  1. Goverment at its best! on The End for Vonage? · · Score: 3, Insightful

More than a few years ago, the big AT&T was forced to split up to remove a monopoly they had. Well, lets see, now SBC, Bellsouth, Cingular, DishNetwork and probably more I don't know of all fly under that AT&T banner. All reports of Qwest suck, and I have my own hatred for Vonage but it was a choice some found to be good. Where is all my choice going and why isn't someone in the government stopping this? The telecoms are raping the people AGAIN, and although not a monopoly yet, its getting to the point of being one if not something worse. Now that VoIP is being challenged, that could effectively eliminate even more plays like Charter and Comcast.

Down with Vonage!! I had the service for 11 months. First 3 months was great, but then nothing but trouble after I deployed to the Gulf for 6 months. My wife tried to call them repeatedly to have it fixed and they kept blaming my ISP which after I got home I ruled out as it happened on my COMCAST, neighbors ATT, and Clearwire in local area. I could see one ISP being the problem, but not 3, and after I called again they said I wasn't qualified to make such assumptions. Funny, I can sure manage to make UHF/VHF, and SAT links and manage the LAN on a US Guided Missile Cruiser, but I wasn't technically smart enough to call the bullshit flag on the blame they focused on my ISP. Further, when the 10 month mark rolled around, I had military orders requiring me to move and at the time it was to a place I wouldn't have broadband, or hell, access at all, and they tried to pressure me into keeping the service and singing another year anyway. They just didn't get the fact that small islands sometimes don't have access. Then, they argued with me about how I owed them an early cancellation fee even though I was also canceling due to shitty service THEY couldn't fix. I had to end up also telling them a lie that I was not married, and I had no family who could make use of the account before they would close it. I had read horror stories at the time about people who had went over the 12 month period already and Vonage had refused to cancel the account, or had verbally said they would and the charges kept coming. I feared this so I even canceled the card. And low and behold, I started getting statements from my bank who issued a new card telling me about the activity that they were refusing.

  7. Elevated privileges on Surprise, Windows Listed as Most Secure OS · · Score: 1

A lot of security wholes are worse than they should be simply because people don't understand, or find it inconvenient to run at a lower privileged level. Most unix vulnerabilities are going to be contained by the user that they are ran under. For me personally, I run "every" service in a jail separate from the host environment. I can do this from read only images, or mounted directories, and preserve write privs to JUST the jail. If the jail gets attacked, I can just restore it from one of the backed up images I make of it nightly. With windows, you don't have this kind of separation where an app can be ran outside of the host environment. With windows also, most users run as a admin user with or without knowing it. This makes small attacks that could be reduced to virtually nothing a real serious issue as it has complete control now. Vista was a step in the right direction as far as users running with escalated privileges, but it has already been shown that there are ways around those warnings and that they 'COULD' be faked. Another problem is the users themselves. You can have the most secure OS in the world, but your weakest link is always going to be the user. Does it matter if you get a popup saying "STOP! you are about to install a virus that will cause death and mayhem across the world, and release nuclear munitions into the air with unknown targets!!!" if the person doesn't even read it and clicks the OK button out of habit? Most unix users are unix users because they know it and took the time to learn something. They also are mostly aware running as root for your user is dangerous. Most windows users can't be bothered to type in a password, or be bothered actually researching an app before installing. Security is only as good as the mentality of the users, and windows doesn't instill that mentality thus reducing it in my eyes to a much lower position of security.
