I'm glad you asked that question.
I went to the same school as one of the winners (the one from Oregon), and I went through the same science program. It's a good one, focused on research. Some of the kids do get lots of help from their parents-they're usually easy to spot. What's even funnier is that many of the parents work for Intel, to begin with. (Intel has a semi-major campus in Hillsboro, just outside of Portland).
Not all the projects are done by parents, though.
There were many kids that did surprisingly good work for high school;)
I wonder how much do NASA and DARPA collaborate.
Much of the technology used to create the mars rovers seems like they would be useful for this challenge.
From the article: "The biggest hurdle has been making vehicles see obstacles and react to them"
The mars rovers use a pair of cameras to build a 3d model when it decides its path. Put this system into a 4x4, give it a small cluster for computation, and it should work well enough to make it across the desert, I would think.
If you're looking at buying an alienware notebook, first look at this
site.
Alienware rebrands the Sager line of laptops, by adding cool logos and color schemes. If you don't care for these extras, the same notebooks can be had for much cheaper.
Go ahead and mod me a troll, I've got karma to burn;)
However, I think this is a point people often overlook:
Assuming VoIP takes over the current Telco system... Who is going to pay for the infrastructure? This all takes money to keep in order.
If phone companies aren't around, you will be making up the payments to your internet connection provider.
It's great to see all this new big monitor tech from CES, etc...
However, all these large screens get increasingly cumbersome as their resolution grows, because graphics get so small. Right now I'm using a 1920x1200 UWXGA screen on my laptop and the only way to read webpages is to increase the font size, which screws all the formatting.
I'm hoping for a good vector-scale-type format for text/graphics. (that's still small enough to be suitable for the web).
This is how the feds finally caught kevin mitnick.
He was hacking into the phone system using a cellular modem. They triangulated his frequency and caught him in his van.
But what are these great features of Web 2.0 technology ?
or here

I'll be the first to invest in frigidaire's freezer division.
