  1. Re:System Activity feedback on What's Coming In KDE 4.4 · · Score: 1

    Not for me it isn't. Mine always shows the username column selected for a descending sort (the column is highlighted and the column header has the arrow to the right). It isn't actually sorted by username or any other column, and clicking on any column header makes no difference (username remains selected, no sorting occurs).

    Not sure if this has been fixed yet, but I'm using KDE 4.3.1 and I've never been able to sort the columns in that 'thing'. I'd probably use it a lot more if I could sort, but instead end up falling back on opening up htop in a konsole.

    Wierd, I have not had that happen to me.

    Are you by any chance using any extensions that modify the page source or page rendering in any way?

    Can anyone comment on what specifically causes the problem? (like a broken tag for example)

    Nope, I also had no fucking clue. Then, I read the posts following yours, and I still have no fucking clue.

    Perhaps these so called problems are related to the browser config or a Firefox extension?

  5. CPU Time Accuracy on Paid To Spam · · Score: 1
    I see a lot of posts about how they calculate CPU time (whether its clock time, or usage time), but I dont see anything about HOW they calculate this. A few things come to mind:

    How, and how often is the program polling for this information? Is it checking total CPU usage, or just what the program itself is using?

    If its doing its workload, then checking the cpu usage afterwords, its going to be very low. Unless it has a seperate thread to check cpu usage while the program is actually sending the emails, its going to return almost no cpu usage if anything at that time.

    Imagine the source code like this:
    do {
    build_email (); //cpu time high here
    send_email (); //and here as well
    increment_email(); //maybe not here, but whatever
    check_cpu_usage (); //probably very low when it checks here
    } while (currentemail <= total)

    I really doubt they would write the code to use a seperate thread. Also, if its rounding the number to an integer, you can expect it to return 0 often.

    Also, the program may simply just LIE about how much work its done. Unless someone writes and runs a program to keep track of this service's cpu time, its not likely anyone would know otherwise.

    I wonder if it fits in a pringles can?

    If so, maybe we covertly listen to internet radio in the office while seemingly only eating potato chips, and improve our signal at the same time.

    Im still trying to decide what to tell my boss when he asks for a chip. Not to mention how I would explain headphones coming out of the can. Maybe I should rethink this.

    Run *nix on the server(s) then use vmware or wine or whatever your preferance is to emulate windows. (Heck, even a screenshot might do). Let *nix run stable in the background, and whenever someone comes around or you go home for the night, just open up the emu. You might even get a reputation for running the most stable and efficient windows server ever, hehehe.

    If your going to need to work on workstations, then you will need to get more creative. Hire one of those 11 year old windows addicts (you probably have a few somewhere in your family or at least in your neighbourhood.) Tell your boss its take your kid to work year, and let him handle the workstations.

    My idea may not be very realistic, but it should would be fun.

  10. Graphic Quality isnt the Only ? That Comes To Mind on Specs for Sony PSP Handheld · · Score: 1

    I don't doubt the claim of PS2 quality graphics, although I cant see it being a reality without a hefty price tag to match. Other things that I wonder about are..

    -Theres no mention of any video out ports. 7.1 surround while looking at a little 4 inch screen just doesnt seem to have that "surround" effect. A multi out like the PS* would be nice, so component or svideo out could be a reality.

    -After my last comment, I think... Does PS2 graphics mean it looks that sharp when scaled down to the little LCD screen, and if its output to a TV is it going to be Super Game Boy all over again?

    -And what im really interested in, is how they are going to get around disk skipping. Buffering linear data such as audio or video from a music CD or DVD isnt too hard (hence anti-skip portable cd players), however many games tend to seek to many various locations on a cd/dvd, which would make buffering a challange. As long as their choice of media is read optically, they face problems such as this......Then again, jogging while playing any game offers more risks then simply disk skipping.

    I for one look forward to seeing console quality games seeing portablity, and I beleive sony is the best choice for this move. Until now (well, until sony gets this baby released), portable games have always had worse graphics, less gameplay time, and in the case of RPG's (my fav time of game), worse story.

    I would much rather see the system remain backwords compatable as the PS2 did for PS1 games. If the system isnt backwords compatable, im sure mod chips and copying solutions will become available soon after its release. (Who wants to pay another $50+ for a game U already own 1+ copies of?).

    Oh, and this is my first post here on slashdot. Yay. I brought a bucket of water with me in case anyone is in the mood for flaming.
