The first computer I owned was a Timex-Sinclair Z100. No monitor (it attached to an old portable BW portable TV I wasn't using. I typed in programs from the magazines all night long so my kids could fight over who would try them out the next morning. Programs were stored on audio cassetes on a portable cassette player. God forbid I typed one number wrong and had to go over the whole thing to debug. Wasn't it great though?
I'm not exactly one of the "masses" but for $399 and not much effort, I've got a 120GB server. My time is valuable to me and although I'd like to, I'm not going to throw a box together and install some distro or another. Like I said I'll buy that.
Beg to differ. Battery costs don't enter into the picture for a good long while, Toyota is underwriting the cost of the car so that they are making zippo profit on it (it's a halo project) and my Prius gets ~50MPG. I mostly use it as a station car and use $20 worth of gas every 6 weeks.
I read books EXCLUSIVELY on my Axim 5 PPC. Why? I don't like caryimg around 5 lbs. of book, I have nowhere to store paper books any more. I'm 56, a geek, and I'm proud of it. I've been reading books on my pda since I got my first Handspring. I will never switch back to paper again. All my books are stored on my HD and take little space. When wanted I transfer them to a CF or SD card and read using MS Reader, Acrobat 1.0, or Mobipocket. Best sellers are becoming available in ebook form from a number of sources
Micro$oft is even giving away 3 books a week this summer as a promotion.
I have been a car guy longer than I've been a geek. Automobile magazine had an article last year about how you couldn't tell one mid-size car from the next because it looked like they were all cut with the same cookie cutter. I WANT ONE!!
I read a LOT of books on my pocket pc.

The hell with Hatch! I'll go and leave that booby to moulder on the mother planet. BTW where's my phaser?
RealMedia? How about some good old mpeg. Does this mean I can watch all the Red Dwarf episodes on my Zaurus?
