Not only that lets think of it this way When is the last time you heard about an innocent victem being wounded or killed during a violent bank robbery or break in? When is the last time you heard about an innocent victem being wounded or killed during a torrent of mp3s? Try putting a price tag on that.
Counting the time the big disk array knocked over the 5 banks of DVD replicators onto my foot?
Like I'm really missing something by not bothering to hit Myspace...
So please tell me about all the garbage pages I don't see cause I don't use Myspace. I can live without bad video, bad music, and teeniebopper angst...
I can't see many, if any, companies running SNORT or similar "intrusion detection" software on every single workstation throughout their company...
Shouldn't have to do more than run SNORT and some packet analysis software on the gateway machine. We're assuming of course that all the workstations are properly NATed behind a gateway. Once you find out which machine's taken over, you can do what you need to do on it. No big deal.
OK, so what exactly would this site be sending at 30k/sec? And exactly how do you sucker a target to send this data out when there's no P2P client installed on it? I'm having a seriously hard time believing this.
Thank you - I'm tired of all the RedHat hating because RPM sucks by itself. YUM has been a great tool for RPM based systems for about, oh, I'd say 4 years now if I remember correctly. I've been using Fedora and CentOS without issue for about 3 years as a result. I'm very happy. I've also tried Ubuntu, but I just don't know where all the config settings are yet like I do in a RedHat based system, but I don't think Ubuntu sucks at all - in fact, I love all this linux competition - it makes the distros step their game up and get better.
I can deal with RPMs, having done RedHat since 3.0.3. But what really impressed the bejezuz outta me was apt-get. I liked the RPM'ed version of apt that was supported for like a minute. Yum? Meh. I like apt better.
However, they did also have mandatory examinations of public officials upon leaving office, a process called euthynia. Accounts were inspected by randomly selected committees; any citizen could bring an accusation against the official in a public court; embezzlement or corruption would lead to a fine ten times the amount received; incompetence was let off with a fine merely equal to the amount involved.
I rather like the idea.
Back then, they also did a cute lil practice called crucifixion. I wouldn't mind bringing it back to use on politicians that get outta line...
That's all well and dandy for those pirates who actually make money off of piracy- but that's a small percentage of the pirates out there. The grand majority are either making use of what used to be considered fair use: Mix CDs and tapes for friends, backups of media purchased legally, copies for educational use, etc. If you're going to crack down on piracy and hit them in the wallets so to speak, what do you do when the wallet is empty and has never had any cash in it?
Significant percentages of their paychecks signed over to the *IAA every month, of course, via garnishments. Likely collected by the government on behalf of the plaintiffs to avoid it getting cancelled out by bankruptcy. A Chapter 7 will wipe out a lotta stuff, but not things like child support, student loans turned over for government collection, and Infernal Revenue garnishments for repayment of taxes. And no, IANAL, but I've had personal experience in this area.
Is it too late for me to start my own record/movie company and get in on this payday????
That is true only if the Gestapo thinks it has further use for you.
If not, they will not hesitate to leave you hanging in the wind.
Libby will do a year or two at a country club, scam a parole, get pardoned by a future administration, and get a talk show just like Ollie North. The Powers That Be reward their minions who take one for the Team. It's just that the rewards come down the line, when all the uproar stops.
What the government should do instead is require itself to indemnify phone companies for any judgments entered against them as a result of complying with the government's illegal requests.
You refering to a government bailout of the phone companies if they get sued?????????
Why should my tax dollars be dumped into a company to better their bottom line just because somebody lawfully sued them and won? They don't wanna get sued by the citizens they provide a service for, they should tell the government to go piss up a rope with their illegal requests and take it public.
As opposed to French files? Howbout if we STILL wanna call 'em French files? Will we be un-'Murrican then? Will we get put on a special watchlist? Sent to Gitmo? Or worse, Cleveland???
Congresscritter: No, the CIA may not use this scheme.
Spook: What about the FBL?
Congresscritter: Nope
Spook: NSA?
Congresscritter: Negatron.
Spook: What about Homeland Security?
Congresscritter: Oh, why didn't you say so in the first place? Approved!
The constitution is not a code of law. It details the structure of the government and the extent and nature of the government's powers.
It does this by defining the legal limits of the government. That's law. Specifically, 'Constitutional Law', that pesky thing the govermnent's been trying for decades to ignore...
Do you really believe any 'evidence' found by these 'out of bounds' operations will be tossed out?
The only useage of the Patriot Act to my direct knowledge is still going on in Las Vegas as a corruption probe to bury various City Councilmen. Seems to me to be the perfect political weapon regardless of your political affiliation...
I can't find any info on it (probably to shield the 'victim), but was the 15 yr old girl white? If she was, it would go a LOOOOOOOOOONG way in explaining this...
Starting to look that way.
Know any good sites I can bittorrent a life from?
But do they run Linux????
But foolishly, expecting serious conversations on /. is about as likely as hitting the Lottery. Possible, but not bloody likely.
That's a lotta MP3s. Wonder how big their disk array is...
Counting the time the big disk array knocked over the 5 banks of DVD replicators onto my foot?
Problem isn't so much that politicians get bought, it's that they don't stay bought.
Meh. it's about half an hour of an episode of Babylon 5 at decent resolution...
Like I'm really missing something by not bothering to hit Myspace...

I've always been a supporter of two-term presidents (and their staffs):
One term in office.
One term in jail.

Oh, in that case, we're perfectly safe.
Do we want it running Linux?
What, there's ANOTHER election coming up????
