The amazing thing to me is that even when you stick to one vendor's implementation, let's take Sun's for an example, there are still tons of compatability issues with different versions. One application requires 1.3.1_09 or something, another requires 1.4.2_whatever, and the 1.3 app won't work with the 1.4 app. So Sun has control over the reference, and over the implementation, and they STILL don't have a solid track record.

Give me a break. I travel a lot. And while I have a wife who always knows where I'm going and would certainly notice if my plane crashed, she might not know right away. She doesn't sit in front of the TV all day, and it could be a day or two before she even knew of the plane crash. I'd want her to get notified as soon as possible. And think of all those unmarried people who travel and don't have constant contact with their parents or friends. I can think of several people at my work that are in that situation. Their parents may go weeks before finding out.

We install Vocera VoIP badges in hospitals, and have had nothing but success. Granted it's not "standard" VoIP, as it uses it's own proprietary protocol, but it does have the geek appeal of having badges that look like Star Trek communicators. It also has group functionality, so that a nurse can call for the closest doctor available. Now, this wouldn't be for the general public, to have a Vocera badge that they can take anywhere and have it work, but it does well in business environments where you can have a badge instead of a phone sitting on your desk.

You are not describing what a "network administrator" logically means. Yes, it is the typical usage of the term, but it is not accurate. A network administrator is responsible for administering the network, not the systems that run on top of it. What would a CCIE with 250 routers, 5000 switches, firewalls, IDS, and remote access servers have to do with "fixing shitty HP machines" or "a gaggle of retarded secretaries?" What you are describing is more of a systems administrator role, not network.

And yes, the network administrator should be fired or severely disciplined for allowing a 3rd-party connection to infect the network. However, there is no question that the systems administrator who is responsible for that Windows system should be fired.

    5% Crying
    10% Crayon ability
    0% Getting daddy a beer
    10% Getting daddy a Coke

    30% Questions beginning with 'Why'

Honestly, if the original recipe percentages were accurate, then that says a lot with regards to the current state of parenting.

This is nonsense. As the author of a work, you have the ability to license that work in any of a number of different contracts. I believe there are actually companies out there that license toolkits both under the GPL, and under more traditional commercial licenses. If you want to use the toolkit in a commercial application and not release your code, you'd have to pay the commercial license fee. If you just wanted to make GPL programs, then you are free to use the GPL license. Just because something is licensed under the GPL does NOT mean it has no value.
