The idea of compiling to byte-code and executing via byte-code interpreter is not new! Correct me if I'm wrong, but CLISP (among other very old implementations) is an excellent example of this concept in practice. And (again, correct me if I'm wrong) Viaweb (Now Yahoo Online Stores) was launched using CLISP in 1995 (not that it matters but to show that CLISP was alive and kicking at least two years before the 1997 patent)
This doesn't just break Java if allowed to continue.. It breaks Java, CLR, Python, ProvideX, many LISP interpreters, etc...
