I started to write a reasined response to Mr Paul Murphy's piece, and got sidetracked somewhere as i was reading it...
When i started programming in the mid-60's, I did it because i truly enjoyed it. I got a real kick out of getting computers to do ever more complicated things (think NASA types of things). As time went on I found the whole process to be fun, and i kept up with the current paradigms and languages as much as i could. Sometimes i jumped on the right bandwagon (C, OOP, C++, Java, UP and UML) and sometimes not (I became a real Turbo Pascal expert;-) Now, it's linux for me. I am enjoying the Linux experience more than i can say. One thing to notice however, is that i have not mentioned anything to do with the law or lawyers or lawsuits etc.
Now, Mr. Murphy, I am not sure if i am worthy of the title "useful idiot", but here is the position i take. I could care less about your stupid f'ing lawsuit, nor am i interested in some suits opinion of me or my coding mates. I have written more code than you have written english, and i will continues to write any code i want in any way i want for the rest of my life, lawsuits not withstanding. I am sick to death of having half of any technical conversation being taken up with the legalities of the thing. Lets get back to what we love doing, and maybe if we ingore these fools they will go play with each other.
Thomas J. Bigford (in case someone wants to sue me!)
Yes... and that is why the Red Sox are the better baseball players over the Yankees. They play for a team that doesn't win! Brilliant!
IMHO the hacker is in the person, not the language.
My daughter, who is now a sophmore in college, was raised with the internet from about age 10. Rather than rules, we worked from a perspective of allowing her to explore freely, while striving to be trustworthy parents. It seems to have worked;-) She is well adjusted, studious, athletic, compassionate and hard working. What more could any parent want? I believe that the porn thing is mostly in the heads of people who were raised with porn being a titillating but un-atainable prize. I think kids now see it for the sleaze it is.

First - the premise is that it is the fault of the SUV that idiots buy them who have *never* driven further off of the pavement than the sholder of the road.
Secondly - as one who has programmed professionaly in Asm, Fortram, Basic (not VB), Pascal, C, C++ *and* Java, IMO Java fills a nitch and does so quite well. That is an OO language that is not tied to the past/hardware/os.
I am sure that all of the other various languages mentioned in this thread are *very* cool. But come on folks - they are tools. Get a little perspective!
Anyway - Java *is* Cool!
Ahhh, My 4 favorite companies intel/Intel and sony/Sony...doing my favorite thing - trying to limit my computer for their benefit. Both (all 4?) of these companies have thousands of people working hard to make customers happy and thousands more trying to stifle the customers wishes. Sounds schitzy to me... and the best part is that in our upside down economic view - these are extremely successful companies!
Do you have a name for your product? How about a marketing strategy? Superbowl ad?
Gee - If I look away from a TV ad - should I pray for forgiveness ..
Get Real!
The sleaze never stops ...
Whose lobbyist do you suppose shepherded that law through congress?
Contracted for Sun for a while - and found they are just another bi-polar corporation, like MS or Sony. Wouldn't hang my dreams on them.
It may be that using your brain to actually question what you are told causes the enhancement of the liberal gene ...
What do you get when you cross a software developer and a lawyer? There is no punchline - it was rhetorical...

I wonder what they get for CEOs over there?
