  1. Remote exploits, not viruses on ATMs Susceptible to Windows Viruses · · Score: 5, Insightful

Lets be clear here, its not viruses we worry about. Nobody is going to run Kazaa on their local ATM. Its all about possible remote exploits.

No OS is completely bug free and secure for ever. If the network the ATM's connect to is safe, the box should be safe. If they connect to the internet, I'm moving my money to another bank, no matter what OS they run!

I wonder how many American citizens would be better of being "liberated" from Bush? Can we do a survey and get some stats? Maybe we should just intervene and do some "Regime change", especially if Bush wins, as it is then clearly a perverted, rigged election. Maybe a Lee Harvey Oswald will save us. Surur

Are we forgetting about bean divergence (even from lasers). At that distance it should be several tens of meters wide, and they can just sweep the beam around a few times. It would be similar to attracting the attention of a passing plane with a mirror (although obviously with less diverged beam.

Its called recognising the second order effects of one's actions. Sure cannibalising the micro-drives are good for you in the short term, but the Seagate makes a big profit margin selling these at a premium to photographers, and probably sells them to Rio at a steep discount. They dont want to lose that premium to the buyers of the Rio unit. They will therefore either stop selling to Rio (to protect their larger profit from photographers) or change the spec in some way to make that unintended use of the drive impossible.

Either way it will drive up the costs for Rio, and damage them as a company. They will be forced to become less hacker friendly, and everyone will end up hating them.

Its called thinking more than one step ahead, and this exact same scenario has already occurred to other HDD music player makers.

My near 9 year old account was upgraded about a week ago. I went from 85% full (with ruthless pruning) to 1% full. Also the amount of spam I recieve has dropped dramatically recently. I bought Mailwasher pro 6 months ago, but hardly use it anymore, as there isnt anything to delete. When G-mail was anounced, I was ready to jump ship, but very reluctantly, as I had my hotmail address for so long. Now that I've got 250Mb for free, with 10Mb attachments, I no longer feel the urge at all anymore. Competition.... Its great, isnt it. Surur

Not all evolution happened in homo sapiens. I would assume most of our autonomic system developed in the rodents from the Jurassic, and were slowly refined over the next 50 million years. I'm sure for an animal padding through snow or ice it was *very essential* not to lose heat through their feet. What has happened since has been mere fiddling at the edges. Good thing we are now getting ready to take charge of our own evolution (and hack out all the legacy code such as this )
