No but it seems clear that you can buy your way onto it. I think Apple have more than enough money to do that if they wanted.
My guess is that they don't really care at all about what happens with the Formula1 team, and are buying McLaren entirely for the road car division and to get their foothold in the automated/advanced tech car industry with an already established prestige brand.
I guess Apple could just buy the road car part including the brand name, but not the racing team. Assuming the racing team comes with whatever they buy, I'd say there would be a 50/50 chance that they will simply stop funding the Formula1 team if they can't simply sell it off to get run under a different name.

I'm not so sure about 4k needing much more then regular HD, because sites like Netflix are always gonna have to support people with the least bandwidth, so that means they're gonna compress the hell out of everything.
I'm betting that the only way 4k is ever gonna look noticeably better than 1080 is if you have a 4k BluRay, or an OTA antenna and the TV companies ever start producing/broadcasting in 4k.
TV over cable or the internet is gonna be compressed to hell for bandwidth reasons (like it already is), so if those are your main/only sources then in terms of picture quality, a new 4k TV wont be any better than the 1080 one its replacing.

  16. It isn't jsut HDMI 2.0a that you need, the GPU has to be capable of supporting/outputting that resolution. One of the factors involved there is the amount of video memory it has.

You obviously have never owned a BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, etc etc etc.
For example, go try and buy an off-the-shelf ZF transmission and replace the one in your car, even though it uses the identical transmission. The car won't even power on past its startup check let alone let you start the motor. You need to buy the one from the registered dealer which is 3X as expensive just because they can get away with it. Literally the only difference is the right ID code programmed into the transmission's EEPROM. And no the dealer won't reflash your stock one even though they have all the equipment to, and that would fix it straight away.

  18. Not that I like Microsoft, but at least they seem to be saying they will always render at 4k. Maybe its all just cleverer weasel words.

I'm sure that if Apple really wanted to, they could just keep upping the offer until it's impossible for Mclaren to say no, but I REALLY hope it doesn't go through.
From literally hundreds in the 50's, McLaren are one of the very few remaining actually British prestige car companies.
Rolls Royce, Mini are owned by BMW (German), Bentley is owned by VW (German), Jaguar is owned by Tata (Indian), Lotus is owned by Proton holdings (Malaysian) and as far as I can tell, Aston Martin is actually a mostly Italian/Arab consortium.
The only other still truly British sports car company that I can think of that actually makes cars is Morgan (Who knows whats happening with Noble and TVR, they were always very low-volume anyway).
Also, McLaren are beyond obsessive about good engineering and true craftsmanship. I'm sure that under Apple/American management, they will be "educated" to be a lot more "pragmatic" about costs vs. perceived quality through branding/advertising vs actual quality through engineering.

  20. My definition of true 4k (and I suspect most people's) is something that was rendered at 4k, not rendered at a lower resolution, then scaled/interpolated up. i.e. lossless rather than lossy.

  23. Wait so the new PS4 is not actually rendering at 4k, it's just interpolating/upscaling? *sigh*.
This reminds me of the same dirty tricks TV manufacturers used when HD was the next big deal. Tons of LCD TVs being sold as "HD-ready" and "Blu-Ray compatible" yet their panels had native resolutions much lower than 1080.
