knows about all the 'Bad Stuff' (tm) that Apple does with the iPhone, no one cares, except you douche bags who are STILL bringing it up.
Heres the party line:
Apple sucks, DRM, Lockdown, Apple Tax, carrier lockin (insert more rambling bullshit sounding like the adults from Peanuts), our FOSS software is better and is FREE!
Who gives a shit about your half complete crapware, Apples device and software is Cool, makes sense for people who just pick it up without a manual, and 'just works'.
Just Works means that while people are dicking with downloads, dependancies and other bullshit to get your shitty software to work, a touch or two on the App store and a dollar out of their pocket and their good to go.
Spend less of your time being a retarded jealous whining bitch.
Spend more of your time making something superior, then Apples practices will not matter.
You, and everyone like you, sounds just like the RIAA.
We suck, no one wants to buy our stuff, lets make up some bullshit and attack everyone else, including our customers in order to sell more of our crapware!
You keep being a whiney bitch with 0 market share, and the rest of us will continue to make a living off of Apples horrible horrible HORRIBLE products that people LOVE to buy.
Ever wonder if your perspective on the world is wrong?
While the guys making hacks obviously know a bit about the technology as they managed to get something working.
That in no way makes them qualified software engineers or developers.
I regularly turn out a 'hack' in a weekend, then spend a month getting it production ready, testing it, trying everything I can think of to break it, then throwing every automated test (based on stuff our customers have done) at it, then double checking documentation, and plenty of other stuff that I don't have on the top of my head at the moment.
This is something the FOSS supporters and hackers of the world don't get, the 'writing the first draft of the software' part is the easy part, and its also puts you at about the 5 to 10% complete stage. Documentation, Quality Assurance and other bits of the presentation are actually far more important to the customer 9 times out of 10.
Making a hack is generally the easiest part of the entire development process, and just because you can make one, doesn't mean you're a developer or engineer, stop thinking it does. Its only a small part of the job.
And IT ALWAYS WILL, just like racism. This is a fact, regardless of how much you'd like to deny it.
Males and Females are different, thank god. It is natural that we are going to have natural tendancies to do one thing or another, to be better at some things and worse at others. Race is the same way. If were weren't DIFFERENT we would all be the same color, build, height, ect.
If your goal in life is to abolish racism or sexism you're going to lead a pretty unhappy and ignorant life.
Racism and sexism alone are not bad. The help us make assumptions about how people are going to react, their preferences about things, and likely strengths and weaknesses. This process of stereotyping and generalization about groups of people is something our mind learned to do just fine on its own and occurs to animals of all ages even without anyone pushing an agenda on them. Racism and sexism are useful in the world we have evolved in and will be as long as people are different. How we categorize people into groups may change (we may no longer have racism because interracial mixing has basically done away with what we now call 'race'), but we're going to do it no matter what. Our brain profiles without our consent. EVERYONEs brain does, deal with it.
The real problem is not racism or sexism, its hate and fear. In the case of this particular article it would appear to me that someone is actually trying to insight hate and fear using sexism as a source and an example that just doesn't exist.
In my limited worldly experience, 9 times out of 10 when someone is screaming 'racism' or 'sexism' they are in fact themselves the 'racist' or 'sexist' person.
Heres the simple solution to both racism, sexism and myism (above). Remember that these are stereotypes and don't apply to EVERYONE equally. Don't assume that someone is being hateful towards you because of your race or sex right off the bat. Maybe they are just ignorant or unthoughtful at the moment, it is also possibly that you are in fact wrong because of other events in your life they have no knowledge of.
On the internet its even worse, someone who would normally be very considerate of someones race or sex may make some horrible jokes because they don't realize it is offensive to you because it targets your 'group'. This does not make it THEIR problem, its yours if you are offended.
Think about it for a second. Does the comment or treatment make sense for you, does it actually apply TO YOU? No? Then move the fuck on and don't start some holy crusade because it may offend someone else. If it does apply to you then why? If its true then get over it, if its untrue for YOU PERSONALLY, is it the stereotype true in general? Yes, then again, shut the hell up, thats life, we are all different and have strengths and weaknesses.
Of course as with any stereotype or set of generalizations they are just they, they don't apply to everyone or every situation. For instances if you came up to me and said 'this person in southern Georgia is a racist bastard', it would be a safe bet that you were right. However, I do know plenty of people in the area that aren't hateful fucks, so it'd be hard for me to condemn anyone for it until I saw it myself. Now if everyone else would try it...
If someone truly is a racist/sexist hateful fuck, it usually stands out pretty clearly to everyone around them. It tends to be something thats hard to hide, you won't need to call them on being a hateful bastard, everyone will already know and there is a really good chance they won't get that far in life unless they are surrounded by other hateful bastards. In that situation it is probably more useful for everyone involved if you just separate yourself from those people. Let them die, stuck in their ways, don't let them get to you and make you hateful as well. Sometimes the proper fix to a situation is to leave it.
I've yet, in my development career to run into any company or group of programmers who accepted hateful people who take it out on others, its just too much drama, annoyance and shame for the rest of us to put up with it.
Except that with an iPhone (and plenty of others), theres an app for that, so portable chain yanking with full video is rather easy, and doesn't require overly airbrushed photos of cartoon models for $10 a copy.
Haven't well all seen Merge porn at this point anyway?
What the hell are you talking about? Its no different than any other software license. The only thing different about GPL versus other licenses is that it pushes for the Stallman cult agenda rather than for money.

The question is, do you want to, or would you rather just ride on someone elses coat tails.
You can't prevent the interceptions, not while allowing users to bank over the Internet. The question just becomes 'where did it get intercepted'.
This can all be done with the phone systems as well, and in fact, has been done, its just been a few years and it tends to not be remembered.

In fact its been done for a device listed in this very thread that you replied to ...
And no, the law would not give a fuck if you required signed boot loaders on hardware, as long as you are clear up front about it.
They can sell you whatever they want in that respect, and you are free to not buy it.
Who has been sued for hacking the iPhone, Wii, NDS or XBOX?
No one?
Then who exactly are they going to defend?
You want them to use Nintendo and MS for threats or something?
Maybe you just don't recall the statements they made in favor of those homebrew groups?
Jesus christ will you people shut the fuck up about the iPhone.
'Apple Tax', 'Stealing from the developers', 'Monopoly'
Yea, what the fuck ever, as an iPhone developer myself, let me tell you how much I care ... not a damn bit.
You keep being a whiney bitch with 0 market share, and the rest of us will continue to make a living off of Apples horrible horrible HORRIBLE products that people LOVE to buy.
Ever wonder if your perspective on the world is wrong?
I rant, sorry, retards do it to me.
God I hate this sort of statement.
I was about to say ...
There is a large difference between a 'feminist' and an 'uppity sexist bitch', but I think you did it much more elegantly.
Except that with an iPhone (and plenty of others), theres an app for that, so portable chain yanking with full video is rather easy, and doesn't require overly airbrushed photos of cartoon models for $10 a copy.
Haven't well all seen Merge porn at this point anyway?
