The research budget for General motors is $7 billion. The budget for ISRO (Indian Space Reseaerch Organization) is $ 1 billion.
But ISRO looks like covering a larger scope of work compared to GM R&D.
Direct figures 0.5 Bn and 400 billions do not represent the real proportions of projects. However no denying that there is lot of catching up to be done for people who want to compete USA
From where the energy is going to come which will pull (pr push) the elevetor( or the objects in elevator) up?
By laws of physics we are going to do (mgh) amount of work, where m is mass of satellite, g is gravity and h is height.
To take something at 36000 km above earth surface, mgh is same, no matter what way you choose.
Is this much energy it going to come from rockets? Then whatt's the purpose of elevator? Why not use rocket only?.
Hope I am making myself clear, we anyway need something to push it up, every time. So how is a cable connected elevator going to help?
Probably I am missing some point. Please enlighten me here.
Innovation can be done when you have enough money to drive an SUV without worrying about gas prices and not to worry about terrist attacks (believe me, USA is 1000 safest place in world, I am saying this inspite of 911)
Americans are way too spoiled and pampered and they think that the whole world is like that and it is going to remain like that forever. Wake up, this high standard of living and GDP growth is based on disorderly-ness in universe, perceived or real, and the world is getting orderly very fast. If you know entropy in thermodynamics, you know what I am talking about.
What you say might be true about calls centers, but aren't they better than automated systems?
All so much being said about "exporting jobs to overseas". Consider this.
When Coca cola arrived in Indian market, they purchased all the small local soft drink stocked and made sure that it is not delivered to shops for sale. So people did not see the local soft drinks and were forced to buy Coca cola.
Now the company could do it because of huge dollar might. The dollar-rupee transaction rate favoured American companies.
Same or similar things happened for TV, Washing machines etc. And many american companies prospered at the cost of local companies.
That was free trade, wasn't it?
So now how can you complain if the dollar transaction rate is against "somebody" in USA?
And what makes you think that if you stop going these jobs overseas, will people in USA be hired? No, there will be software writing robots.
There are always two sides to coin.

When US put sanctions against Iraq pharma factories, it caused death of alomst 5,00,000 iraqi children. Medeline Albright acknowledged this fact and said "this was worth it" On what account you are going to put this deaths? They were as civilians as you are. I agree 100% that this world as black and white.
Sorry for one step diversion, but let me say this. Have you heard of the scientist, who ruled out possibility of life on any planet he found when he discovered that the conditions on the planet are not like earth? The problem is he forgot that a different kind of life can evolve in different conditions. What I mean is,agreed that we should priotitize the needs, but the steps and structure western world followed to achieve this living standard are not the only steps that can be taken towards better life. Each and every idea that provides potential needs to be exploited. Who knows, using the newly available infomration medium, those rural people will learn to harvest rain water and then they will have clean water.
