Anybody else remember the
Radius Pivot monitors? 15 years ago, Radius had full-page Mac displays that would rotate 90 degrees while keeping everything right-side up... hooked up to a box with a 33Mhz 68030 more likely than not.
You could get NuBus interface cards for them, or even PDS (anyone even remember that format? toaster mac stuff.)
Moving the close control over next to max/min just 'cos it looks prettier.
This is the same place the close control was in Mac OS 9, so this decision may have been affected by a desire to confuse existing Mac users as little as possible.
As regards button positioning, I used Macs almost exclusively for my first 5 or 6 years of computer use, and even today I can revert to top-left position for "close" in a heartbeat because it is hard-wired. So I think this is a legacy of the Classic MacOS. You are probably hard-wired for top-left close buttons.;)
Furthermore, the NeXT interface was designed to put everything commonly used on top-left where possible: menus, scrollbars on left(!), minimize button. With the Apple menu and the menu bar at the top left of the screen, this design decision still holds weight in OS X methinks.
No indicators inside them of what each does until you go near, because they could. Great if you're colour-blind, say, or have poor motor skills.
Very, very true and this has been pointed time and time again (also red and green are a common colorblindness, so the Aqua window buttons are bad for accessibility on multiple counts). However I think the buttons look much cleaner without the symbols, less distracting. This must have been Apple's dilemma as well.
A bigger issue with FireFox is that neither the URL or the Search fields have GO buttons -- thus making them the only fields in your GUI that have no obvious way of activating them.
I'm using Firefox 1.0 and I have a "Go" button just to the right of my URL field. I never use it unless I've just pasted a URL in with the mouse (rare).
It is a standard for search fields to be activated with "enter"; I can't comment on how many people use the "Search" buttons on search sites, but I don't. Just my 2c.
And finally, don't forget the OS X factor. You absolutely can't run that on the x86.
Aha! PearPC is a PowerPC emulator for the x86 which emulates a G3. Absolutely runs Mac OS X 10.3, Mandrake and Darwin, more or less. BSDs crash while booting due to a PCI hack (says the linked page).
Not only that, but the page hosting pictures of these critters has been hacked... sheesh...

By releasing their console years ahead of Sony and Nintendo's next boxes, Microsoft will lose on game selection, unless they plan on writing all the games themselves/and or hiring games companies to write exclusively for the XBOX.
Seems like most really popular games come out for multiple consoles simultaneously... (a certain non-swimming action franchise notwithstanding). Where will the developers be at when XBOX2 comes out?
Good point, but.... the 2005 Corvette C6 redesign includes a 6.0L all-aluminum 400HP/400lb-ft V8. Sounds like they're ditching the "good old" pushrod...
In defense of the old engine, it's been undergoing continuous development and refinement... it makes 2-3 times the power it made when it was introduced in the 60s.
They are considered "pony cars" by the marketing psychos, similar to the Ford Mustang, which they were introduced to compete with. Now they've both been killed anyway.
The Corvette was envisioned from the outset as a "pure" sports car; often with two seats, always expensive, state-of-the-art tech, competes with Porsche/BMW/Viper/Ferrari, etc.
The Camaro never competed with the Italian supercars, although it did go head-to-head with the "VW" Porsches such as the 924 and 944.
Okay, I took 10 minutes earlier today upon seeing this story to go to senate.gov and house.gov, and CONTACT my (for the moment) elected representatives about this.
If everyone who reads Slashdot let their senators and representatives know they support HR 2239, it would have a much better chance of passing.
That is, if such legislature can still get past this administration... let's rally while we can!
This means we'll be able to buy Apple hardware and run Windows software natively, through WINE or similar.
After recovering from the shock, this is starting to seem like a good move for Apple.

Windows XP's Luna is lairy and Teletubbies-like but not actually garish.
Lairy? WTF is "lairy"?! Google told me, though:
Lairy
