Jessica Hodgins has since moved to CMU and teaches a whole bunch of computer graphics/animation related courses, one of which I have actually taken and enjoyed thoroughly. Some of her more impressive projects in my opinion are her studies on brittle fracture simulation and secondary motion. For the lazy, here's a direct link to some movie clips.

Microsoft would likely be doing this because of the inability of hackers to easily replace the contents of a DOC with their own personal OS image, be it Linux or NetBSD.
Actually, I'd say it's to prevent people from putting their own 160G hard drives in and downloading game images to it. The XBox (not surprisingly) proved to be one of the easiest consoles to mod. There's even a purely software-based way to do it. Those who know this have approximately 2 legitimate copies of games (Halo and MechAssault), and about 30 illegitimate images sitting on their hard drives. A non-standard storage medium would make this kind of thing all that much harder.

I liked the movies better than the books in general for a couple reasons:
    1. The pacing in the movies was, for the most part, much better than that of the books. For example, instead of slogging through Tolkien's 10 page description of a setting, you were taken on a breathtaking flyby of some majestic landscape.
    2. Tolkien's books weren't really that amazing to me in the first place *ducks tomato*. Don't get me wrong, he was certainly a pioneer in the field of fantasy, but the genre has come a long way since then and I much prefer the more modern works of today's legends. The epic adventure/war/fantasy genre movie, on the other hand, has had a long time to develop and grow, giving Jackson the tools to tell the story in a way that I find much more engaging.

I don't know about you, but after leaving my machine on for a day or two, I don't even notice the noise anymore.

Except that one time when I had to pack up my comp to move the next day... It was so eerily quiet that I had to turn on my desk fan just to get some sleep.
