In fact "sanity" and logical thinking seem to have taken a severe blow to the stomach over the last few years as far as I can see. The media, with some exceptions plumb the depths of abuse in their reporting of the events of the world. (If you are American read: America). Gross genralizations and misuse of truth abound in order to manipulate our emotions in order to keep us afraid. We are sold a lie and then our goverments step in magiacally with the solution...even if they caused the problem already. There seems so few people willing to stand up and say, "Hey, wait on a minute...". Except perhaps on/.:>)
A few observations;
1.We have been applying all relevant patches to NT/2000 servers and desktops quickly after release and for about a year or so now, nothing has gone wrong after. Yeh it's a pain, always require reboots. Big deal. You know how many machines out of 8 servers and 125 desktops have had virus problems?
Three.
One major education institution here (of which IT composes a large part) had their entire network comprimised. The professor (head of the IT Department) was on the radio waffling on about how bad it was but failed to answer why they had not applied patches until six weeks after the MS announcment. Of course, they applied the patches after the outbreak in the Uni. when the panic hit.
WTF are they teaching there?
2.The current announcment from MS was on the 10th of Sept. The BBC article appeared 8 days later (wow, they're on the ball!) and has FUD written all over it. You can just hear the Editor; "Quick! Microsoft announced a vulnerability over a week ago". "Get someone to write something". "People soak up this shit!"
3. I am not a huge fan of MS but, while their security doesn't seem to have improved their notifications/patches have improved, immensely. So good on em!
My point was this; If a user in an organisation saves as an RTF then I will get a phone call from the "sendee" asking me what to do with a.rtf file. Stupid I know but true.
Why not just offer the Save As option to.doc as per OpenOffice? (and don't get me started on that program!)

Wooohooo! About time someone spoke out against the dumbing down and mollycoddling that kids get nowadays. Well done.
what happens here. 150 desktops. 1 Linux co residing with Win2000. People can barely cope with 98/2000/xp let alone anything with more options.
