...and as a corporation, they have to sustain themselves. In order to fund this 'free' service, they must display advertisements. This really isn't all that complicated. When Microsoft started using their protocol, users wouldn't be seeing AOL ads - they would be seeing MS ads. When users start using Jabber, they see no ads, as opposed to AOL's ads.

As such, I would strongly suggest that if Jabber and company offer to display AOL ads. I mean, I honestly think it's only fair since you're using their bandwidth, their server power, and their support staff. It really is pretty much a free ride right now...

I mean, I can't even webbrowse at 11am because that's when all the kids wake up to go "napster" their favorite songs before lunch, literally bringing the network to a crawl.

From what I understand, most UC schools get their resnet internet access either at discount with help from the state, or for free. I serious do not think this is a valid use of my (and "our" for those of you living in California) tax dollars. Why should I be paying for someone else to napster the network to death? Sheesh.

Sharky was asking for DVI output greater than 1600x1200. I'm sorry, but there doesn't exist a TMDS chip that can do it yet. The best that Silicon Image has been able to produce is a 1600x1200 chip - and even then, there are only two or three cards that have it. The reason is cause there really just aren't any monitors out there that support it. There is a Viewsonic monitor that "sort of" does it, but not really. It cheats by taking 1600x1200 data and scaling it to 1280x1024 - that monitors native resolution. There are two other manafacturers - Apple and SGI - both making "large" LCDs, but those aren't quite up to snuff. While standard PCs use 1600x1200, Apple and SGI are both manafacturing LCD monitors that are digital using 1600x1024. Yes, there are different applications for this, but are useless in that there aren't any standard chipsets to support this. *shrug* Sharky can keep wishing for >1600x1200, but you better have some monitors that can support it.

This is probably due to the fact that high end financial industries have to provide technical support. This about this. I havn't been trained.'

Don't get me wrong - don't think this is a case of "let's cut down on expenses and only train our employees in Windows and Mac." It's a simple fact that it's very hard to support 3, 4, 6, 10+ OSs. So yeah, a good design idea is on the 'we don't support your os' page is to put a note to say that you may continue with other OSs, but without technical support. Simple as that.
