Apple's Rumored PowerPod
mobilemag writes "MobileMag has released a photo of the new Apple PowerPod. This sounds like an amazing device! With Wi-Fi and video messaging, the powerpod could very well be a hot seller."

You know this is an April Fool's joke 'cause the product name doesn't begin with an "i".
My swiss army knife does that too.
Also includes:

I'm glad to see that Apple finally got on the ball and developed a portable media device with WiFi. The original iPod has sold very poorly because it had no wireless and less space than a Nomad.
However, I'm only buying it if it has Bluetooth and can support Linux. Otherwise, it's lame.

Enjoy the $2k bandwidth bill!
At this point, you might as well call the company orange... these april fools jokes are funny when they are reasonably real... that's what had me going 3 years ago on slashdot... but this is just stupid... Who's with me?

From the link: "Apple today announced the PowerPod, the world's smallest portable video and music player with integrated video and digital camera. The device can hold over 1,000 songs or 100 movies and will be available in the summer of 2004 for $699 from the Apple Store and Apple Authorized Resellers throughout the U.S. The PowerPod is a half-inch thick, encased in an ultra-portable lightweight durable body and is available in 20, 40 and 60GB models. The PowerPod features a hi-resolution 5 x 3.5-inch touch-screen LCD and a 1.2 megapixel integrated digital camera, users can record and view movies while on the go or perform wireless video messaging while connected via a WiFi network. The dual external speakers can be used for audio playback for movies or for private listening with an external headphone jack. It also features an integrated microphone for video conferencing. With a 400Mhz RISC processor the USB 2.0 and FireWire handheld runs on the new Mac OS Portable OS. Basically, a stripped down version with PDA and Video functionality intended primarily for Video recording and playback, instant messaging, web browsing, email and address book." As we can see from apple.com, no such 'PowerPod' exists. I've been waiting for a Newton replacement for years, but it's all a cruel joke today.
Under capitalism man exploits man. Under communism it's the other way around.
Look at the calendar dude.. no, don't look at the hot naked chick on it!
And best of it all - you can have a real PowerPod for just USD 24.99. Yeah, Griffin has already taken the name for their iPod car charger. This is one of the lamest April Fool Days I can remember, they don't even try.
The article starts out: "Apple announced today..."
But no link to Apple's press release... and Apple's site doesn't have anything on it.
Next year, I'm sleeping through 4/1.

Hey, it may have been six months since the last Slashback, but today as we buckle
under the strain of another stream of unfunny April Fools "jokes", let's take a
moment to thank Slashdot's monthly meta publication Trollback
for putting out a fantastic 4/1 issue.
Way to go, guys.

What? That is wierd. People must be reading the article.

This is one AFD joke that I wish was real. I've actually been expecting a "PowerPod" that can play video to come out at some point soon - obviously this isn't it. :(
I've got more mod points and GMail invi
It's bad enough trying to read slash or fark on April 1, but when the jokes are still coming in at the end of the day I'm just giving up.
Theres an awfull lot of products out there with the "Powerpod" name, how would they be able to use it? Or did I get AF'ed again?

Is this going on all night??
I have a proposal. Perhaps the poster could indicate in the decription if the post is not an April fools joke. I'd like to read some actual news today. This could be true. I'd sure like to know though.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. The story is a dupe, the topic is boring, the facts weren't checked. WE GET IT!!
I couldn't get to the original site, but here (google cache) is a picture i found, though I don't know if it's real.
Yes, it's April 1. That doesn't mean that every half-assed 'prank' needs to be on the front page.
I mean, these folks didn't even bother defringing the icons in their Photoshop.
April fooools!!!1111111!! Would look more authentic if pics were not rendered.

Yup, pretty much every slashdot reader who has posted today.
Are you waiting until the bandwagon is well on its way before hopping on?
Fuck, man. Enough with the goddamned complaining.
p.s.
Seriously. April fools gets crappier and crappier every year.
Do one of the following:
1) Make stuff that is just so rediculous its funny
2) Make stuff that is so hard to tell from the truth you actually fool people. That way the fooling of the people is funny.
Slashdot and most other sites on the net seem to keep doing the third option on April Fool's day, and that is to make fools of themselves. Stop wasting our time. Try something more subtle and intelligent. Like what google did.
The GeekNights podcast is going strong. Listen!
SpyMac moderators are horrendous trolls that scour the web looking for anything debunking the site.

The PowerPod is actually an accessory for the iPod that is sold by Griffin Technologies. The so called "PowerPod" mentioned in the article appears to be an April fools hoax. Not to mention, there is no sign of this on Apple's front page
I would RTFA, but as usual the site is slashdotted well before I tried it... Yeah April fools jokes do get old.... At least I wasn't taken in with the article over at http://www.macosxhints.com/ ... You know you're a geek when you realize it's April Fools day because a 3 Microprocessor SMP system is in efficent, and thus you know Apple would be crazy to build it...
This one on the surface sound halfway reasonable, though the big clue is when Apple announces something within minutes it's featured at www.apple.com....
Does it support Ogg Vorbis?
If so, then this is definitely an iPod Killer!
And if not, this is certainly the beginning of the end for Apple.
If you don't know what AltaVista is (was), get off my lawn.
Joke or No Joke someone is going to have to build an integrated high power device. A MP3 player, PDA, cell phone, GPS, pedometer (whatever else you can think) should be in one unit rather than a bunch of little wimpy units. Like an MP3 player - say 150 dollars come on, a PDA is 300 not terrible bad but add a GPS is like adding a wart to a hog. One day maybe these will be integrated and powerful to start really replacing desktops even laptops - then we may start wearing them like pagers...

By this little device...
to whoever posted this one. You obviously got quite a few people with this one, most of the posts are pissed off people...oh wait!
This might be more funny if Mobilemag and its owners didn't have a less-than-stellar history that could be compared to Infinium Labs.
Don't reward Mobilemag with clickthroughs and traffic that they can use to gain advertisers and products. Mobilemag's owner Fabrizio Pilato has a history of being a dishonest scam artist.
The most recent example of Mobilemag dishonesty is posting a story to Slashdot as an anonymous reader that points to (surprise, surprise!) Mobilemag. Of course the post is written as if some third party who has nothing to do with the site submitted it.
Check Mobilemag's Recently Accepted Submissions history for the proof. The Slashdot scam is the least egregious of Mobilemag's sins.
If you need some background on Mobilemag.com, here's the skinny:
Mobilemag is the latest incarnation of TwoMobile (a.k.a. TwoMobile Guys), a pair of high school drop-outs who participated in a de facto fraud with the Canadian dotcom incubator NRG Group. NRG billed itself as a youth marketing research firm that used teenaged "CEOs" as gimmicks to get media attention. (Based on NRG/Mobilemag/TwoMobile activities, the investment waters in Toronto -- Canada's financial capital -- have been poisoned for serious businesses that have an Internet strategy as a key business component. This comes from a lawyer who brokers investment for technology-related companies.) The TwoMobile.com domain is now being redirected to Mobilemag.com.
The two teens used the investment money to buy all sorts of top-dollar toys and electronic equipment such as digital video cameras, pricey suits, etc., burned the cash away with parties, personal trips around the world, vacations and booze. They moved back in with their parents in small-town Ontario when the free ride was over and they ran out of money, and therefore couldn't afford to live in Toronto.
"I created a business where we can play with toys and go on trips!" Mobilemag owner Fabrizio Pilato said that to a Toronto newspaper about an earlier version of the site when he was asked about funding. In other words, he's a scam artist.
"We were sick of reviews that were really more like advertisements" is what the owners of Mobilemag was quoted as saying. His statement would be laughable if it weren't for the fact that Mobilemag is all about advertisements -- the site sells its coverage to manufacturers -- and pandering to the product manufacturers just to get more electronic toys for free.
So don't reward Mobilemag with clickthroughs and traffic that they can use to gain advertisers and products.
That $2000 bandwidth bill will be more than paid for by increasing their ad rates (for the larger audience) and by revenues from clickthroughs on existing ads.
...fucking hilarious!!!!
I can't tell if it's for real (and I don't really care). But if a song is about 2.5 MB or so how the hell does one get a movie in 25 MB? I vote fake or written by an imbecile (or both).
Be happy. Nothing else matters.
I think all moderations today should apply in reverse. It's the April Fool's mod.

I wish it wasn't April Fool's, 'cuz that device looks like it would be AWESOME. (granted they could make it fit in the palm of your hand and make it touchscreen)

At $699 for 400Mhz, it'd actually be cheaper and faster than 80% of all mac's currently in peoples homes.

Apple Cinema Display casing, eMac speakers, iSight camera, and G4 power button knocked together to look like a pretty lame tablet.
SofaMan -- Occasionally Battling Evil With His Mighty Powers Of Indolence.
You'd think they'd atleast pick out a new name. There's already the Griffin Technology PowerPod Auto Adapter for iPod. Obviously, Apple wouldn't use the same name for a future product.
Oh wait...
What if we could build a beowulf cluster of them? Would it still be lame then?

Sorry to upset you humpy left nut, but how is posting a suggested article of interest a scam.. it is up to slashdot to decide what they post, dont be so jealous and condescending.. maybe you were really excited about the PowerPod, sorry to bust your nuts.. April fools
MobileMag was never an incarnation of TwoMobile.. TwoMobile was a crazy idea dreamed up by my ex partner (a far from earth kid) who happend to have landed $250,000 to go on trips and write about gadgets while on the road only because his best friend was a millionaire CEO they accepted the idea..
We will keep doing what we do, so move on with your life and dont hold such a grudge, who needs high school anyway..
PS. your fake quotes are amusing..
"I created a business where we can play with toys and go on trips!" Mobilemag owner Fabrizio Pilato said that to a Toronto newspaper about an earlier version of the site when he was asked about funding. In other words, he's a scam artist."
This IGN article reveals that the Rio Karma's successor, which Rio was showing to select media at CES 2004, has an SD expansions slot, and rumours are that the slot is for an 802.11b card.
Of course, there is nothing stopping you from plugging your Rio Karma, which is available today, into a wireless hub on top of your stereo, or into a notebook with wireless ability.
"I created a business where we can play with toys and go on trips!" Mobilemag owner Fabrizio Pilato said that to a Toronto newspaper about an earlier version of the site when he was asked about funding.
I thought that's the reason just about every CEO does their job. Well, once they are past puberty, they also add "... and go on trips, and sleap with beautiful and expensive women".
1.3 MegaPixel camera? HA!
that April Fool's day jokes are only supposed to be played *IN THE MORNING*!!!
When Microsoft announced their portable media center operating system which is meant for devices EXACTLY like this one, a very high percentage of the comments were along the lines of: "Nobody wants this. We don't need video. You can't watch video while jogging. This will fail miserably."
.
Now apple has announced it, and I hear little aside from praise and jubilation. So what's suddenly changed? Did you all wake up this morning and say "You know what, I do want a portable video player. I was dead wrong 2 weeks ago when I said no one woudl want that."
Or was it simply that all the apple fanatics (come on, you know you're out there) over-reacted because the title of the previous story called it an "ipod killer"?
I want to know what's suddenly changed that we all think this is a great idea when apple announces it, but it was an awful idea when Microsfot announced it. .
P.S. I'm not trolling, check my karma if you don't believe me. If this thing will play Divx without forcing me to re-encode into some DMR'ed format, I'll definately be buying one. . .
A truly sublime April Fools article. It makes so much sense that a reasonable person with no knowledge of DHS (or US Gov't for that matter) would lap up like a hungry dog. Of course, if you know that Tom Ridge is Bill Gates' bottom, the proposterousness of the article is overwhelming.
Sadly, they pulled it at midnight... guess left coasters don't get a full day of April Fools.
The writing was understated, complete with some seemingly supporting links to real news. An excellent job. Much better than "PowerPod". I think I ate one of those once on at a health food store.
Cheers,

...and must not be reading dictionaries. It's "weird" you fucking moron.
kremvax.msk.su and e-mail viruses also used to be the stuff of April 1st and urban legends. Apple will make a fortune if it releases an under-$1K device that looks, weighs and behaves exactly as described in the article. Well, maybe add a TV tuner/recorder. And Apple video store that downloads movies within an hour.
Difficult? Yes. Needs fuel cells, low-power displays/HDs and other scientific/engineering breakthroughs? Yes. Beating Microsoft in profits within a few years? Priceless!

How about the investors whose money they squandered?
How about any of the dozens or hundreds of real startups that couldn't get financed because of deceptive schemes like this one?
How about any unwitting investor who decides to give this fellow their hard-earned money without knowing his history?
There's something called "full disclosure" that's a legally required practice in investment circles. It's unlikely this TwoMobile fellow would have disclosed his shady dealings on his own, so kudos to the original poster who brought this to light.
This fellow's denials in the face of detailed evidence bolsters this argument.
