it's quite easy to see that all the techies - all 80 of y'all - are going to meet 2 people from management, and nothing's gonna happen. i see it as just a way to "show" that they care bout the IT deptt more than they really do. i would just go eat and come back (if u really want to go, i.e)
it woulda made sense to ask for suggestions/ideas from the tech deptt (im sure they know not all 80 will respond). management meeting with techies doesnt take much time as it is.
i hope they seriously do not entertain thoughts of being a portal. that's what everyone lost out with a few years ago, and things are no different now. let the google labs keep working on specific projects, and offer them as different services, as they do now; instead of becoming a yahoo.
like, if you buy a box of whatever, and realize that whatever's inside isnt exactly, what you saw in the picture. yup, watch out, novell - you really shoulda put the whole thing in!
if you ask me, wi-fi should be community-based. set up access-points at intersections, and charge for that. i would like to see the ppl on the block be charged the bill - that way, everyone gets a nominal (almost negligible for anyone to crib about) amount to pay, and connectivity for everyone everywhere. im thinking from a city-wide point of view, and i dont see why it wouldnt work outside of it.
i dont wanna see a business model, i want someone taking the initiative to get ppl connected. get the business ppl involved with all their "business model" mumbo-jumbo, and just see things get messed up.
also, we cannot think about deploying massive wi-fi grids by thinking of charginf individuals separately. its not a wired connection coming into the home, and hence... so, communit-based service with everyone footing the very nominal bill of setting up access-points at strategic locatons.
and the linux initiative - i know ppl have touched upon it before. but their name was on the company listing of those supporting osdl and linux. when things were going ok, they were part of the program, and now with these guys in charge, they just bitchin bout it. when someone works for a company/organization, all the work belongs to that organization. can an employee leave the firm, and then sue that firm for not letting him/her take that src code and use it elsewhere? isnt this analogous to what SCO/Caldera are doing?
i wont think too much about it mainly cos its a review by "Fortune" magazine. reading reviews of tech products from fortune reminds me of clarkes' saying - "any sufficiently advanced tech..." they would have been the same ppl reviewing and voting for 10.5-clicks payment systems.
is the process of buying music at iTMS any different from say, any of the billions of websites charging customers? i dont know cos i dont use it, but im guessing you have to enter your credit card info, and click 'submit'... ?
i must admit that apple did not slouch in getting it out quick. with all the incoming lawsuits against file-sharing and p2p, all they had to do were make a few calls to the recording industry, put up some servers for download, and have a payment system running along with the apple store for iTMS?
going by that logic, if SCO wins the legal battle, and makes linux an OS available for download from their site, then they will have to be called inventors for their invention "iLinux". just cos they "invented" a new process for "buying" what was freely available.
i dont think iTMS qualifies to be an inventon. sorry. it's not an invention. what is gonna be next years invention? an online movie store, where u can download mpegs for $4.99? ppl dont know what an invention means anymore? most ppl had already thought of that model long before apple or any corp. executive did. but we dont have the resources to do it. of course, im not speaking out against apple cos im sure they didnt ask to be named "invention of the year". just the idiots who review the "inventions" and judge them
why dont we hear bout all the far-eastern electronics and hardware that come into this country?
wasn't buying a japanese car sometime in the 60's and 70's also frowned upon? maybe it is not explicitly said that it is, but just by reporting it, you knowwww what is implied by the speaker. maybe everytime someone buys a sony discman or a toshiba laptop, we should write it in our blogs, and raise our eyebrows and smirk a bit.
Forget outsourcing - I'm more surprised that MIT actually had to look and spend outside its own doors for setting up a CMS. any decent grad student woulda done it - not really a big deal. Ironic that a programming job for the EE/CE/CS department had to be given to an outside firm.
Being a student, who's always lookin for jobs related in my field to put in my resume, I would be pissed to learn my department spends money on any firm while I apply for a loan, and look around for a job.
right, but are these changes propagated upwards towards the newer releases(2.4 ---> 2.6), or are they done back (2.4 --- 2.6)? like, would the changelog for this release look like the changelog for the latest 2.6 release, or the other way round?
on the 2.4 and 2.6 releases? with 2.6 so close to release... is there much point to having a 2.4+x release out? are the changes made to the new 2.4 already in the 2.6, or is it still newer stuff which hasnt been put into 2.6?
EA Microsoft, Lotus, Sun, and Novell seem to have settled on SIP. Intel, H-P, Hitachi, Sony, and more or less the entire open source world is going toward XMPP, sometimes better known as Jabber. Are those two communities ever going to speak to one another?
PF I think so. Over time users will demand that, so you can imagine it working out in different ways.
the use of "over time" shows that they know what is needed now, but wont implement it simply cos it doesnt serve "them" much. very closed way of thought for someone with those credentials.
on http://www.sco.com/company/execs/, its funny that almost everyone on that board is from the same university called "Brigham Young" (BYU). is that the only university out there in utah?
amazing. buddies havin beer, talkin bout the good ol college days and talkin bout whatevers goin on right now, and where they will be. perfect.
and i dont mean the allegations of threats against scox.
i know nothing about the law, but surely if rabid dogs are put to sleep, why cant the same be done here (again, i dont mean the allegations of...)
i mean, for how long is this going to continue? i detest the real people behind scox now - their techies (i dont expect anymore [but didnt think it would go down so low either] from management). i dont care if they have to lose their jobs and be unemployed, but seeing this happen and remaining there is disgusting. its always the same everywhere, isnt it? techies are just happy sitting behind their monitors, and doing what the idiots who dont understand jack about what their company really does, orders them to do.
i cant imagine being the head of tech at scox, and attending a meeting with these fools.
also, i would like to know in which field nearly all the CEOs are not educated in that particular field. like, can a project manager from an IT company go and become CEO at a law firm, or maybe a hospital, or say financial institution. if not, then why do i notice nearly all the CEOs in IT companies coming from other disciplines?
and as per his resume, "From 1988 to 1996, he worked at networking leader Novell where he was responsible for growing Novell Japan's growth to more than $100 million in revenue. He concluded his tenure at Novell as vice president and general manager of Novell's Embedded Systems Division (NEST)."
i dont know what to make of that (him working at novell as VP, and suing them now).

doesn;t something new of this scale need a law/bill to be passed before it's implemented?
if you ask me, wi-fi should be community-based. set up access-points at intersections, and charge for that. i would like to see the ppl on the block be charged the bill - that way, everyone gets a nominal (almost negligible for anyone to crib about) amount to pay, and connectivity for everyone everywhere.

why? cos shes prolly never seen a skinny naked guy with +4 bifocal horn-rimmed glasses? :P
Olive Garden will sue the new Olive Garden then

when we have our own experts at slashdot?
really, it's not funny. you make a very valid point. if the criteria of all businesses were to cut costs and raise profits ...

not to mention pretty lame in the implementation.
... ok, well its not a table, so what!
it doesnt even show the "state" of the tagged object - the ciggie pack is closed while the projection just shows a generic pack of ciggies. jeez!!
i can add a picture of a nescafe bottle to the icons on msn and
looks like an engineering interns final year project, only made known cos its 'meeedia labs'. tsk tsk!

haha, yes. but im assuming its gonna be what the real thing would look like. they wouldnt put it up otherwise (would they?)
